Mrs. Jellyfish's Picture
Mrs. Jellyfish, Pleasanton, CA Age and Occupation: 27, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Air Force Pilot Engagement Date: February 21, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery About Me: In a nutshell, I’m the most optimistic worrywart you’ll ever meet. My family emigrated from Romania to San Jose, CA when I was 8, and I've been a Nor Cal girl ever since! My fiancé is also a Bay Area native, so it’s funny that we met at UCLA, as college freshmen living on the same floor (go Bruins!). Between his career as an Air Force pilot and my path to becoming a lawyer, our relationship has been anything but typical. We currently live together in Berkeley with our puppy Stinson. In addition to spending time with the loves of my life, I enjoy crafting, attempting complicated recipes, environmental law and non-law school reading (Us Weekly, anyone?). Follow along as I plan an elegant 200-person winery wedding, graduate law school, take the Bar exam, get married and get used to the always unpredictable but never boring life of a military spouse!
About Mrs. Jellyfish

Even though we had taken dance lessons and practiced a lot for our first dance, the dances our guests were really talking about were the ones we shared with our parents. First up, Papa Jelly and I did the father-daughter dance to Joe Cocker’s “You Are So Beautiful.”

Now, if I learned anything from my wedding, it’s that when your dad has a specific song request in mind for the father-daughter dance, you should just let him have his song. When my dad told me that “You Are So Beautiful” was his song choice, I cringed. It’s a beautiful song (no pun intended), but I felt weird about it. Almost like it would be embarrassing or something, the same way you’re embarrassed when your mom kisses you in front of all your friends when you’re in seventh grade. I tried to convince my dad that we should go for another song, but he wouldn’t budge on this one. And now, with the benefit of hindsight, I have to say: he was right.

Twenty seconds into the song, Papa Jelly’s choice finally made sense to me. What dad wouldn’t find truth in these lyrics on his daughter’s wedding day: “You are so beautiful to me / Can’t you see / You’re everything I hoped for / You’re everything I need.” (Ok, maybe not the last stanza. But the rest of the lyrics are perfect.)

As we swayed on the dance floor, another realization struck me: my dad was vulnerable. This man, who I’d never seen lose his composure in all the years I’ve known him, felt as fragile as a 13-year-old boy at a middle school dance. All at once, I could feel what he was feeling – the emotions associated with knowing that your little girl is all grown up. Those feelings I’d discounted in the past as macho and paternalistic were all too real and the thought out it all overcame me. I lost it.

Following our emotional father-daughter dance, Mr. Jelly and his mom made their way to the dance floor. They danced to Celine Dion’s “Because You Loved Me,” and their dance was just as emotional! What can I say – we’re really close to our parents.

Next up, we get the dance party started – Romanian style!

This post couldn’t have come at a better time. I’m struggling with our father-daughter dance song. The emotion of these fleeting moments is captured beautifully in these photos and your words!

omg…im sitting at my desk at work tearing up. I not only know ill be a mess during my father\daughter dance for many reasons but I also have a son and so to flash forward and imagine, god willing, what it will feel like to dance with my little boy when he is all grown up on his wedding day is overwhelming.

So sweet! I have no idea how all the father/daughter “stuff” is going to go on the wedding day. I’m kind of nervous about it My dad and I haven’t talked about it and probably intentionally won’t beforehand since it is so emotional.

I have tears in my eyes after reading this post. The father/daughter dance is something I’m really looking forward to. Just not sure how I’m going to keep my composure!
