Bend to the Trend

June 6th, 2011 @ 10:18 am by Mrs. High Wire

If you are anything like me, you tend to shy away from the trendiest things because you just know, in a few years, they will look totally dated and out of style. Plus, hyper-fixating on every trend as it comes along doesn’t give you a chance to establish your own timeless, confident style. Also, keeping up with the trends is expensive and exhausting!

This topic can apply not only to your everyday wardrobe, but your wedding style as well.

I think the key is to find a balance of mixing timeless staples with a few trends thrown in for good measure. But those trends should only serve to enhance your wedding (or wardrobe).

Trendy vs. Being Original

I’ll just say this quickly: the only people who know about what’s popular in the wedding world are brides and wedding professionals. Lucky for you, the large majority of your guests are neither of those and won’t have even heard of any of the trendy elements you do decide to include. You get bonus points for being creative and original even though you may have some of the most popular wedding items around. Nice, huh?

Below are some of the hyper-trendy elements of weddings these days, but as anyone who is familiar with trends knows, some of these are already considered out of date! It’s hard to keep up, I know.

The Candy Buffet

Why we’re having it:

1. The venue offered to include it in our package free of charge (score!).

2. It will act as both our wedding favors (we’ll provide to-go boxes) and an addition to dessert.

3. It will provide entertainment to the children in attendance. (Bored children is when the madness ensues.)

Vintage Decor

Why we’re having it:

1. It’s fun to find family treasures and cute antique pieces for the big day with family and friends.

2. It’s easy to find affordable (or free) knick-knacks almost anywhere.

3. There’s lots of opportunity to be creative and inject meaning into the wedding.

Photo Booth

Why we’re having it:

1. It will act as a fun alternate activity during the reception for our guests if the buffet line is too long or they don’t like to dance.

2. It was offered in our photography package, which was a huge selling point for me since I really wanted to include this.

3. We get to dress up and play with silly props!

Are you including any trendy wedding elements? Do you vehemently follow fashion trends in regards to your wardrobe?

We are having the candy/dessert buffet and photobooth at our wedding too! The buffet will be a very small thing with family made desserts and a small selection of candy. My parents are getting us the photobooth and we are using those photos as favors so it serves a dual purpose! Even if they are trendy and may be outdated now or soon, they are things your guests will remember - and I’m super excited about them!!

Oh - and as far as fashion - I anticipated buying a more modern, in trend gown and I ended up with a very classic style gown and veil. I think you can very easily balance the trendy and classic elements in order to avoid a “kitchy” kind of event!

I am creating a candy buffet and using a photobooth. The candy buffet will serve as our favors. Also, my fiance and I are both VERY big candy lovers, so this seemed perfect right from the beginning. Everyone knows us for our love of sweets. The photobooth we’re using in place of a normal guest book. Not only will the photobooth add fun to the wedding and keep people entertained so that I don’t have to, but we will have a scrapbook with glue and pens next to the photobooth where guests can attach a picture and write us a nice note. I like this more than a traditional guest book. Sadly one trend I am upset we’re using is peacock. They’re my favorite animal so of course I am incorporating them into my wedding. I only found out AFTER I started planning my wedding that this is a popular theme. However, we’re incorporating Christmas as well, so at least I know that my peacock theme will differ from everyone else’s.

hmmmm…. trendy for us would be having our take on a candy buffet (yeah, it’s not gonna be the typical jar-type buffet, hehehehe), large guest list, and that’s probably it. oh, and a theme. even if our theme isn’t the typical theme, lol

I think our wedding is as far from traditional as it gets! LOL! We’re having some typical wedding traditions (bouquet and garter toss, favors, etc) but for the most part, it’s not gonna be your typical wedding!

We’re having a photobooth in lieu of a guest book, pie instead of cake, I’m wearing an indie designer dress, a taco truck, succulent bouquets, we have a music video director shooting our video, the groomsmen are in American Apparel… I’m learning to just laugh at myself about it because our wedding isn’t just trendy - it’s totally hipsterville!

But you know, it’s us and that’s what’s important.

I’m having all those same trends! Photobooths and candy buffets are just too fun and I can’t escape some antiques when my parents have collected and sold them my whole life.

Call me uncool, but I don’t think we really incorporated very many trends. I just picked stuff I liked and called it a day! :)

We are using vintage decor, we are doing a cocktail party without assigned seating, we are having a destination/ weekend wedding, and we have a photo booth. Our rehearsal dinner has been replaced by a double decker bus tour and we most definitely having an after party. All these things seem strange to my more traditional-minded guests.

We’re also partaking in all of the above current trends! I’ve thought about whether or not I’ll regret these decisions later…but for the same reasons you listed, I really don’t think they will. I think I’d still love to have the ideas of a candy buffet and photobooth 20 years down the road :)

I am having vintage decor and hopefully a photo booth! There’s a reason they are trends - they are awesome!

I do not like to follow trends… however, I am having a photobooth. I think it is a genious idea!!

I HOPE that my wedding will come off as fun and unique. I want people to be surprised… but the Giant is in a three piece suit, the groomsmen are in vest and pants. But he’s wearing cowboy boots. We’re doing a photobooth (sending people the photo in their thank you cards). And succulent centerpieces. A cake buffet… but also a hashbrown buffet…

I feel like we’re doing the trendy stuff but with a bit of a twist.

I love love love the idea of having a dessert/candy buffet. SO isn’t a huge sweets person and let’s face it - a large cake usually goes to waste. I just love the idea that it give the guests more options (cheesecake, cupcakes, cookies, candy - yes please.) I can’t imagine I would regret that “trend” years later.

the good news about wedding trends is that 99% of wedding guests don’t stalk blogs, so even if something is trendy in wedding world, it’s still fresh and new in guest world, and you look like a genius!!

Ah yes, I am jumping on the milk glass bandwagon along with the photobooth one. My big worry is that no one will use the photobooth though!
