Headgear

May 24th, 2011 @ 2:49 pm by Mrs. Sparkler

There was a lot of bridal daydreaming going on in the Sparkler household this weekend. Maybe it’s because Sparks was out of town (or maybe I had a little too much red wine) but I was feeling extra sentimental and romantic. So while daydreaming about my bridal ensemble, I gave a lot of thought to the most romantic aspect of my get-up: The veil.

The veil has been a topic of much debate (inside my mind). At first I didn’t want one, then I REALLY wanted one, then I wanted a birdcage, then a cathedral length… there was a lot of indecision. But I think I’ve finally decided on what I want, and there are three requirements that the veil must meet:

1. Simple

No appliqué, no lace, no bling… nada. I want a plain, raw edge veil with no detail. Sounds boring but… eh. I want.

2. Two-tiered

I love the look of a two-tiered veil, and I’ve always imagined walking down the aisle with my face covered by a blusher. I’m planning to lift the top layer off my face before the ceremony begins, so I’m not staring at Sparks through mesh fabric the whole time. :)

3. Chapel length or longer

Since my dress, jewelry, and shoes are super modern, I wanted to incorporate a traditional look with the veil. Plus, there’s just something so romantic about being wrapped up in long, drape-y fabric.

Here are a few that are currently living up to these standards:

…oh, and that’s it. I need some help, Hive! Any suggestions on where to find a really plain, yet elegant, veil?

What kind of headgear will you be sporting on your big day?

You pretty much described my veil hunt to a T. I bought mine on bee’s classifieds. :) It’s a one tier chapel length.

One word - Ebay. They have everything, plus it’s super cheap and if you hate it, not too much of a loss. Found my ideal veil for $20 on there… I also think salons try to rip you on veils - the one I liked at the salon was $300… yeah.

Irecommend veilartistry-not sponsering or anything, I’ve been building a veil there and they work with you to get exactly what you want for a very reasonable price.

I really want exactly what Catherine Middleton wore - sans the crown.

I’m the same! I wanted a plain chapel length train. After deciding there was no way I was spending $200+, I turned to my bff Etsy. Mine should be here in a few weeks and I can’t wait! Less than half the price!

Mine looks just like that (it’s a cathedral length) I got it for $30 at a local thrift store.

I found mine at a small bridal shop- they actually do second hand gowns. But mine is exactly like the picture with a raw edge and the second tier goes to my finger tips and it only cost around a hundred dollars.

@Miss High Wire: Ditto! I’m still trying to get my DIY version just right.

But DIY all the way! So affordable-I’ve made 3 chapel length veil mockups in tulle for $15. Super cheap and looks the same-there are so many great tutorials out there.

I wanted the same exact thing. I bought mine from Etsy Seller Veiledbeauty. She doesn’t do a lot of gathering on the veil so it’s not ‘poofy’ up top.

Ugh, I haven’t thought about my veil at all or if I want one for that matter. Yours sounds lovely!

I got mine off of ebay for $20 and it was about 9 feet long. I actually had to pay about $15 to get it shortened.

i’m thinking shorter around mid bicep length, no trim, no lace, double layer. When I told the woman at the store that that was what I was thinking, she thought I was crazy but once I put it on with the dress she loved it!

Occansey Designs is really nice because they let you completely customize your veil and you can order online. I would recommend a matching pencil edge rather than just a raw edge though. It will look more finished.

You described exactly my veil. My mom and aunt made it and it was super easy. There have been some bees who did tutorials on here but I can’t remember who. If you don’t want beadwork or fancy edges, it really is super easy and cheap to make yourself. I highly recommend finding a tutorial and taking a day to do it alone or with a helper.
