Romanticism #fail

June 1st, 2011 @ 8:14 am by Mrs. Funnel Cake

Back in summer 2009, when I was stranded in Ohio, miiiles away from Mr. Funnel Cake while my visa processed before I could return to Switzerland, I spent a lot of time on the couch watching TLC.

In one of the many episodes of Little People, Big World, Amy and Matt shared a story about how whenever they are in a crowd or at a party, they look at each other from across the room and say “elephant shoes” because the words form the same shape as saying “I love you.”

Closet romantic that I am, I thought it was incredibly adorable and I wanted to start saying this with Mr. Funnel Cake. When I got back to Switzerland, I explained the elephant shoes story to him and then forgot about it for a while. One day Mr. Funnel Cake murmured something to me. My response?

What did you say? Elephant shit?!”

Mr. Funnel Cake burst out laughing. In his attempt to romantically use “elephant shoes” on me, I’d completely ruined the moment with my bad hearing and thick head. We thought it was so funny that we still mouth “elephant shit” to each other to this day, and it always makes both of us smile and laugh.

Even earlier in 2009, we were walking home one day and I was walking with rather large, slow steps so as to avoid rain puddles on the ground. Mr. Funnel Cake said I was walking like something…what was the name of it? This grey animal, large…with a trunk? “You mean elephant?” I dumbly replied, totally falling for Mr. FC’s “I can’t speak English very well” act.

I scoffed when I realised he had caused me to call myself an elephant. The little devil! Pretending he didn’t know the word just to get me to say it…to this day he still calls me “his little elephant” as a result.

Do you have any accidental pet names or inside jokes that resulted from failed romanticism?

That is adorable! I love your story. We too have a funny exchange that resulted in a new nickname. FI used a computer program to text when he was at home. The name involved letters and roman numerals. I never asked him what it meant and seriously just assumed it was “Forty-foot Andy.” One day I asked him why it he had this name and of course it said something else, but he is “Forty-foot Andy” to this day.

Due to Family Guy, my guy will lean close and sweetly whisper, “Happy Halloween” in my ear when I’m expecting “I love you”. It never fails to make me laugh. :-)

Such a cute story. My husband’s pet name was created to annoy the crap out of him with it’s gooshiness.

That’s very cute :P

The best/worst one that’s stuck with us is that we call each other “dear” – it started as a joke as all our friends said we act like an old couple, so we started using it in front of our friends to add to the joke…and now we use it as our standard pet name! It stuck well and truly.

I have long toes and can pick things up with them. After we’d been dating about a month, I (without thinking) did this in front of FH. He died laughing and has called me “monkey” ever since. So now every time I travel without him, I search to find a small monkey souvenir for him.

Oh. my. gosh. I read this and spit coffee all over my monitor at work. I’m trying to hold in the giggles while thinking how romantic “Elephant shit” would be to say to my FH. ;)

Thanks for this :D We have no accidental nicknames… but I add an ‘ly’ to his name to make it more cute-sy and he adds an ‘a’ to the end of mine because I hate it and people always add the ‘a’ just because ;)

hahaha I love that! Because of the movie “stepbrothers,” I sometimes call Mr. Snow Cone my “curly-headed f___”. He appreciates it, I swear :)

Haha! I once called my fiance my Prince Charming and he thought I said Pastrami so now he’s “my pastrami”. And he calls me his “beyonce” instead of fiance. It’s definitely an inside joke for us but we love the pet names.

My FH forgot what you call someone you’re going to marry so he asked, “Is it called au jus? Au gratin?” I died laughing and told him he meant fiance, but au jus and au gratin has stuck.

Haha this is too cute! Sparks calls me “bologna”, since I once embarrassingly admitted that as a little kid I would only eat bologna and cheese sandwiches for lunch. If it wasn’t packed in my lunch box, I’d give everything else away and go hungry. I was a weird kid.

My fiance and I tell each other “olive juice” for the same reason. :)

*LAUGHS* I love this story!

Ours may be a lil TMI for some *blushes*

When I was first dating my fiance, I wanted to wait as long as possible before consumating our fledgling romance. One evening I was wearing a pair of black dress pants and refused to wiggle out of them, much to his dismay.

Of course, it wasn’t long before I crumbled and we have been desperately in love for almost 5 years now, but after that night he started calling me “Pants”… because they drove him crazy, trying to convince me to take them off. I hated it. I wanted a sweet term of endearment… not “Pants”. However, it stuck.

When my (70+ and very conservative) parents asked how I came to have the nickname, my boy told them it was because I’m a Smarty Pants *chuckles* NICE SAVE!

When people ask me, I tell them it’s because I wear the pants in the family ;) Very few people know it’s because I just made him work so hard to get into them *blushes*.

Hah! We say olive juice.

I also had my fiance’s (only 3 days left until I get to say husband’s) wedding ring engaved ‘nub lu’.
We’ve been saying it from years, after watching an episode of That 70’s Show where one of the characters couldn’t come to say ‘i love you’ to his girlfriend and said nub lu instead.

Still think I should have engraved ‘My Poobag’ because he always seems to have a bag of our dogs poop in his hands, the name just stuck. My family and friends convinced me otherwise though.
