Expanding the Pony Family

June 2nd, 2011 @ 10:08 am by Mrs. Pony

First, no, I am not pregnant.  Nor is this post about babies.

This is about how Mr. Pony and I recently expanded our family with two kittehs!

Meet George and Gracie (This picture happened without my intervention.)

As if wedding planning weren’t making us crazy enough, the Ponies decided to adopt two crazy-ass kittehs a few weeks ago. They were practically fully grown when we brought them home, but we have managed to pretty much double their weight in the short time we’ve had them (spoiled piggies).

We adopted them from a feline rescue group and their history is mostly unknown. We are pretty sure that they are litter mates since they are practically identical in size and coloring, except that George is slightly darker and their white spots differ. Despite being brother and sister, their temperaments could not be more different.

George is laid back. Nothing bothers him. He was immediately comfortable with us and his new home. Oh, and he is the king.

You are my bitches. Now pet me.

Gracie is easily excitable, but not always in a good way. She’s still getting accustomed to living with us and doesn’t quite trust us yet. When she is sleeping or trying to get food, however, she can be the sweetest thing. And she has the softest fur ever!

Distrusting eyes

Both kittehs are already super spoiled with daily treats and a custom-made (by Mr. Pony) cat throne in our living room.

Their likes include chasing each other, watching birds out the window, getting into every nook and cranny of our house, licking my phone (why?!), and being ridiculously cute:

I don’t know why she was licking her brother, but it was so cute!

Even Mr. Pony, the self proclaimed cat hater, is loving our new additions and has so much fun playing with and (occasionally) antagonizing them.

Mr. Pony and I have been working as a team not only to train them (no scratching! no eating my Lucky Charms! no escaping!), but we also share the responsibilities of cat rearing, such as feeding, grooming, and scooping the litter box. In a way, caring for our new kittehs has solidified that in a few months we are really becoming the Pony family, not just a married couple. And that feels good.

Have you and your partner adopted a pet together? Did it change your relationship for the better or worse? Is it crazy to adopt pets when planning for a wedding?

Please tell me those names were in honor of a certain pair of whales and I am not just an enormous dork…or it’s a huge coincidence.

10 months before my wedding (July 9th!) my fiance and I adopted a kitten - he, too, was a self-professed cat hater, but now he talks baby-talk to her, and cuddles her whenever possible. There is nothing sweeter than a big tough man cuddling a pet!

We did! I love that it solidified us as “family”. I actually got the kitten while my husband was finishing up our LDR in Cali for company, but he helped pick her out on a visit and they adopted each other when he finally moved home. Now she likes him better than me :( She looks exactly like your girl kitty except she’s got some white spots randomly on her toes and chest.. and seems to have the same rambunctious/distrustful streak even after we’ve had her over two years. #sigh.

They are adorable! Mr and I just adopted a *third* kitten a few months before the wedding, and let me tell you, it’s the third mouth to feed that breaks the bank! We had our first 2 cats for three years, no problems. This third monster eats like a horse! My fiancée was also a cat hater, but he’s the one who suggested we get 2 instead of one, and it was his idea to get the third! Adopting cats has showed him that COMPROMISE is good! (my insistence on getting pets vs him hating cats) !!

We got a puppy in January and are getting married in July. Not sure it was the smartest idea, but it was worth it. And it definitely added the “family” aspect to our relationship! Actually, my fiance was the first one to point it out one day, and I totally agree.

@cosmo_gmr: Thanks, we love them too, you know, most of the time.
@Guest: I wish I could say we named them after the whales (we’re pretty big dorks), but we didn’t. We picked Gracie for her color (soooo original) and George for George Burns (so George Burns and Gracie Allen).
@Kat: It’s so cute isn’t it?
@Miss Jam: Yes, they will be in plenty of pictures, mostly because they won’t leave me alone whenever I try to work on something. Get used to these faces!
@gatorhailey: I think it’s kind of a girl cat thing. We’ve had girl cats in the past and they were always that way, but I still loved them dearly.

@lsabic: Oh my gosh, I love puppies, but they are a handful. I didn’t think they would change our relationship, but it puts things in a different (and good) light.
@TheFutureMcBride: Me too, well, it was actually my dad’s idea, but I loved it, so I’m claiming it too. We used to breed lab puppies and the litter mates always shared a unique bond, so it’s fun to see it in cats now too.

Fur babies!! So cute! I’ve got two kitties (one was a gift from Mr. Bunting) that I had before we moved in together. The gift cat is exceptionally sweet and would win over any cat hater, but the other one is a bit…. moody. And needy. And very fluffy. She tries Mr. Bunting’s patience time and time again. It’s been strain on me now and then because I so deeply want them to get along, but Mr. Bunting is a champ and despite their differences, he puts up with her (for the most part). I think when we add a dog to the mix, we’ll have even more of that “family” element.

Oh i love your kittehs! Are they both spayed and neutered? I see that Miss Gracie has a hairless tummy ;)

I took in a sweet baby boy, Renfield, from the animal shelter in Wyoming in Jan 2008 because the fiance was still in school, not living with me and I was lonely. Then when the fiance moved in, we got another cat to keep the other cat company when we went out (makes sense, right?).

We adopted Bob in September of 2008 from the same animal shelter because he was sweet and was on the to-be-put-down list because of his age (3!) and he had a severe upper respiratory infection.

He is now sweet, happy and a HANDFUL. They’re our kids, and we love em ;)

Oh I love them!! I really really really want a cat, but we’re not allowed in our building. :(
My parents’ cats are sisters, its actually pretty neat that they came from the same litter.

Oh. Em. GEEEE! I love grey kittehs, and they look absolutely adorable!!! My SO and I got a 2-year-old little black rescue dog about over a year ago– she has definitely changed our lives for the better, and she is definitely SUPER DUPER spoiled (and she also managed to gain about 10 pounds after we got her– good thing too, since her poor little ribs were showing!).

They look so cuddly!! I love them!

My FI and I adopted a cat almost three years ago now. She’s sometimes the source of contention because he claims I don’t clean her litter box enough (I do it daily, or on rare occasion have gone two days - he just gets irritated that I don’t do it the second I step in the door), and also I didn’t have the heart to get her declawed, so I use claw caps on her, but occasionally one comes off and she gets a few good digs in at the sofa. He claims he’s never going to let me get another cat again. But I know he loves her. He picks her up and talks to her. It’s adorable.

Aww your gray kitties are so purty! I’m biased, 3 of our 4 pets are that color gray :) I think adopting pets is the best thing ever, even if its in the midst of wedding planning, they are great at making you smile and comforting you when you need it, good decision!

We got a cat shortly after moving in together. It took her more than 6 months to get used to living with us, and she has abandonment issues (we’re the third family to adopt her. No one has had her for more than a year, due to medical concerns and then a cross-country move). She gets very anxious when we travel, but we’re hoping this changes. We travel a lot!
It does make us feel like more of a family too :)
