Registry Stalking

May 26th, 2011 @ 1:12 pm by Mrs. Bunting

I have a very strong sense of curiosity. So strong that if Mr. Bunting hints at something that sparks my curiosity, I’ll obsess about it for weeks until he himself can no longer remember what it was about (or at least he pretends he doesn’t remember).

Yes, I was totally one of those kids who would try to find any hidden Christmas presents before Christmas. But I also do enjoy surprises, so when I found where they were hidden I just couldn’t bring myself to finish peeking. Apparently it was enough just to know where they were hidden.

The same goes for our wedding registry. Mr. Bunting and I have invested a LOT of time and brainpower into our wedding registry. Just how much, you ask? Let’s just say that when someone told me about their friend who spent three hours in Bed Bath & Beyond, I responded with “Oh, which time?” We have been to that store so many times that the people know us by name, and each time our duration was at least two hours in length. It’s not that we’re greedy, it’s just that we have to start from scratch with everything. The majority of our possessions are what I like to call “college” quality, meaning they’re great for when you’re a college student but could now stand to be replaced. So we needed to register for many, many things, and since we were both fresh out of college, neither of us really knew what we needed or wanted now that we were entering the “real” world. We knew absolutely nothing about what brands to buy, either, hence a lot of time in the store comparing pots and pans. (Mother Bunting is my hero and helped us out immensely.)

Since we took such great care with our selections, I am genuinely excited about the items we registered for. And I’m just dying to know what we’ll be getting off that list! My curiosity is like a little whirlwind in all of its eagerness, but do I really want to ruin the surprise of what people have purchased? No. No I do not.

So I have found a compromise that satisfies both desires without giving away too much. Whenever I feel that curiosity stirring, I open a new internet window, make it reaaaaally short, and log in to my registry. This way I can watch the number of gifts go up without actually seeing what has been purchased. Somehow, I still have the willpower not to scroll down. OK, I may have scrolled down just a teeeensy bit once or twice, but I’ve been pretty good! If you find that you can’t resist, though, then unfortunately this technique won’t work for you.

Is anyone else as curious as I am when it comes to these things? What tricks have you discovered to satisfy your craving, or are you simply unashamed to browse the full registry?

The in-store registering drived me absolutely insane (scanner gun running out of battery, FI losing interest quickly, etc.). I have, however, spent what could possibly be considered an inappropriately long time online messing with our registries…adding/deleting/rearranging/adding differnet things to different stores/etc. It is an obsession.

haha Love it! I can definitely relate….but you are much better than me. I look at what was purchased but not who purchased it. That way it’s still a little bit of a surprise but there’s no way I could just not look! Good job!

I am just as bad. I combined all my registries to myregistry.com and they email me every time a gift has been purchased. That was the default option but I haven’t gone back and changed it. ;)

@Megan: I can’t see who purchased what, but I’m glad! I’d probably be even more tempted to snoop if I had access to that extra bit.
@xtatic1: Do you like using myregistry.com? I combined a few stores and random online items that we wanted on there, but I’ve found it to be a complete waste. No one has purchased anything from it - they all flock to our BB&B one. I also noticed that items displayed on page 1 will show up again on another page, whereas other items don’t show up at all. Just curious if others experienced this, too.
@Miss High Wire: Mr. Bunting had fun with the scanner gun (perhaps too much fun… we don’t really need a roomba or massage chair).

After reading your post, I went on my own registry and found out someone bought us one of the items we really wanted…in terms of we’ll actually be using instead of nice to have items!

It totally stalked our registry before our engagement party. I was so excited to get everything! And there were still surprises. Plus, since you don’t know who bought you what it’s still tons of fun to open all the gifts!

I check my registry all the time too! I already know what I asked for so the gifts aren’t a surprise. The only surprise is who got us what!

I haven’t registered yet, but I can imagine I will be the exact same way about it as you!

I flat-out STALKED my registry, going on multiple times a day towards the end of my planning time…No shame, you know what you’re getting, I just wanted to exactly what was bought and when to expect it to arrive!!!

That cow picture is wonderful. I think when we get closer to the wedding I may stalk our registry, but now I’ve been to lazy to do so (remembering passwords, what!?!).

I used to think registry checking was horrible and people should just be patient. And then I got my own registry… aaaaand I’m a compulsive checker. I do it under the guise of making sure things aren’t discontinued/out of stock, so really, I’m doing it for the good of our guests. They should thank me.

I’m with ya, B. I’m still like 6 months out so after our engagement party I stopped stalking…but I imagine I won’t have quite as much willpower as you once things pick back up again.

I didn’t care for registering. FI is a chef so he was really particular on the kitchen things we added and I was bored, lol!

@Miss Snow Cone: I like the way you think!

Heheh, all of these comments are just encouraging me to go peek at everything. This is not good for my willpower! ;)
