About Mrs. Funnel Cake

My First Crush

June 6th, 2011 @ 6:19 pm by Mrs. Funnel Cake

Like many bees before me, one of the first things I started shopping for was The Dress. Naturally, I turned to the Internet to begin my search!

Long before I had an inkling what Weddingbee was, I typed “wedding dress” into Google, and my eye caught on this red dress by Maggie Sottero.

(Fiorenza by Maggie Sottero) Sadly discontinued now!

I was intrigued. So fiery. So hot. So unorthodox! As my first dress crush, I dreamt about this scarlet beauty and wondered how I could get my hands on her in Switzerland. A quick search revealed that you could order her from bestbridalprices.com, but unfortunately Maggie Sottero does not allow international orders. Rats.

Fascinated by the thought of an unconventional coloured dress, I searched for other red wedding dresses.

(Amara Royale by Maggie Sottero) Also discontinued now. Seems Maggie is doing away with red…

For a brief instant, I thought about how it would be fitting to wear a red dress to our wedding. I mean, we live together guys. Unmarried, against the wishes of our Catholic parents. We’re baaaad. By the time we will walk down the aisle we will already be married legally for some time. There’s no pretending I’m walking down that aisle a chaste woman. Red seems like the perfect colour for a “scarlet woman.”

Look at these girls wearing Fiorenza!

If you hadn’t noticed by now, most of those pretty brides above have dark hair. I realised that the red probably wouldn’t look great with my complexion anyway and part of what I love about Fiorenza is how well it goes with the women’s black hair. I’m a pale white brunette, so I don’t think I’d be achieving any of the Spanish beauty qualities I was daydreaming about. It wouldn’t be worth trying to buy internationally. I even looked to see if Fiorenza interested me in white…

It didn’t. (Via StillWhite)

Despite the fact that we wouldn’t work well together, I did continue to ogle my first crush for months. *Sigh*

What was your first dress crush? What are your feelings about red or colourful wedding dresses?

Am OBSESSED with that fourth one — so retro! So flirty! LOVE! But, even though we ALSO live together, flouting the Big Bad Church and my mom, I think I can’t pull off that color either - but, oh! Such pretty eye candy!

I LOVE red dresses! And it’s traditional in my religion (though not most of my family’s) What I’m trying to decide right now is whether to go with all red or white with lots of red details.

My first obsession was to find a pink wedding gown…but everything I wanted was overseas and I didn’t want to mess around with that. Then I thought about making my own…..nah! Then I happened to be searching a thrift shop because I’m collecting dessert size china plates in our wedding colors for our vintage themed wedding and I came across a beautiful vintage looking strapless white gown covered in pale pink embroidered flowers all over the top part and a sprinkling on flowers on the very full tulle skirt. I’m contemplating adding pink tulle underneath the first couple layers of tulle on the skirt. For $35 I couldn’t say no. I can always get another dress if this one doesn’t work out. ;)

I love colored gowns but didn’t want to get a lot of flack for actually buying one. I chose to do red heels instead and got enough comments about that! Geez, not EVERYTHING has to be white peeps!

I really like some of the pastel colors that are out now (Lazaro has a beautiful pink ball gown that I love, despite not really being a lover of the color pink) but I could never pull off a colored wedding dress (not to mention that my mother would have a heart attack - she couldn’t even stand a darker ivory that one of the first dresses I tried on was). I think it takes a really confident woman to go against the white dress tradition and I would feel just too self conscious.

Props to you though if you have that confidence, and I say if you want a color go for it. I have similar coloring to yours (at least what I can tell from your pics) and I always get a lot of compliments when I wear really striking reds. And as far as the international ordering goes - could you not have your mom order it in the states and ship it overseas to you?

I also love that 4th one! It could be a great dress just to have to wear..I am not sure where exactly but I am sure I could find a place.
I agree..red is great and awesome but its not for everyone. I am sure you will look awesome in whatever color you choose!

Oddly enough every picture of my dress on the internet is in red but it comes in white & ivory as well.

It wasn’t my dream dress though I was very much in love with Jasmine Couture T947… Every bridal store in my town that was supposed to have it had sold the sample gown just before (like days) my appointment.

I found a red dress by Mia Solano: M9841Z. I never thought about a red dress until I saw that one, and I couldn’t stop thinking about it! I didn’t even like the white version whatsoever. Then I started thinking about the fact that I don’t have a dark skin tone and that dark hair to even pull it off. But the dress is still BEAUTIFUL. Very powerful, strong, and rich. ::sigh::

Hey Sweetie, if you want to think of yourself as a scarlet, you are just about on the right track. Spanish……well just turn it a bit more, and think of Scarlet…….O’Hara!! With her Lily white skin!! This is how I see it! Your grown, you live with your future husband, you like RED or what ever color, more than likely you are paying for everything,……blow their minds and be bold and come on down the isle with your head held high in your beautiful RED dress. Good luck in your decision, I beleive you will make the right choice.

Wow. I love that tea length red one! I, too, wanted a red dress. I think it was Alexander McQueen? So fierce!

I love that short red one! Please tell me you are getting a red reception dress! That’s the only way this should end!

My first dress crush was also a Maggie… I didn’t think I could afford it on our small budget, but I stuck with my heart and my mom blessed me with a very generous gift! :)

I love the red dresses!

@Ms. Wolf: I’m going with red details! :) Pops of colour should be lovely.

@ChinDown: Wow, $35 is a great deal for a dress!

@xtatic1: haha yeah I bought red heels and when I told my Swiss friends I wanted coloured heels, you would have thought I killed someone. They thought it was sooo weird to not have white.

@lisaelanna: Now that you mention it, actually do get a lot of compliments for wearing red as well, but then I’d want to dye my hair black for the dress. :) But this ship has sailed… I just found how when I wrote this that no one is selling Fiorenza anymore. :-(

@mrsbowieii: I’m actually fascinated by the white mirrors of the red dresses. The red dresses by Maggie Sottero were usually advertised in red mainly and you had to search to see a white version if there were even any pictures. I actually feel like maybe these white dresses are more uncommon than a lot of other things out there.

@mrsbowieii: Ugh, no samples!? What did you do?

@weddingstars2012: yeah, sometimes the elements of the dress just look sooo different on red! Are you rocking the red?

@Miss Magic: I do have yet to think of a RD dress!

@Miss Pony: Hahaha, ahh I think for the price of gowns I will be soaking up my wedding dress as long as possible. Don’t think I could convince my mum otherwise!

@jaebabe: Aw, great dress crush story! So glad it worked out. :)

@jamie: Yay crush twins. Lol.

@lisamarieloves: Ohhh I’ve seen that one and I was really drooling over it too! So lovely and soft and mm… polka dotty.

One of my friends recently got married and wore a red dress–wow! I wore a green one for our reception (I felt an actual dress would be too formal for a December courthouse wedding). LOVE colored dresses.

Wow what a statement piece! The FI made it clear that he would not find it amusing should I turn up in a red (or other bold coloured) dress. He definitely wants a very traditional day. However, I do think that lots of wedding dresses tend to look very much “the same”, and so colour would be a brilliant way to stand out, and have a more unique dress. I’m defiantly not brave enough though! I always thought I wanted a white dress, but yeiks - I wasn’t expecting them to be *that* white! As with the red dresses, I guess you need to have the right complexion / colouring.
My first dress crush was a Justin Alexander, well to be honest the majority of his range! Unfortunately they were a bit out of budget, but mine is a very similar style at a snip of the price, so I’m a happy bride!
