Mrs. Macarons's Picture
Mrs. Macarons, Tampa Age and Occupation: 26, Graphic Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 34, Renaissance Man Engagement Date: September 12, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: Lange Farm About Me: I'm creative at heart and a graphic designer with an unhealthy obsession with type. I love roller coasters, spicy foods, and a good glass of Crianza. We’re planning a soft and lovely vintage-meets-modern wedding in a state that’s known for its beaches, glitz and glam. I have a ton of DIY projects and lots of little details I’m dying to share and can't wait to celebrate with our closest friends and family.
About Mrs. Macarons

One of the first craft projects I took on besides the save the dates was making a feathery, flowery clip to wear in my hair on our wedding day. I know you haven’t seen my dress, but I’m keeping it a secret as Mr. Macarons checks the blog and has almost become as bad as me when it comes to surprises. So my accessories and other frilly things will just have to do for now.

Anyway, I had a love affair with Fay and Lyla by Lo Boheme.

Their softness and simplicity won me over, but their cost didn’t. They looked pretty straightforward, so with the help and guidance of many a bee, I gave it a shot. Please note: I didn’t take any pictures during the process, so these were taken after the fact.

I purchased both kinds of feathers from Etsy and the fray check, chiffon, and netting from Hancock Fabrics. The ivory felt I had left over from making our cake topper. I made a template in two different sizes, pinned it on top of my fabric, and got to cutting. The fray check helped some…maybe I didn’t use enough? Once I cut out a sufficient amount of petals in each size, I stacked them with placement of each petal slightly off.

I did a quick stitch in the middle to hold them in place, and I was halfway there. Then I pinched and twisted and stitched different petals and layers together so it began to gather and gain some volume. The final step was to sew a few wispy feathers to a circle of felt, glue it to the back of the flower, and attach it to a clip.

But to me it was missing something. Maybe some pearls or a sparkly center? More feathers? More pouf? I couldn’t figure it out. It sucks when you’re so gung-ho about a project only to be underwhelmed by the results. What’s a bride to do?

Ha! Right now, I’m attempting the one Miss Gazelle posted. I was getting back on here to look at her directions b/c mine is looking less than perfect! I feel your pain!

It looks really pretty! I think it may benefit from a cluster of sparkle in the middle, nothing too ‘out there’..maybe a barely seen cluster? but it looks great how it is!

This happens with like 99% of the DIY projects I do, so at least you’re not the only one!

It looks great! You could try a little pearl/sparkle combonation in the center but nothing to dramatic. It’s beautiful as it is :)

You did a great job. I’d be happy to wear that flower.

It needs some bling!

I think it looks great, and I agree with the fellow bees on this one. Add a little sparkle or a pearl for some depth and help your flower find its center. You have done a great job creating that soft feathery look that love in your pictures. Try going to a jewelry store or even a thrift store and look through the good, fun sparkly stuff. Maybe part of an old earring, or a broach will help complete the look you are going for. :)

I think all it needs is a little sparkle or something in the center, like you said. It’s really pretty though, don’t give up!

Thanks for your support ladies! I’ve been looking for something with pearls and a little sparkle but haven’t found anything quite right. Maybe I should hit up a few thrift stores for a brooch.

Looks to me like this difference between the Etsy on and yours is petal size. You appear to have a ton of same size petals and the Etsy one looks like the petals get smaller as they go up. You might try folding some in half or quarters and pinning them on to give it more dimension too. Just my thoughts…and maybe if you attached some rhinestones to a wire (kind of like the things you can use to add pearls or rhinestones to your bouquet) and stuck them in beneath a couple of layers it would give it the sparkle you want and ad some poofiness to the flower?

It looks good! My DIY hair flower was a total fail. I made 3 and hate them all. :(

It almost looks as if there are tooo many layers, but I agree with the others that if you put a little grouping of sparkly bits or pearls it would complete it!

I personally think it looks fabulous as is but I don’t think a little sparkle would hurt ;) Nice work, Mac…your crafting skills mesmerize me!

I think that one point of difference that may be causing you to not like it, it the feathers. In the inspiration photo the feathers are “scattered” around the flower. Your DIY flower has them largely centered on one side of the flower. I’m not really sure how you could do this but if you spread the feathers out more it might help. I think it looks beautiful though

Hey, your flower looks pretty good! Two things that helped me: (a) graduated petal size (larger ones toward the bottom) will help it to “flower” more and you can use an earring for the center.

I like that you added tulle to yours. I used tulle for the first flower I made, but not the second… I forget why. But it looks nice with tulle! :)

I really like the different texture of all of the materials you used. I think your flower looks great! I think maybe a pearl or a sparkly center would add a bit of pizazz, but then you are there!!
