The Polterabig Starts

May 24th, 2011 @ 12:02 pm by Mrs. Funnel Cake

Hello, hive! I have officially survived my first Swiss Polterabig. And you know what? It was almost like an American bachelorette party! (Except that everyone was speaking Züridütsch…)

My understanding throughout the evening probably looked something like this:

Toward the end I stopped paying attention…

I admit, I was really nervous heading to meet the girls because I didn’t know who all would be there or what we were doing, and I was anxious about my language skills. I didn’t really have to worry, though. I did a great job speaking (go me!) and hearing, except when I was tired and my ears got lazy. Whenever that happens, everything can sort of become white noise.

Many of Mr. Funnel Cake’s friends made an effort to come talk to me throughout the evening, which I thought was really sweet! I really felt included in his group of friends, and with my level of German I even felt like a functioning member of society. Hoorah!

The sister of the bride and another friend coordinated a GPS scavenger hunt for the bride. They gave Sandra (the bride) a basket full of the small gifts we had brought her.

And then Sandra gave the honours of opening the (first) bottle of champagne, and we shared snacks and toasted to start the evening properly.

Next, Sandra needed to find her first clue…

Love that the dog tagged along!

The coordinators had a fright when the gates to the Landesmuseum were closing for the evening. But Sandra asked nicely and the guard let her in to find her clue.

Running back before the gates closed again

With her coordinates in hand, she put the first location into the GPS and we started out on our journey…

Have you attended any bachelorette parties where you weren’t that familiar with the guests?
