Miss Sweet Cream's Picture
Miss Sweet Cream, Philadelphia Age and Occupation: 26, Public Relations Account Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Outside Sales Engagement Date: July 4, 2010 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church / Rosebank Winery About Me: Born in the ‘burbs of Philly, it took some time living in the Big Apple to realize that I’m a girl who likes her roots. That’s why the mister and I bought a 1950s house on a charming street not too far from our childhood stompin’ grounds. This could also be the reason why our hometown is the scene where we are planning our super sweet, totally charming, BBQ-for-supper wedding that I never knew I always wanted. I DIE over DIY projects and live for vintage, heartfelt inspiration. I obsess over all things mid-century (from forks to furniture). Love is… cartoons and flea markets, and I am known to whip up a mean banana cream pie. I met the Mr. in grade school and after that boy took me for a spin on the handle bars of his BMX, I knew that things would never be the same again. Besides lovin’ my Mr., I also love to plan, sew and create, and that’s just what I’m doing as I navigate through the details, creating a laid-back day that oozes charm; one that will go down in (at least our) history as the Best. Day. Of all time.
About Miss Sweet Cream

The Hunt Begins

June 6th, 2011 @ 5:05 pm by Miss Sweet Cream

After we got engaged and got our chance to celebrate with friends and family—and reenact bits of the engagement to the shrieks of joy of excited girlfriends (“He literally pulled up onto the lawn of the mansion where—there was a full picnic waiting for us…”), it was time to try to figure out the big things about our wedding.

We both love the fall, so we decided on having it in either September or October. We both wanted something that felt like a great big party—not too fancy, something more laid-back. That’s when the hunt began to find the perfect venue. With dreamy inspiration like this…

The task itself took a lot more digging than I thought.

Being a self-proclaimed Google queen, I looked and looked at places throughout the city and places out in the country. Nothing really seemed “us”—at least not anything in our budget. With thoughts of “rural” and “old-fashioned” stuck in our heads, we were thinking about going two hours from our hometown in farm country, and eventually we found something that we thought could be doable. Only after venturing out to a venue walk-though one morning, I—who promised that I would be the complete opposite of a bridezilla—broke down in tears since it wasn’t what we saw on the website at all.

The tears eventually subsided when Mama Sweet Cream’s friend’s daughter suggested a winery, moments—seriously—away from our house (and the Catholic church where we are making it official).

A winery? I hadn’t really thought of that since all of the wineries I had been to in Bucks County, although gorgeous, just weren’t (in my mind) what we were looking for. But this one we had never been to. She assured her mom to assure Mama Sweet Cream to assure me that it might be just what we wanted. So we went. And we jumped up and down—at least I did. And then we got butterflies and clinked glasses of wine together knowing that this was it.

It was perfect. We can decorate how we want? Check. Vintage, “old-fashioned” feel? Check. Pick our own caterer? Double check.

We decided to take a trip back with FMIL and the crew, and that day Mr. Sweet Cream and I signed on the dotted line.

So that was it. Mr. Sweet Cream is thrilled that he only had to go to two venues before we decided. I’d love to go visit more and get special treatment and ooh and ahh over things that our wedding can be. But we’re people who know what we want. We’re super excited that it’s close to us, because now we can get married in our church and get pictures taken in our new neighborhood, which has all of the historic touches that we love.

We get to decorate however we want—and come in the evening before to do it if we’d like. We can pick our own caterer and supply our own alcohol, with the exception of the wine—which I might add is A-OK with us. An added bonus: sheep. Enough said. I can just image Vogue-esque pictures with sheep. Call me crazy.

How did you find your venue? Did you have something in mind before the search even began? How many venues did you visit before you found the one? Did you stumble across something by sheer luck (word of mouth) like I did?

Your venue looks amazing! It makes me think of the English countryside! We found our venue by accident really. When my man proposed to me we were on a whale-watching tour with my folks, and along the way we stopped the boat at a small private dock to pick up some extra passengers. I thought the dock was really cute, along with the tiny cove is was in, and the name stuck with me: “secret cove”. Anyway….fast forward a few months and I’m searching furiously online for something that fits us, and in my results I see it again “secret cove”. I clicked on the link out of curiosity more than anything, but was amazed when I did. It was this little resort built right into the hillside overlooking the ocean, with suites on stilts so you sleep in the tree-line and a boardwalk connecting them all and heading back to the lodge-style main building. It was like something out of a story book! We instantly fell in love with the picturesque landscape and the cozy yet classy feel of the resort, and put our deposit down with 2 years left until we say our vows! We got really lucky too…it was half the price of the other place we were considering!

Love it! We are getting married at a winery too. But it has a rustic, Italian contry-side vibe to it. Although we don’t have sheep. :)

@mak418 thanks! I think that the guy at the venue thought I was a little crazy when I said… “wait! stop. you have sheep?!?”

Omg! I love your venue. This gives me hope b/c my fiance and I are looking for a similar venue. Something we can decorate ourselves, bring in our own caterer and provide our own liquor. I love the twinkle lights, candles, and lanterns vibe going on. Ohhhhh I hope I can find mine soon. We plan to get married May 2012. If there are any Michigan brides out there, please provide recommendations!!!

That’s beautiful! I wanted to look some wineries, in addition to beach venues, but we actually ended up going with a venue in a location I was least expecting. It’s an all inclusive venue, where we can bring our own alcohol and add to the decorations. The fact that they had one Saturday left for July 2012 made us quickly sign a contract, only because I’m going back to school and they’ll make the whole thing easier. The place does also have a very romantic feel with lots of candles and lighting at night so I’m exciting. My fiance loved it the first time we saw it.

@stephanie - keep looking…and tell EVERYONE you know you are looking for something…ideas creep up in the least expect places.

@weddingstars2012 decorations were a must for us… think wreaths, bunting, etc. etc…. I called so many places that just said no. And we did the same thing too! Octobers were scares and that was practically 1year 1/3 on top of things. I’m sure yours will be amazing… it sounds it!!

@Mrs.Elephant - I’m hoping it will be all I dream of!

@Miss Pony - I know!!! Right?

@MrsBowieii. Thanks! yes. that was number one… we had to sacrifice some good places (at least they looked a that way on the internet) b/c of what I had in my pretty little head :/ I know it will be amazing though…whatever it turns out to be.

The first picture with all the strings of lights was in my inspiration folder before we found our venue… a historic barn that has lights all around it, although not as many as I’d like. Your venue looks awesome.

Venue was one of the most important things for me!! I couldn’t afford what I would really love (think glamorous hotel with bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean). I considered semi-destination wedding for a split second, visited three local options and picked the third place. It is actually perfect!

I looked at this venue too! I loved it because it looks so much like my grandfather’s farm in Berks County, but alas, FI was not digging the winery! Ah, well. I can’t wait to see the inside of it (we never made it to the visiting stage)!

@LisaMarieLoves - Budgets suck so bad!! But I’m glad that you also found something you love within yours too!

@TMaherne - where are you getting married? I was looking for a farm, but I could find nothing within a 20 minute drive from us… well none that would let us have a wedding there or could fit our growing list

@Balloons - i KNOW. I really think that the winery owner thinks I am crazy b/c while we were there I kept telling Mr. Sweets how excited I was about the sheep.

@Lo & @SnowCone - I am desperately trying to figure out a way to do string lights with where the outlets are!!!
