About Mrs. Funnel Cake

Now this is a story, all about fonts…cause our invites need a’written a’right about now…OK, I’m obviously not very good at parodying Fresh Prince, but it’s been a long week and I need a little singing here. You could always humour me and sing along, you know?

Fontsssss. What a choice. They mean so. much. to. designers.

Really, I cannot stress how much the font expresses before you’ve even read any of the words on the invite. The font already gives you the look and feel, a taste of what you should expect at the wedding, a hint of what the bride and groom are like…

There’s no way I was going to pick a scripty, curly, unreadable, fluttery font for our invites because that would not represent Mr. Funnel Cake and me. I think I would die of shame if any of my design friends received an invite for our wedding with something Zapfino or Brush Script. How embarrassing!

I just had a flashback of my mother writing the RSVP cards for my sister’s wedding and doing them in Comic Sans. COMIC SANS. Really?? I think I just shuddered a little because I can’t remember if I got her to change the font to something more acceptable or not.

OK, I admit it. I am a font snob. There. I said it!

But as a graphic designer, it’s extremely important for me to be proud of the invitations we send out. I want people to be impressed, or at least not horrified, and Mr. FC and I want to look back on our invitations in 10 or 20 years and still be happy with the way we designed them.

So when it came to choosing a font, I had a lot of choices in front of me. I was pretty sure that I wanted something sans serif, simple, classic, and bold. Our choices:

Helvetica:

What's in a Name? That Which We Call a Font... : wedding columbus stationery Screen054 Screen+054

Helvetica was the absolute first font I thought of because it is innately Swiss and I thought it would be such a wonderful, subtle way to bring Mr. Funnel Cake’s Swiss heritage into the invites, which we are planning to do in a Swiss graphic-design style of sorts.

Akzidenz Grotesk:

What's in a Name? That Which We Call a Font... : wedding columbus stationery Screen055 Screen+055

Some people, such as my Swiss graphic-design mentor Ruedi Rüegg, think that Helvetica is just too boring. If I recall, he used Akzidenz when designing the signage for the Zürich airport. I thought I would try it out and see if it would give me the bold Swiss look I was aiming for.

Verlag:

What's in a Name? That Which We Call a Font... : wedding columbus stationery Screen056 Screen+056

Verlag is a wonderful Hoefler & Frere Jones font used in Germany’s public-transportation system. I love how modern and prominent it looks. I used this font in my senior thesis project, so it was a top choice. Really, I loooove this font.

Didot:

What's in a Name? That Which We Call a Font... : wedding columbus stationery Screen057 Screen+057

I thought I would contemplate Didot, also by Hoefler & Frere Jones, but ultimately I nixed the serif early on so I didn’t even bother doing a trial design with it. It’s a great font, but it just wouldn’t work for our invitation style.

Whitney:

What's in a Name? That Which We Call a Font... : wedding columbus stationery Screen058 Screen+058

This one’s nother Hoefler & Frere Jones font. (Can you tell what my favourite type foundry is??) Whitney is also elegant and stylish. Slight downfall of the H&FJ fonts are that they don’t have special characters.

Knockout:

What's in a Name? That Which We Call a Font... : wedding columbus stationery Screen059 Screen+059

Knockout is a fun H&FJ font that my friend used in her senior thesis…so I thought about playing the invitations up because Knockout has a tooon of different weights.

After I decided which fonts to test, I started some trial runs of how I plan on laying out our text blocks. I reviewed the five test runs (duplicated for caps, Vs, sentence case), and then I showed them to Mr. Funnel Cake for his opinion.

What's in a Name? That Which We Call a Font... : wedding columbus stationery Screen060 Screen+060

Top to bottom: Helvetica, Verlag, Whitney, Akzidenz, Knockout

I didn’t let Mr. FC know which font he was looking at, but naturally the Swiss in him leaned toward Helvetica, which made me extremely happy. So Helvetica it IS!

How did you choose the font for your invites?

I love that Knockout one! Then again you can’t go wrong with Helvetica. ;)

I dig Verlag.

Your rant on Comic Sans is hilarious. I recently had a client send me a poster they’d mocked up in photoshop and they’d used Arial Rounded on it. They insisted that they LOOOOVED the font but I just couldn’t in good conscious use Arial for a headline, so I used Vag Rounded just to make myself feel better. :)

Helvetica is a great choice, especially to incorporate some Swiss-ness into the wedding!

Remember when Comic Sans was Da Bomb!!! It was all modern and whatnot with no little lines sticking out from the top and bottom of each letter. Ahhh… the good ole days with only like 15 font choices.

Love fonts. When I came to my current job, the “graphic designer” (she’s not degreed and has no real training) had pretty much everything that went to clients in Comic Sans. Gross. I’m no graphic designer, but really?!?

This post reminded me….There’s a documentary movie called Helvetica. It’s about the history of the font. Check it out.

I’m no font expert, but I think you made an excellent choice with Helvetica ;) Classic and perfect!

@dddd89: *Ahem* saw the opening of Helvetica at the Wexner Center for Arts in Columbus back in college. Yep. Love me some fonts. ;)

COMIC SANS IS THE WORST FONT EVER! And I agree with @Miss Bunting, Papyrus is equally bad.

Woohoo for Helvetica! I used Whitney in our invitations and Knockout in our STDs — I love HF&J, too. :)

I liek Verlag. Seems to be the easiest to read. But knockout is nice too. Then that makes me think of LL Cool J and “Mama said knock you out.” Glad I could help include another rapper in this post.

I, like many a graphic designer, am carrying on a strong love affair with Helvetica.

As horrible as it is, I didn’t ask Mr. G’s opinion on this one. From the very beginning, my heart knew that we had to have Mrs. Eaves on our invitations. And you know what they say - the heart wants what it wants ;-).

Oh man, I love fonts too… The Helvetica documentary was so fascinating, to see how fonts are developed, and how pervasive that font is! I really like the Verlag and Whitney fonts too, those seem like just a touch different from Helvetica that they are still clean, but a little more unexpected? I dunno. FUN!

I went a simple route by just going with the gorgeous calligraphy that was shown on the sample invite I ordered through Etsy. I am using a motto from my mom while planning my wedding - “Don’t sweat the small stuff.” Font on the invites was something I tried not to get to overwhelmed with. But I love what I am getting so its all working out!

I’m such a font virgin… I consider myself a success for picking a whopping 2 fonts to add to my arsenal. Looks like you’ve got some great options and a nice winner!
