Wedding-Ceremony Music

May 23rd, 2011 @ 9:08 am by Mrs. High Wire

My FMIL (we’re pretty close, by the way) gave me a CD full of instrumental wedding music.

I may have listened to all of it one night while I was cleaning my apartment.

Whenever Mr. High Wire isn’t around (which is almost never), I love to indulge in SSB (secret single behavior). Now, I don’t stand in my kitchen eating crackers with jam on them, a la Carrie Bradshaw, but I do revel in the opportunity to listen to cheesy pop music and watch the most terrible of terrible wedding reality shows (Four Weddings, anyone?).

All of my SSB that evening revolved around the wedding, so there’s not much single-ness about it, but it was definitely something that Mr. High Wire would have NO interest participating in on a weeknight. Deep cleaning? No. Instrumental wedding music? No thanks. AND reality TV? He’d rather pour dirty laundry over his head.

But it got me thinking about our wedding music. We recently booked our wedding DJ with Complete Music, which is a preferred vendor for the venue. This means that they have worked there before and already have all of the required paperwork on file. Yes and yes. PLUS they were about $200 cheaper than any other DJs I had found, and were more experienced. Yes, please!

Other options for wedding music are the coveted, but more expensive, live band or the budget-friendly iPod playlist. We chose the middle ground so we could have someone act as the master of ceremonies for the evening and keep the party extra lively.

Traditional ceremony music would work well for our ceremony, but I wouldn’t mind incorporating some more contemporary instrumental songs throughout as well.

What kind of music do you want for your wedding ceremony? Does anyone have any suggestions for instrumental versions of contemporary songs they love?

Check out the ‘Vitamin String Quartet’ on iTunes- they have tons of contemporary songs done on strings- and they sound great! We have bought 10 or so tracks to play whilst people are arriving for our ceremony, and a few for signing the register. I think there’s also a ‘Vitamin Piano’ album or two on there.

I looove testing out ceremony music! Sometimes I get a little teary eyed at work because I can just picture walking down the aisle to it. That’s how you know it’s a good one! ;)

@hesmywatermelon: I second this too. I am getting some songs for my string quartet and I love ‘Viva la vida’ by Coldplay. It will be one of those played by the quartet too.

Vitamin String Quartet is awesome! We are using all their stuff for our pre-ceremony as well as ceremony playlist.

@bRooklynRocks: We are using the VSQ version of Viva La Vida for our recessional!

VSQ is amazing!!! If I weren’t getting married in a Catholic church (wherein our choices are a bit limited to more traditional pieces), I’d totally choose a VSQ tune - perfect blend of modern and classic :)

Since me and my hubby-to-be are professional classical musicians, we are only having live music for everything from the ceremony to the party. I understand that people without our fab connections might not be able to afford a full night of live musicians - but NOTHING can compare. My suggestion is to contact your local college music program, and get music students to play - imagine a string 4tet or a harp and flute duet. 2-4 people for your ceremony, especially if they are in school, would not be that much money. I made a lot of extra money from gigs when I was in school, so you will be able to find some people for sure. I think that having a DJ later would be cool - but the live classical musicians for the ceremony is something that can’t be duplicated with a recording!! (I see you are from Dallas - contact SMU, they have a great music school!!)

Complete Music is great! They’re a nationwide company, and they train people very well. My brother was a DJ for them for a year and loved it. I’m using them as well in St. Louis! :-)

I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the sheet music available online, so if you’re interested in having any live music, that could be worth looking into!
