About Mrs. Cinnamon Bun

The “Filter”

May 25th, 2011 @ 10:40 am by Mrs. Cinnamon Bun

I have one tip for everyone who is planning a wedding when their parents/bridal party/best friends are not in the same city. Use photos! In this email age, there is no excuse not to email pictures to your loved ones who are helping you plan (in my case, my parents). I’m not too great with words when I’m just talking (but they run like a river when I’m typing!) so a lot of our misunderstandings stemmed from that, I’m sure. That and the filter effect of trying to describe to a person the picture inside your head. The words you might use to describe something may not be the ones that evoke the right image for your listener. If I’d sent an email with a few photos to explain my ideas before I phoned Cinnamum to talk about X idea, I’m sure some things would have been smoother. Think about how good your ‘audience’ is at visualizing. There is no shame in being on the phone and sitting at your computer collecting photos into an email. Then you can say “I’ve just sent you an example of what we’re talking about!” and if they’ve got a computer handy, you’re immediately on the same page.

Here’s an example of some of the mix-ups we’ve had:

Example 1: I said: “Well, there’s these things I’ve seen called aisle runners, and it’s like fabric with a monogram or names or the date painted on to it and put down in the aisle. I’d be a little worried about it wrinkling up, so maybe we could use double-sided tape to keep it straight?”

I meant:

Cinnamum saw:

Example 2: I said: “I was thinking we could have lemonade and water there before the ceremony, if people are thirsty. We could get some drink dispensers, you know, the things with the taps at the bottom…what do you call those?”

I meant:

Now these two incidents were quite far apart, time-wise. The aisle-runner thing happened soon after getting engaged, and we had the drink dispenser conversation a few weeks ago. In the second case, I realised what had happened before mum had time to say anything, and quickly continued with “You know, the nice glass ones with metal spouts. I bet I could find some at Pottery Barn!” I’d learned to listen to myself to see if I was giving all the right information, but I still hadn’t learned to take my own advice to send an email with a photo.

Mum has been a big proponent of bunting all through this wedding, and she was telling one of her friends about it, and she had to pull out a photo!

Cinnamum meant:

Have you had any misunderstandings when trying to explain your ideas?

Oh the fun misunderstandings. We’ve had those before and after the wedding. Usually we end up in laughter.

Hilarious. Now that I think about it, I’m sure I’ve had some misunderstandings. Definitely related to bridesmaids dresses and shoes.

This happens with Mr. Pony and I all the time. If he read wedding blogs all the time we wouldn’t have these issues. Luckily, we’re usually in the same room so I can just show him what I’m thinking of on my computer.

My mom is very visual and not very creative (bad combination lol) so I have to make sure I have some type of picture for every idea I have. I wanted two types of tables at our reception one round and one square and she could just not picture how that would look (aka she thinks it would be weird)…if anyone has a link for a picture of that I would appreciate it!

Haha, this post was hilarious. I want to see more misunderstandings!

I’ve sent a lot of pictures myself. I actually lead with the picture most of the time because otherwise, it makes no sense.

I am not good at seeing something in my head so I have to have pictures when emailing…unfortunately my FMIL is a very literal person so I always have to say clearly that I don’t want this exactly just something like it. I can’t get upset with her though. She’s just so excited and willing to do anything to help.

Every bride to be should download “snag it”. It’s a computer application that lets you snag pictures off your screen and then easily paste that picture into any document (email or a word document to save for later and compile ideas)

I might be forced to use both rectangular tables and rounds due to #s… So I would also love a picture!

Haha…I’m not sure what my grandmother saw in her mind when I told her I was planning on putting burlap squares in the middle of our reception tables. Her response? “Are you trying to get people to talk about you?”

this is way too funny Miss C, I actually have to really show the pictures to my future mom-in-law what I wanted to have, and she has to shake her head and commented that she never had all these things/details in her wedding and everything seems all fine :)

My FI always misunderstands what I mean so pics are a must! Our IPad has turned into our wedding planner with tons of saved photos. I am also planning LD, away from family and I send my Mom emails all the time. The only problem is, she never checks her email! Even if I text her saying I sent it… So we have some work to do in that’s area

Definitely been there, trying to explain my vision and get a cockeyed look from the other end, haha!

I went to a fabric store with my mom to look for fabric to make some bunting. I had to show my mom a few pictures and then the shop lady came to help and had a totally different thing in mind. Neither of them could ultimately see my vision of mismatched vintage fabrics so I gave up and went to another store by myself another day. Great advice!

FMIL was very confused every time I discussed a brooch bouquet. I finally showed her a picture and she was so relieved! I’m not quite sure what she had pictured in her head! haha

Too funny! My mum vetoed bunting with the “like a gas station?” comment.

The Gatorade cooler. Love it.

This is hilarious (but good advice!)
