About Mrs. Funnel Cake

You often hear about brides that start new health regimens when they are planning because they want to look and feel their best on their wedding day. I don’t necessarily support the idea of women losing weight just for one day so they can look skinnier and “prettier” in photos, but I do admire the women who use the wedding as a goal to jump-start the healthier lifestyle they’ve wanted.

Glasses Brides and Veils: Diving into Contacts : wedding beauty columbus Sell On sell_on

I happen to be one of those lucky bastards who has a fast metabolism and is naturally thin. The hating can start now…I know—it is unfair. I eat scads of chocolate and cheese and generally whatever I want. No…this post is not about me starting a wedding diet. I can assure you that’s not going to happen!

What I wasn’t blessed with is great eyesight. I’m not close to being blind, but I do have a moderate enough problem that the Swiss Strassenverkehrsamt told me I need to wear my glasses when I’m driving, and I get irritated if I forget my glasses and try to see a film with subtitles.

I have slowly gotten used to wearing glasses every day since my prescription has gotten stronger over the past few years, and as the spoiled brat of an ophthalmologist, I have four pairs of my current prescription:

Glasses Brides and Veils: Diving into Contacts : wedding beauty columbus Screen064 Screen+064

Armani - First pair ever. Sexy nerd glasses.

Glasses Brides and Veils: Diving into Contacts : wedding beauty columbus Screen065 Screen+065

Ted Baker - Classic and light. Mr. FC loooves these ones.

Glasses Brides and Veils: Diving into Contacts : wedding beauty columbus Screen066 Screen+066

Jai Kudo - A bit heavy at times, but very stylish. Maybe not as stylish as the A Christmas Story bunny suit, but I’ll let you be the judge of that.

Glasses Brides and Veils: Diving into Contacts : wedding beauty columbus Screen067 Screen+067

Safilo - My “old man” glasses. Can’t stress how much Mr. FC hates these. In fact, he takes them off of my face when I wear them in front of them. I think he’d be horrified if I walked down the aisle in them!

I did contemplate wearing glasses on the wedding day and, as you can see, many brides are simply gorgeous with their double eyes:

My problem is that none of my glasses will work well with a traditional veil. I don’t want to end up looking like this:

Glasses Brides and Veils: Diving into Contacts : wedding beauty columbus Screen070 Screen+070

In my mind, glasses and long veils don’t mix! For all the glasses brides out there…more power to you. But as much as I love all my glasses, I just do not want to wear them on my wedding day. Coupled with the fact that I always get caught in awkward glasses photos such as this:

Glasses Brides and Veils: Diving into Contacts : wedding beauty columbus Screen071 Screen+071

Foggy in the cold

Glasses Brides and Veils: Diving into Contacts : wedding beauty columbus Screen072 Screen+072

I was trying to be “sexy” for Mr. FC in this photo. **trying**

Glasses Brides and Veils: Diving into Contacts : wedding beauty columbus Screen073 Screen+073

This is prime example of glasses #fail. They’re covering up my eyes completely! I’d rather this not be an issue in half/all of our wedding photos.

Glasses Brides and Veils: Diving into Contacts : wedding beauty columbus Screen074 Screen+074

I even manage to get in weird glasses photos when I’m not wearing them!

Glasses Brides and Veils: Diving into Contacts : wedding beauty columbus Screen075 Screen+075

And here you can’t really see it, but Mr. FC pointed out how his eyebrow is pushing my glasses up. I’d rather not have my glasses be something we have to worry about when cuddling for intimate photos.

Now, I could walk around sans glasses on the big day, but do I really want all of the pretty details, including Mr. Funnel Cake, to be a little blurry? On our wedding day? No…I don’t think so. What’s that you say? Why don’t I just put my contacts in?

Folks, I have NEVER had contacts. Ever. You know that person at the doctor clenching their eyelids shut when the technician tries to take their eye pressure? That’s me. I have problems. They have to use the children’s eye-pressure pens on me because I’m a big baby.

I’ve been thinking about contacts for a while, but was always so scared about poking my eye that I’ve put it off. Now, thinking about wedding photos, I mulled over my contact dilemma again and thought maybe I should take the plunge. So in April I made my way to the doctor for my first contact-lens fitting.

How did it go? Well…the optometrist did give up on trying to put the contacts on me after about two minutes. She handed me over to her very patient, kind assistant who spent a good 40 minutes with me coaching me on how to do it myself. After a long struggle mauling my eyelids with my fingers…I finally got the little stinkers in and out and in again. I’m even wearing them as I type this! (Exciting!)

Now it’s off to the bathroom to take them out before bed and see if I can manage poking my eye for the 10,000,000,000th time today.

Did your wedding planning push you to make any lifestyle changes you’d been meaning to make?

I haven’t made any changes yet, but I will tell you that when I first got contacts (LONG time ago) I was incredibly frustrated with how slow my progess was to be able to insert them JUST right. After lots of practice though, I can say that it’s a breeze now. Hang in there! I dread having to wear my glasses now. Contacts are definitely worth it.

You will love your contacts once you get use to them. I use to be just like you. Now I can get them in/out in under a minute! :-P

I love my contacts, but I’m also blind without them, so there’s that. Can I say I love the awesome faces you make in pictures? And that bunny costume? Amazing.

My eyes are so bad, I’m legally blind without contacts OR glasses. I have a friend who is rather stunned by how bad my eyes are and she WORKS at an optometrist’s office. (Go me! lol) And they’ve been this bad since middle school (I graduated in 2000). In sixth grade, they were changing, I kid you not, EVER SIX MONTHS. Not a little, to the point I needed a new prescription. Contacts became a lifesaver. Probably literally. I just wish I could get lasik and have it covered by more than 50%…. even if I don’t have 20/20 vision and still need glasses/contacts, at least I wouldn’t be AS blind as I am now!!!!

After you figure out how to put them in and get them out the first few times, it’s a walk in the park. My brother SWORE he’d never wear them, and he does now. Frequently.

I took a big leap and got laser-eye surgery! I didn’t want to wear glasses for the wedding, and I’ve had contacts before and never liked them. I had the surgery (SBK with wavefront, in case you’re interested) May 6th and I am loving it!

The medical part of the surgery was managable. It was the emotional part. I’ve had glasses since I was 11 (15+ years) and so looking at myself in the mirror, my glasses are me. I liked how I looked in glasses. I still feel I look odd when I look in the mirror and at first I really wondered if everyone was staring at me and thought I look weird.

I have no regrets and I am really enjoying experimenting more with makeup (never really wore it before, except for special occasions). As my wedding isn’t until Oct, this time will also help people get use to what I look like without glasses and with makeup, so that on our wedding day, I won’t think people are staring at me, not recognizing me.

I was the same way in that I didn’t wear contacts for years and was so scared to put them in and hurt my eyes. Let me tell you, once I got the hang of those suckers, I was in LOVE. Now my contacts are my best friends :)

I know just how you feel! Putting contacts in (or anything remotely near my eye) was a horrible experience for me too. It took two weeks of struggling for an hour at a time to put my contacts in before I could even open my eyes more than halfway with them in. I’d think my eyes were open all the way and my mom would be telling me to open them because they looked half closed. But the good news is that by the third week or so I could put them in a little easier and and open my eyes a little wider and it just got better every day from there. So hang in there! It has been totally worth it for me.

I am going through this same thing!!! I am “supposed to” (aka never remember to) wear my glasses while driving and my distance vision is slowly getting worse!! I suffer through my day to day life but recently had this revelation that I may actually want to SEE people on my wedding day.
Going to the eye doctor in a few weeks to get contacts and I am FREAKING OUT!

I had the same dilemma for the longest time, I even got contacts last year. But then I got lazy and stopped wearing them. Well, the wedding really got me into gear. It was hard putting them in again (I spend at least 30 minutes per eye trying to get the contact in, some days, had to give up). But the light at the end of the tunnel came, just thir morning, my contacts went in on the first try! Now however, I still need to see with my doctor about the fact that they dry out fast and my prescription may not be right. But, getting there! Keep with it, it’s worth it. And don’t worry, the glasses are always there (I STILL love mine more than the contacts).

Once you get used to putting them in, they are great! I LOVE not worrying about my glasses bumping into things, getting crooked, etc. And it’s great for wearing sunglasses too!

@runninginpink: It will be fine! :) For me, I really really just needed time to sit there and learn how to do it. Patience is the key I think! And like all the others said, I’m getting used to it.

@lsabic: I so still love my glasses too! Actually when I came home from the appt wearing contacts, Mr. FC was alarmed I had them already because he loves my glasses so much. Too cute. Glasses are so nice for being lazy and comfortable in your own skin. :)

Personally I love your Armani nerd glasses, but I totally understand glasses and veils being a hassle. Maybe that was part of the reason I never really cared to wear a veil? If I could wear contacts I’d probably do it for my wedding day, but oh well, my eyeballs hate them so glasses it is.

You are going to look gorgeous no matter what!

I can’t ever take my glasses off because I would walk into something. I wouldn’t even be able to find my car keys, let alone drive! I used to have contacts (since I was 12) and after the first few times it was a breeze to put them in/take them out. I could do it anywhere! But as I got older, my eyes got dryer and dryer and dryer to the point where even the most breathable of contacts were unbearable. My last set (about 8 years ago) were contacts you were supposed to be able to leave in for a month straight - they were that porous. I couldn’t leave them in for 12 hours!
I’m going to try to rock the veil/glasses combo!

I used to have contacts when I was 19 & I loved them but my eyes got drier….so I reverted to glasses. Recently I tried for contacts again….they make them sooooo much better now!! It’s still not as awesome as without…but I’d be way too self-conscious to rock the glasses….more power to all the brides who will! :)

Don’t worry, it gets easier! The optometrist spent a full 40 minutes getting the contacts into my eyes when I got them for the first time last year. Now I get them in and out like a pro, but it for sure took a month or so before I could get them in quickly and on the first try 100% of the time. I just ran out so I made an eye appointment today so I can have some new contacts for my engagement photos this summer!

One trick I’ve found to taking out your contacts: after you wash and dry your hands, wet your finger with a little contact solution. It makes it much easier and more comfortable to take the contacts out.

@oatmealpie: that doesn’t make it slip too much? So far I’ve been using dry fingers to latch on to the contact and smoosh it toward my tear duct. It seems to get them out, but maybe I’ll test your wet method. I do need to get some more contact solution that you can use wherever… I have some big bottle of cleaner that can’t be used directly on the eye.

So much to learn about contacts. It’s like a whole new world!

I already wear contacts sometimes - but usually glasses… So much so that when I wear contacts, I still try to push my glasses up now and then :) But I do plan on wearing contacts for my wedding! My FI also wears glasses… We’re thinking he might do contacts as well - He has them already too, but they bother his eyes more than mine bother my eyes :) We shall see!
