Mrs. Lox's Picture
Mrs. Lox, Baltimore Age and Occupation: 33, Government Worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35. IT Consultant Engagement Date: May 8, 2010 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Vandiver Inn About Me: I’m an East Coast gal born and bred and a suburban brat turned city rat for the last year. Now Mr. Lox and I enjoy walking all kinds of places, having the coolest things around in our backyard, and especially our garage parking. I love gadgets, toys, Ben & Jerry’s Chubby Hubby ice cream, monkeys, and our insane cats. I’m a blonde by birth and a redhead by choice. I’m that girl in the cubicle farm with all the cool toys and the file cabinet covered in magnetic poetry. I still use smiley faces in my emails, whether people like it or not. This is not the first rodeo for Mr. Lox nor me. And together, we are planning an intimate afternoon wedding on a budget we can afford by ourselves.
About Mrs. Lox

So, now that the planning stage is over, I am totally qualified to tell you about my favorite part of the planning process. And it might surprise you… at least I know it surprised me.

One of the things Mr. Lox and I decided to do a long time ago was to take dance lessons before the wedding. But then, as wedding planning kicked into high gear, neither of us could really find the time to research and find a place to take lessons. I was surprised to learn that it’s not as easy to find good dance lessons as I thought it would be. But then, it was Groupon to the rescue. We found a Groupon for a Ballroom Blitz class. It was four weeks long with a different dance being taught each week. We figured we could decide which one of the four would be right for our song and then we’d be set.

After the third group lesson, we realized that a class like that wouldn’t cut the mustard for what we really wanted. It was fun, and I’m totally glad we did it (would do it again in a heartbeat) but we needed private instruction. So, just a handful of weeks before the wedding, we went for a package of 10 private dance lessons with Beginning Ballroom. And hive, this was the best wedding planning decision we made.

The obvious benefit was a confident and nice looking first dance. You all get that. But it had another, even greater, hidden benefit.

For those 10 hours, all Mr. Lox and I had to do was concentrate on each other. There were no vendors to handle. There were no crafty projects to wrangle. We weren’t researching ideas or sweating over details. For those 10 hours, we were concentrating solely on each other. And we had fun. Those lessons turned into dates for us. We laughed, we touched, we were close to each other. They were stress relief and dates all rolled into one. So yeah, our first dance was pretty sweet. No hug and sway for us. But those dance lessons, they reminded us of why we were doing this whole wedding thing in the first place.

Now, as a prize for listening to me gush, here is a video of us from one of our last dance lessons. I was wearing my crinoline so we could have a realistic idea of how much space Mr. Lox needed to give me and he could learn not to step all over my dress. Or, you know, you can imagine it was my version of a fashion statement and laugh at me. Either or. ;)

Personal video - Mr. Lox and I taking dance lessons at the Beginning Ballroom studio.

Aren’t we cute? We really did enjoy these lessons and I can’t stress to you enough how beneficial they were. Mr. Lox and I are considering going back to continue taking lessons just because we had so much fun. And hey, everyone needs date night.

So what was/is your favorite part of wedding planning?

We took lessons too and they were so much fun! I would have loved to taken more and learned other dances but they were kind of expensive. The time together was a blast though and it was a great learning experience. Turns out I have a hard time letting him lead! Glad to know that now than on the wedding day!

We just signed up for our “bronze level” 23 more lessons! We had so much fun with the intro first 4 privates plus 4 group classes. You are right..it’s been a forced date night that we have really needed. We stop at a nearby bistro and have a cocktail and appitizer after work then head next door to waltz our clumzy feet off! lol We love it and plan to keep going even after the wedding..hence the 23 lessons we got roped into! lol We are doing a waltz for our first dance but are also learning some hustle moves as well as rumba, salsa and foxtrot. I wish I could practice with him in my shoes but A) I dont want him to see them and B) I worry that they will get dirty.
Thanks for the video!!!!!!!

Oh my gosh, you totally made me cry. That is a precious, priceless video. You two are so concentrated on each other and the love just comes shining right through.

Oh dear, now I know I’m going to blubber like a baby at dd’s wedding when their dance comes around…

I got that same groupon! How was the staff there? My fiance is an ex ballet dancer and I have two left feet. We are only two months away so I don’t think we have time left for private lessons. I haven’t even scheduled the group classes yet!

@lisamarieloves: It absolutely was! I loved it. :)

@geminidream: awwww, see your comment was so sweet it almost made me cry!

@Heather: Believe it or not, you still have time to get lessons in. I don’t think we started any earlier than 2 months out and neither one of us had a clue how to dance going in. Email them and tell them I sent you. Lee is awesome and I highly recommend the place. Seriously.

I spy a few promenades! You two are so in tune with each other in your lesson video. Four plus minutes too - bravo!

Dance lessons, while something new and time spent with Mr PaC, were not something I especially enjoyed. Maybe because we spent half our time dancing with the instructor and not each other. I’m glad we did it, but we aren’t as far along as I hoped after 5 lessons.

Aww, I’m sooooo jealous! Getting FI to even practice the sway to our song is like pulling teeth. I used to take dance classes growing up and part of me still misses it, even though I was never great or anything.

We’re doing dance lessons to spend time together before Wombat, our baby, is born. It’s fantabulous.

Loxy - I think we’re soul mates. Married the same weekend with the same first dance song?! It’s fate!
