About Ms. Sloth

Vanity Smurf No More

May 27th, 2011 @ 12:40 pm by Ms. Sloth

You know what one of the best things about the wedding being over and done with is? Besides the fact that I am married to my beloved, of course?

It’s that I no longer have to be super-concerned with every. single. aspect. of my appearance. Because I’ve never felt so vain as I did for the six weeks or so before the wedding:

  • Exactly a month before the wedding, I was in New Orleans with some friends. It was sunny and very warm, but I walked around with a cardigan and light scarf so that I wouldn’t get tan lines on my shoulders or chest.
  • Usually, when I get a blemish, my impulse is to pop that sucker (I know, I know). But I didn’t want scars, so instead of popping, I treated even the tiniest pre-wedding bump with expensive creams and serums.
  • When the woman who threads my eyebrows caused a tiny red bump under my brow two days before the wedding, I panicked that it would be visible in all of the photos (it wasn’t).
  • I tried to time my last hair trim so that it would be just a bit grown out by the wedding, but not yet ratty. Unfortunately, my bangs were way too long the day of (until Mr. S’ sister-in-law trimmed them for me that morning).
  • I got my mani/pedi first thing in the morning the day before the wedding and was paranoid all day and night that I’d chip a nail.

I am not usually this person (or this Smurf).

I mean, I try to take care of myself. I shower, I use creams and lotions, I apply makeup, I do my hair, I shave my legs. But I’ve never been the type to obsess over the most trivial parts of my physical appearance. I am not usually bothered by some faint tan lines, some chipped nail polish, some errant brow hairs, some split ends, or a little pimple.

But the pressure was on. All eyes (and camera lenses) would be on me and Mr. S at the wedding and I truly wanted to look my best.

But now that it’s over? I haven’t plucked my eyebrows since! I haven’t worn eyeshadow or mascara since the wedding! And I actually find comfort in my chipped manicure! I feel so free!

Did anyone else feel vanity relief after their wedding was over?

I am 3 months out as well and the thing I am looking forward to most…being able to wear a bikini with straps! I am so paranoid about tan lines. I still haven’t quite figured out how I am going to run this summer without getting them. Anyone ever heard of a running tube top? ;) No seriously, anyone?

I don’t feel so bad for buying swimsuits that won’t make weird tan lines now!!! ha ha ha! Yes, I can identify!

I was worried about tan lines when we went whitewater rafting the day before, so I had to wear a long sleeve shirt and hope that my hands wouldn’t be super tan. They weren’t.

I’m right at the point where I am going to start being neurotic about my appearance. It’s going to be a long 3+ months…

Weddings will do that to you. I realized the same thing you did when I started seeing pimples on my shoulders and feeling little ones coming over my face. It had been a while since those, and I’m quite prone to acne. Either I have let myself go or I was really on top of my skin before! But you know what? It doesn’t stop with brides. My mom stopped eating before the wedding -we were scared-. And everyone else seemed to be dieting as well for the big day. Once the wedding was done it was as if everyone exhaled deeply and loosened their pants in relief.

Hope your hard work shows up in the pics!

So with you on the tan line paranoia. For our friends’ DW a month ago, I bought 3 strapless swimsuits. But it wouldn’t have mattered b/c I slathered on so much sunblock! I’m looking forward to binging on guacamole, wine and sweets post-wedding.
