Rabbits? Really? Part II

May 31st, 2011 @ 12:29 pm by Mrs. Macarons

Rabbits are more important than just a visual element on our invitations, in our decor, and in the Chinese Zodiac. We’re including a reading from The Velveteen Rabbit as part of our ceremony.

When my grandparents would stay with us during the winter, Nana would read it to me as part of my bedtime routine. It was my grandma’s story; I’m sure she grew tired of it, but I never did. When I told Mr. Macarons that I wanted to use it because it had a cute message, he said he wasn’t familiar with it and before he’d agree to it he’d need to read it. A few days passed, and during one of our weekend Skype sessions he revealed that while it was one the saddest childhood stories he’d ever read, it made him even more in love with me. How’d he figure?

It’s kind of hard to evaluate yourself—you tend to miss the qualities in you people value the most. According to Mac, the Skin Horse simply put into words what he’s always felt about me: If I love someone, I love the life out of them (my bunny is a good, tangible example), and then I love them some more no matter the consequences.

Mr. Macarons is a very strong and determined man; when he puts his mind toward something he works to accomplish it and never turns back. There was one time, though, prior to 2008, where he was ready to give up after years of hard work. Other people, including his friends and family, said he needed to give up his dreams and to do something else with his life. He asked me what he should do. That’s when I “became real.” I told him to keep trudging forward. While things had been difficult (I was fresh out of school at an underpaid position and our only source of income), I stood by his side and would continue to, as his goals were just as important as mine. It was hands down the toughest two years of our lives, but I’m happy to say, because of his perseverance and my support, these last five years have been simply amazing and life just keeps getting better every day.

Now, when our guests see all the bunnies, they’ll probably think, “Rabbits? Really?” No one can understand what they mean to us. But we’ll know.

The only part of our wedding where I actually found myself in tears was when my maid of honor put the “becoming real” quote into her speech about us. Oh my gosh - she kept turning her back on our guests because she was crying, and I REALLY started to lose it! Beautiful, absolutely perfect quote.

I think you two need to have a pet rabbit. My hubby and I have a pet rabbit, and he is litter box trained and hops around the house. Since rabbits are apart of lots of things for you - I think this would be a constant reminder to you two.

@paw: I’ve always wanted a bunny, but I don’t think out our cats would approve. Maybe some day though!

I totally used that excerpt in my wedding. I wanted to read it to my hubby, but every time I tried, I would start bawling. We had a reader do it, and I still cried like a baby! It’s the greatest, sweetest excerpt ever!

@Miss Macarons: our rabbit loves cats! Some cats tend to not appreciate him though. Other cats really like him. Depends on the cat’s temperament. We also have a 70 lb golden retriever, and our rabbit definitely runs our dog, and the dog answers to the rabbit - it is quite hilarious.

I am a huge fan of those details that mean the world to you and the groom and mean next to nothing to the guests… it’s so easy to get caught up in catering to the crowd that you lose your own identities/personalities in all of it. Go, rabbits!

I love going to events where there are personal details I “don’t get” because it makes me feel like I’m learning more about the person/people who chose those details. It’s also fun to dream up ideas about why they’re important to the person/people - even better if there’s a little explanation provided. Glad you and Mac are findings ways to incorporate what’s special to you!
