To Top It All Off

June 6th, 2011 @ 11:14 am by Mrs. Bunting

I hated cake toppers. It’s true. I thought they were all ugly and cheap looking, and there was no way I was going to have one on our cake. I’m not big into monogrammed letters, either, so I wouldn’t even consider having bejeweled initials. I was resolved to use real flowers or to make something myself.

Looking back on my naive self, I can’t help but laugh. Not because I’ve changed my mind about monogrammed initials, but because I thought that’s all the wedding world had to offer when it came to cake toppers. Again, this is where I love the internet, especially Etsy, because it opens up a whole new world of opportunities. Granted, I still cringe at the majority of cake toppers (I’m picky about proportions and aesthetics, what can I say?), but there are some reeeeeeally great ones available! So many, in fact, that I’d be hard-pressed to pick a favorite. Let us explore the wonderful possibilities together. Shall we? Yes, we shall.

Lovebirds have been a popular choice lately, and with good reason. There are plenty of styles to choose from, too:

And of course we can’t forget the ones that feature a bride and groom customized to look like, who else, your partner and you!

Which one is your favorite, and what are your plans for your cake topper? Are you buying one or are you making it yourself? Share the topper love!

For you, I like BooCoo Washi Art and Lollipop Workshop because they remind me of your invites. However, the birds are super cute.

I got mine at Star House (urastarhouse) on etsy. It was perfect. Of all of the vendors that I worked with, she we was my favorite.

I actually have the birdies from Red Light Studio and Le Petit Oiseau. The Le Petit Oiseau’s ones were on our cake and the birdies from Red Light Studio were supposed to just sit on the cake table, but someone forgot to put them out :( No worries though, Miss Jaguar is using them in her wedding :)

Love all of the Etsy options out there for toppers! I need to find a display box for ours.

Personally, I love the birdies from Red Light Studio. I could totally be partial because we ordered them in March and our pair should be here next month!

Haha, I just wrote a post on this! And I have some of the same pictures as inspiration! :) I take that to mean I have good taste. Can’t wait to see what you went with, B.

I’m hand crafting and painting my own a la Alexander Girard’s folk art dolls. That last one would be a great match for your (ah-may-zing) invitations.

I love the chibi bride and groom ones from BooCoo Washi Art! Adorable! A super talented friend is making our toppers based on the concept art of ATLAS and P-Body, the two little robots from Portal 2. Perfect for our “mostly DIY with a few nerdy homages” wedding!

I’m SO diggin’ the penguins! Actually, I’m making our cake topper…it will be a monogram initial that I will festoon with vintage earrings, bracelets…stuff I have laying around. I’m going for the bling.

I picked up two little painted wooden birds and a tiny next from a flea market a couple of months ago. They are going to be our cake topper :)

I LOVE that heart cake topper up there. So unique!

They’re all super cute but the Lollipop one reminds me SO much of your invites that I thought you designed it! I love it for you guys :D Can’t wait to see which ones you ended up picking.

I love the bunting and I have a favorite bride and groom customized one by MudCards on Etsy, but our cake is one place we went a little more formal and traditional (at the request of my parents, which I was happy to acquiesce). We went with a mickey and minnie bride and groom lennox figurine to give a nod to our love of Disneyland. It will be placed on the side of our cake.

toppers are pretty low on our to-do list, so I’m thinking fresh flowers may be our eventual winner…
