Mrs. Snow Cone's Picture
Mrs. Snow Cone, Pittsburgh/Johnstown, PA Age and Occupation: 23, Public Health Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Engineer Engagement Date: April 9, 2010 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: OMOS Church ceremony/Sunnehanna Country Club reception About Me: I’m one of the lucky ones---I met my future husband at the ripe old age of 13, started dating him as a mature woman of 15, and have been enjoying the ride ever since. Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!

Fearing the Earrings

May 26th, 2011 @ 10:40 am by Mrs. Snow Cone

Truthfully speaking, few things make me happier than crossing off items on a to-do list. I’ll admit, I’m the type of person to put “write to-do list” as the first item on my to-do list so I can cross that sucker off within about 30 seconds. I’m an accomplishment junkie, I guess…the less exciting counterpart of the adrenaline junkie, you could say. So you can imagine my sheer frustration that I cannot for the life of me manage to finalize a very specific item on my wedding list of tasks—my jewelry.

Here’s the deal. I have my necklace all picked out, sitting safely in my closet as we speak. It’s similar to this one:

The only real difference is that my necklace only has the rhinestone/crystal accents along the deepest part of the necklace, as opposed to the whole way around. But you get the idea.

Anyhow, now I’m on a search for earrings. I have two piercings in each ear, and I know that I’m borrowing my mom’s diamond studs for my second holes. That leaves me with a big, blank canvas of an earlobe for my first holes. After trying on multiple, multiple, multiple pairs, I’ve come up with a list of criteria that I’m looking for. Unfortunately, I haven’t found a single pair out there that fits the bill!

I want a pair of earrings that offers a statement without being too big/heavy/overpowering. I’d love for them to be dangles or drops, but with a post component at the top. I want the earrings to incorporate pearls and crystals/rhinestones to mirror my necklace and hair comb. I’m currently swooning over teardrop-shaped stones, so those are definitely catching my eye. Ninety-nine percent of the time, I wear yellow gold (including my e-ring and wedding ring), so that’s my metal priority. I don’t want to break the bank, but at the same time I don’t want them to look cheap. So many wishes, so few jewelry genies to make them all come true.

Here are some of my “close but no cigar” finds (along with price and why they haven’t won my heart).

Image via luxedeluxe on Etsy ($48) - There’s a little too much silver metal; plus I’m not a big fan of those crystal things on top of the pearls.

Image via Just Mel on Etsy ($32.99) - These would be seriously perfect if they had a little less silver. I’ve already contacted the seller to see if gold’s an option, and it’s a no-go.

Image via Just Mel on Etsy ($31.99) - I know I’m being picky, but something about the metal-pearl connection looks a little bit on the weak side. Plus, I’m lukewarm on the round pearls.

All of this whining brings me to a plea—have any brides out there hit the earring jackpot with similar styles? Does anyone have any sites or stores to look into? I’m driving myself insane with my constant Google and Etsy searches of all the different permutations of the words gold, earring, teardrop, pearl, crystal, rhinestone, diamond, drop, stud, and post. I see earrings in my sleep, so any help would be supremely appreciated!

What part of your wedding-day look was the hardest to finalize?

What about trying Amazon? Here is an example of one pair I found there: http://www.amazon.com/Yellow-Diamond-Accent-Dangle-Earrings/dp/B004OR119E/ref=sr_1_2?s=jewelry&ie=UTF8&qid=1306422153&sr=1-2

I had the same earring style! I wanted pearls in everything (you can check my gallery pics and see for yourself). The lace of my dress was embroidered with tiny pearls, my bracelet had crystals and pearls, my tiara had crystals and pearls… and my earrings, you know it, had crystals and pearls. Contrary to you I wanted silver because our wedding bands are made of white gold and I didn’t want my accessories to clash with them.
Also, I didn’t wear a necklace because my dress doesn’t allow it.

With the clear idea of what you want you could go check out some jewelry stores in your city and stop web searching a bit, it can get overwhelming! Have a friend go with you to some stores and have a little fun to shed a little of the stress you’re feeling. You will find your earrings!

Good luck :)

I actually found my perfect earrings without having to look too hard, but now I cannot for the life of me find a coordinating necklace that doesn’t compete with my dress.

Have you tried looking at the jewelry on Overstock’s worldstock fair trade department? They have a surprisingly great assortment: http://www.overstock.com/Worldstock-Fair-Trade/World-Jewelry/22/dept.html

Good luck on your quest!

I’m not sure what your mom’s diamonds look like but I would suggest wearing them and going to a store to try out some in person earrings. I had a diamond necklace and when I tried to put on CZ earrings, you could really see the differnce so I would be a bit hesitant wearing them so close together. Just something to think about before you make an online purchase.

My favorite jewelry designer is Gina at Sonya Renee. I love her pieces.

I bought my earrings from Macy’s. Have you checked the fashion jewelry section of their website?

I got my jewelry at the website below. I didn’t see any teardrop pearl earrings but you might find something that works. What I loved is that you can customize all the jewelry with colors of stones, pearls, and choice of metals. Also, the customer service is great and personal. I made a request for rush service (in time for a shower) and I made a plea that the three pieces I ordered match considering you can’t see them in person. Within a few hours I got a personal reply assuring me all efforts would be made to get me the jewelry in time and that she would ensure all the pieces coordinated.
