About Ms. Ferris Wheel

A Principled Choice

June 1st, 2011 @ 5:29 pm by Ms. Ferris Wheel

As overwhelmed as I was by needing to pick dresses for some of the gorgeous women in our wedding party, I wasn’t desperate enough to let go of what is perhaps my only abiding principle when it comes to dress shopping. Under *no* circumstance would I pick a dress from a retailer that did not sell plus-sized dresses. Obviously there’s a back story here, and it has nothing to do with our wedding party. Nope—this time, it’s personal. (Doesn’t that sound so dramatic?!)

I’ve only been a bridesmaid once, and this was the dress I was told to buy:

A Principled Choice : wedding bridesmaid dress san francisco 1 1

Lorelei from J. Crew

Sounds easy enough, right? Well, as you know I have been a plus-size girl for a long time and moreover, I am particularly well-endowed in the chest area. Can you see where this is going?

Um, yeah. So J. Crew sizes go up to a 16. Now take a look at the side view of the top portion of that dress. Even if I could’ve fit into a size 16 waist, there was never any hope that my busty self could have squeezed into the bodice of that dress. Because I didn’t really have a relationship with the bride, I didn’t feel I could call her and explain the situation. So what could I do? The only real option I saw (besides backing out, and you gotta really make that your last resort) was to buy two dresses and find a seamstress to magically create a whole new dress for me. And that’s exactly what happened, but let me just tell you this… In the end, that one bridesmaid dress cost me almost $600!

Needless to say, it left me with an embarrassingly bad taste in my mouth. So when it came to choosing dresses for my own wedding, I vowed to veer far, far away from designers and manufacturers that offer only limited sizes. That means none of these beauties will ever get to compete for the affection of our wedding party members.

Dress sources from L-R: J. Crew, White House Black Market, Banana Republic, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, Mod Cloth}

I could easily shop plus-size only departments, but that won’t work for all our party members (unless I wanted to retaliate against the universe by forcing our small-framed wedding party folk to cough up the money to pay for expensive alterations as some sort of plus-sized cultural immersion experience— but I’m not *that* evil).

I quickly figured out that taking this stand would likely mean purchasing dresses from a big name bridal retailer, and that was totally fine with me. So we considered David’s Bridal, Alfred Sung, and Alfred Angelo (what’s up with dress designers named Alfred?), all of whom offer sizes up to at least 26 and often 30.

In a world of sheer madness where it’s my job to choose another grown person’s attire, knowing that I practice what I preach gives me just a little bit of much-needed peace.

What are your abiding principles when it comes to your wedding, and what kind of principled choices have you made?

such a great post, FW. my BM’s had a wide array of chest sizes and I wanted to offer them a choice of styles that fit great, looked great and made them feel great, just like you. Your BM’s will thank you a hundred times over for this. :)

This was a concern of mine too. It just seems so wrong that my posse should be made to feel bad during a time I wanted them to feel loved.

Check out Siri too. They are made in SF. I don’t know what sample sizes they carry, but their dresses go up to sizes 20-24.

Definitely a concern of mine as my MOH is plus-size and then it goes down to my smallest maid at about a size 4. I also refuse to ask them to pay too much money for the dress and my goal is to keep it under $200. It’s just one day, and a dress they may never wear again, so I’m not about to ask them to clean out their bank account for it!

I’m not that evil either, but I did get a little giggle out of asking the smaller bridesmaids to buy plus sized and have it altered. *giggle*

I do not understand why JCrew (and others) are not more bridesmaid friendly in their sizing, it just doesn’t make sense to me. Your BMs will be grateful for your thoughtfulness, I’m sure!

My principled choice? NO bouquet toss (and no garter toss either). I hated the bouquet toss when I was single, so I don’t want to inflict that on anyone. And I not a fan of the garter at ALL.

Oh my gosh, $600 for a bridesmaid dress? Um, did you like it and wind up wearing it afterwards? I have to admit, I love Alfred Sung gowns and those dresses were also faves of the Gazelle Girls (one of whom is plus, the other is not). In the end my mom is making the dresses though to save some cash.

I feel your pain. Thankfully, I didn’t have to spent *that* much on alterations, but I did have to pay for both a designer dress and alterations because my waist was a 8 size, and at the time thanks to the newlywed 15lbs I gained, my chest a couple sizes larger.
I know how hard it is to find a dress that I like on my body, so for my girls, I just picked colors I wanted them to wear, and a tea length, and they could pick whatever they wanted.

I have to admit, one of my major principles was not dictating to another grown woman what she’s going to wear! Not that I have any problem with your decision to do so, it just ain’t for me.

I love how considerate you are being though, I think too many people aren’t very good at that.

I had to wear the exact same dress as a bridesmaid too (JCrew Lorelei) and my boobs were squished beyond belief. I opted for dresses that came in all shapes and sizes for similar reasons to you.

I think your stand is awesome. I actually wouldn’t mind being forced to buy something at a plus-size only retailer and have it altered down if that’s what a friend asked me to do - the fact that so many stores won’t make or relegate plus size to online-only annoys the crap out of me.

Bridesmaid dresses were one of the issues where laziness won. We debated back and forth if we wanted mismatched, same color and line, same dress… and then eventually I was like “ok, guys, we’re less than four months out. go buy yourself a dress. in green. or another color that is kind of like green.”

I’m a plus size bride and my attendants are all plus sized. I’ve shopped around for dresses and almost every manufacturer of maids dresses has plus sizes. True, the more non-traditional sources don’t have a lot of plus sizes, but they don’t carry plus sizes anyway. Try http://www.shabbyapple.com, http://www.plussizebridal.com/, http://www.nexteve.com/catalog/plussize-dresses/, or even Etsy (Just about every dress designer will work with your measurement and can fit everyone from a size 0 to 30). The other place to check are choir catalogs (that’s where I got the dresses for my first wedding in 1998). While it can be frustrating when we PS brides can’t find clothing in the regular stores, keep in mind that your very petite friends have a similar problem.

Your bridesmaids are lucky that you are so thoughtful, so they dont have to go through the same experience as you had to!

Great post! Another option you could try is ordering online. I found this worked for me because my BMs are in different countries, but you can also request the dresses to be made to measure in the exact size so each of your girsl gets a good fit regardless of their shape/size. I used lightinthebox, I know some of the other bees have had bad experiences with them but I found them to be pretty good, and not too expensive. They also have standard colours and fabrics so you could choose different dress styles for each girl and they would still match in terms of colour and fabric. I have posted a review on the boards if you’re interested.

Before I even got engaged, I had picked a color of Alfred Angelo that I loved and I knew that I was going to tell my girls to pick their own dresses. I was in my cousin’s wedding (she’s my MOH!) and she had nine bridesmaids… all of us have different body types, and yet no one was able to get the dress altered to fit right (despite all using different places for alteration) and her sisters still complain about those dresses. I didn’t want to hear any of that, about my wedding, which is why I told them to pick for themselves.

Here’s the thing - I *did* have to buy the size 16 dress from J. Crew - and those bastards run SMALL.. I’m normally a 12/14, and my DD gals popped a seam RIGHT before walking down the aisle.. the seamstress that had helped alter the hem (because I’m also short - hey dress designers not all size 16 girls are 6 feet tall!) said and I quote “J.Crew gives our store a LOT of business”. Screw J Crew.

Awwww, FW. I feel you. That bride did you a big old disservice though. It’s the job to the person picking the dresses to do so with the people they intend to dress in mind. I’m actually angry for you right now.

Anyway, that’s not very helpful. I’m sure your girls will really appreciate how thoughtful you’re being.

I have to agree with @Mrs. Lox.
I would never have chosen a BM dress from a place if there was a chance that any of the girls wouldn’t fit in the dress!

Also, I love the Alfred Sung dresses, but I’m biased–that’s what my girls wore! I picked a color, they chose a style. So easy.
