Mrs. High Wire, Dallas
Age and Occupation: 23, Legal Assistant
Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Director of Communications
Engagement Date: October 9, 2010
Wedding Date: September 2011
Venue: Clark Gardens
About Me: My loves include yoga, anything spicy, our eccentric cat, our rambunctious dog, and Mr. High Wire, of course! Like the steadiness act of the tightrope walker, this gal is busy balancing life while planning a wedding to the man of her dreams. We’re hosting a laid-back, vintage-inspired, bird themed wedding with heavy doses of love, good eats (did someone say tacos and margaritas?), and endless Texas charm. Mr. High Wire and I are so happy to have you along for the walk across the tight rope.
My FMIL (we’re pretty close, by the way) gave me a CD full of instrumental wedding music.
I may have listened to all of it one night while I was cleaning my apartment.
Whenever Mr. High Wire isn’t around (which is almost never), I love to indulge in SSB (secret single behavior). Now, I don’t stand in my kitchen eating crackers with jam on them, a la Carrie Bradshaw, but I do revel in the opportunity to listen to cheesy pop music and watch the most terrible of terrible wedding reality shows (Four Weddings, anyone?).
All of my SSB that evening revolved around the wedding, so there’s not much single-ness about it, but it was definitely something that Mr. High Wire would have NO interest participating in on a weeknight. Deep cleaning? No. Instrumental wedding music? No thanks. AND reality TV? He’d rather pour dirty laundry over his head.

Engagement Date: September 28, 2010
Wedding Date: May 2011
Venue: A church in downtown Nashville
About Me: I'm a native New Yorker who has always been a DIY kind of girl and loves tackling creative projects while getting the most out of a dollar. I'm marrying my college sweetheart and we love frequenting antique stores, exploring together, and playing with kittens. We're planning a fun, "us" wedding in his hometown---with as many handmade touches as we can pack into a day!
Last Tuesday, I got on the plane and made my final wedding trip to Nashville.

It was the longest trip I’ve taken to get here (not just figuratively either, between all the delays at LGA and Baltimore before finally arriving in Tennessee) but I finally made it.

About Me: I'm a small-town Midwest girl planning an intimate mountaintop destination wedding complete with a huge DIY at-home reception. As an honors graduate fallen victim to the worst job market in history in my area, we're doing everything we can to still have the wedding of our dreams on a tighter budget. I currently enjoy working at a winery, but I'm lonnng overdue for a day job! I am: a big-time daydreamer, one of the pickiest eaters you'll ever meet, and a lover of pretty paper and awesome fonts. I'm a girly girl who loves to get dolled up, but also a country girl who loves to get muddy and go 4-wheeler riding. I also enjoy singing in the car, boating, going to concerts, the History Channel, carnival food, and going to watch St. Louis Cardinals baseball with my handsome engineer.
Umm, literally…
Yep, the old farm house I’ve been speaking of is officially gone. Over the weekend the local fire department came out fully armed with a crew of newbies ready to be trained in the area of fire control.
Here is the house beforehand:

Yep, that’s where I got my boards for our rustic wedding signs!
Then the fire department came in:

Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Engineer

Wedding Date: August 2011
Venue: OMOS Church ceremony/Sunnehanna Country Club reception
About Me: I’m one of the lucky ones---I met my future husband at the ripe old age of 13, started dating him as a mature woman of 15, and have been enjoying the ride ever since. Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!
Given that our reception seating assignments are being communicated in a somewhat unusual manner and that our own seating is a bit unexpected, too, it really only makes sense to complete the wonky seating trifecta and use nontraditional table numbers. This is one of those ideas that I came across years ago and mentally filed away. I loved seeing pictures of themed table numbers (or names), showing off the couple’s hobbies, favorite foods, or travel histories.

I love flowers. Love them. There is no doubt that we will use flowers prominently at our wedding. And yet, we have not met with a florist. Why, you wonder? Well, because I am crazy and considering DIYing all of our wedding flowers.

Mrs. Funnel Cake, Zürich, Switzerland/Columbus, Ohio
Age and Occupation: 24, Visual Communication Designer
Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Application Engineer
Engagement Date: May 30, 2010
Wedding Date: October 2011
Venue: Catholic church followed by a botanical conservatory
About Me: I'm an American designer who moved to Switzerland for love after a fairytale beginning at the top of the Eiffel Tower. I love travel, photography, museums, learning German so I can speak with my mother-in-law, cooking (eating), cuddling, and I'm not afraid to try something new even if it terrifies me. My Swiss/Brazilian man and I are both down to earth people planning a traditional Catholic wedding in my hometown with some quirky cultural exceptions to reflect our different backgrounds. We look forward to celebrating with friends and family from all over the world in a classic, sophisticated fusion of heritage and love.
As the month of March began, Mr. Funnel Cake and I went through a whirlwind of stressful events when I tried to resign from work and found out I was legally obligated to stay there until the end of 2011. Crazy, eh? We thought so.
After lots of tears and turmoil, I was finally granted my release. And somehow, among all this drama, we were able to complete our marriage preparation class!

I mentioned earlier, our first encounter with Father John was a little abrasive, especially for an emotionally fragile woman like me. After our brutal interrogation interview, I had almost thought Father John would tell us to just forget it and that we weren’t welcome in the church. It turns out Father John is just a cynical Scott with a good sense of humour!

About Me: I'm a girl from down under who grew up in Indonesia and I'm marrying a California boy. I'm addicted to all things sweet, have never met a chocolate silk pie than can get the better of me, and have dreams of one day being a fulltime novelist. I go weak in the knees for lace, tea cups, and a beautifully crafted sentence. When I get excited about something (whether it is historical linguistics or the Beatles) I tend to go overboard in research, and planning this wedding is no different. Mr. Earrings is my high school sweetheart, my best friend, and somehow we combine all our quirks into one big happy mess.
I interrupt my recaps to bring you the news that within the *great* tradition of bride prices, apparently I am worth 150 pigs. Let me back up a little. You know how Mr E and I both grew up in West Papua, the easternmost province of Indonesia? Pretend you remember that for this post anyway. In most Melanesian cultures (such as those of Papua), it is still commonplace for a prospective groom and his family to pay the bride’s family in pigs for her. Now, everyone who knows me knows that I lean more than a little to the feminist side of the spectrum, so during my dad’s speech on our wedding day, he couldn’t resist playing a joke on me by asking Mr E how many pigs he could pay.
On a spur of the moment, Mr E said 150. And little did I know, but the story didn’t stop there!

About Me: An ENFJ with an artistic streak who loves backgammon, sailing, graphic design, and sleeping in. Travel (near or far), good wine, and tasty food makes my heart sing. I'm a compulsive list-maker who lives to plan and organize. Mr. P and I have lived together for 4 years, all the while renovating our city townhome bit by bit. We're planning a whimsical, Anthropologie-inspired garden wedding in June 2011.
Our final head count is due to our caterer today, but we’re ahead of the game! Because our guests are the kind, responsible sort, they returned their RSVPs promptly. The last of our RSVPs were waiting for us after our Mexico trip. It’s taken me a little while to compose this post because I wanted to supplement the stats with pie charts. That’s right. Pie charts!
The Yays and the Nays: Who’s in
Total # of guests - 101
Yes responses - 85 (not including us)
No responses - 14

Nom nom nom
With such a trim guest list, we were surprised (but understood why) a large group of people couldn’t make it. Part of my extended family would have driven between 15-18 hours to make it to our shindig. Quite a haul! Others wanted to join us and were bummed to decline because of health or work reasons.
Our first draft of the guest list was close to 120, which did not include kids. Which leads me to the first statistical topic!

Today we’re going to chat a bit about flower girls.
First, a few tidbits:
Flower girls usually proceed down the aisle before the maid of honor, following the ring bearer, if you have one. Sending two flower girls down the aisle at the same time helps to add confidence to the girls and gives them a buddy to walk down the aisle with. We plan do send two at a time, for sure. Make sure to explain their duties well in advance, and allow their parents to pump the kids up with pep talks.
Flower girls can choose to either sit with their parents after walking down the aisle or stand up with the rest of the bridal party. Our two eldest girls will probably remain standing.
One weekend my FMIL and I wound up at the mall to start getting some ideas about flower girl dresses. We’re having a total of four girls in the wedding party, who will be ages four, five, ten, and twelve for the wedding. The four- and five-year-old both have the most beautiful fiery red hair, and it goes perfectly with these dresses we found. They look like sisters but are actually first cousins.

Ladies, I cannot for the life of me find wedding shoes! I did not think that it was going to be this hard! Nothing is jumping out at me. I had my mind made up from the beginning that I didn’t want traditional bridal-y shoes…I want something fun that I’ll wear again.
Sparkly shoes seem to be the trend right now…

It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!
Mr. Snow Cone and I never really considered doing favors. We weren’t too gung-ho about putting together a couple hundred of a certain item, only to end up with many being left at the table at the end of the night. We didn’t want to hand off some random piece of junk to our guests that they have absolutely no need for…it would be a waste on multiple levels for everyone involved. However, having the guests leave the reception without any sign of gratitude from us was simply not an option. Thankfully, we came up with a way to express our thanks to our guests without going the traditional favor route.
Our answer? The charitable donation. Mr. Snow Cone and I were able to come up with any number of causes we deemed worthy of getting a little extra funding as a result of our wedding. Sure, all of our guests might not necessarily appreciate this approach. Some may disagree with our idea to do charity donations at all, and some may disagree with our charity of choice. At the risk of sounding rude, that’s not really a concern of ours. We really like the idea of expressing some generosity in conjunction with our grandiose celebration, and we’ve found a cause that we feel strongly about. So, regardless of our guests’ opinions on the matter, our minds are made up.
