Hair Up, Glasses Off

May 26th, 2011 @ 3:22 pm by Mrs. Candy Apple

I have never been one to fuss with my hair. In fact, I’m pretty ambivalent about my hair.

In its natural state, it is stick-straight. Witch-like, but blonde. Well, aside from the glamorous frizzies near my forehead. Typically, I just throw it up into a pony so that it is out of my face at work. Because nothing bothers me more than hair in my face when I’m concentrating. I actually get super annoyed when my hair flops in my face, so I don’t wear it down too frequently. Sometimes I will straighten it, to make it look a bit more sleek, but really, it’s pretty easy-going. I know that some people would kill for my straight hair, but I have always wanted lovely wavy or curly hair, with lots of personality. My hair just seems so, well, straight. Boring. Bland. You know. Grass is always greener, yada yada.

Anyway, since I’m not really a hair person, I’ve been having issues figuring out exactly how I want my hair to look on the wedding day. Candy Apple feeling indecisive?? Shocking.

I do love the look of brides with long, flowy locks, perfectly in place beneath a veil. But, since I don’t wear my hair down that often, it probably wouldn’t be the best option, since it’s not really “me.” And, I do want to feel a bit dressed-up, and for some reason, “dressed-up” to me means hair up. Don’t ask why—I think I’ve watched too many movies with Princesses at fancy-pants balls, or something.

However, due to the somewhat relaxed vibe of our wedding, I don’t really want anything too severe or structured. I want to look elegant, but I also want to look a bit laid-back. Does that make sense? I think I’m too picky…

One issue I’m having is that I don’t really browse celeb sites, or People magazine, or anything like that.

And I have pretty much stopped reading all wedding-related blogs (aside from Weddingbee). Oops. So, I am really not sure at this point where to turn for hair-spiration, or even where to get started. Help?

I have managed to find a few images that I like, though.

I do like this below style, but I don’t think that it would really work for me—it seems a bit, um, big? Not sure how to describe it, but yeah. Not exactly my type of ’do. But close!

I am kind of obsessed with this next one. Totally glam, but not too tight or pulled back. It seems a bit looser than some of the other updos I’ve come across.

And, a side-view of the same hair. I love that this is an elegant up-do, but a bit more loose and fun. Also, the bride reminds me of Blake Lively, so I automatically love her and think she is uber glam and chic.

This below style is pretty similar, but it seems a more structured to me. Still, it’s the low, pulled back ’do that I crave. And I love flowers in hair.

I have a crush on this next hair. It is a bit off to the side, and a loose, fun style. The strips of hair across the bun really add a cool, laid-back feel to the look. It also gives that kind of Heidi-esque, Bohemian-braid vibe that I love so much, but in a bit more elegant fashion.

Simple, elegant—I really like this next one. It seems very classic to me, and yet also a bit modern. It would also go really well with my dress, although I don’t think I would want that tuft of hair coming down.

This next one is totally glamorous and fab. It seems a bit elegant for me, but I really love it. Not too sleek, right? Just the right amount of mussing.

I was trying to find good images of partial-updos that I really liked, but I just couldn’t find any that really called to me. If I were to go that route, I would want a fair amount of my hair up, and lots of curls.

I just can’t decide! Anyone? Help me? What are some other good styles for a stylish yet fun updo? Or half updo? Where do you go to get hair-spiration??

(Oh, and if you don’t know where that title comes from, I’m not sure we can be friends. Maybe. Okay, okay, just kidding, you know I will always love you.)

When you figure it out, please post a photo. My hair is the same as yours and all of my inspiration photos are very similar to yours, but I fear that, like all things inspirational, it just won’t look like that on me.

Um, I love AD. LOVE. I’m not really useful for hair inspiration, like you, I don’t frequent celebrity gossip stuff and the wedding blogs rarely show a good shot of the brides hair. Do they still make hair magazines? I remember looking through those in high school trying to find an updo for prom, ha!

Hello, hair twin! Mine is also…. straight. That’s all. I have had great success asking for a nape-of-the-neck bun over a doughnut (this sounds scary but is not - it’s just a sort of chinese finger-trap looking thing in the shape of, duh, a doughnut which adds a little extra volume to the size of bun for those of us not blessed with fabulously thick hair - i.e., me). But also, so funny, just today I bookmarked the second and third photo as my “hair-spiration” - we’ll have to see if my slippery straights will actually deign to do the gorgeous curly thing though, as often they decline and slither right back into straightness :( GOOD LUCK, and can’t wait to see what you choose!

I think I have your hair in brown… Always wished for curly hair, it has so much more volume and you can do so much more with it, it seems. I think you have a pretty good idea of where to go with the straight hair, though, I love those looks! They seem like variations on the same theme, so your hairdresser (or whoever) should be able to play around and make something that works for your hair, right?

I’m struggling with the same thing. Stick straight blonde hair. I think all of these up do’s are lovely! I would try to watch out for anything that involves too much hair spray though. (More pins, less hair spray.)

Are you wearing a veil or not? (I missed that). Because most of these girls are not wearing them and I think that plays a big role in wear you want your veil placed, if you’re taking it out later, etc.

I love so many of the pics you posted… hard to just choose one! Are you getting your hair done? I think the sleek bun with the loose strands pulled over it would work well with your hair. Trial it?? :)

I LOVE that one with the giant hair flower! It’s so chic. Definitely gets my vote, even though I don’t know what your dress looks like… (nudge nudge)
