Miss Sweet Cream's Picture
Miss Sweet Cream, Philadelphia Age and Occupation: 26, Public Relations Account Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Outside Sales Engagement Date: July 4, 2010 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church / Rosebank Winery About Me: Born in the ‘burbs of Philly, it took some time living in the Big Apple to realize that I’m a girl who likes her roots. That’s why the mister and I bought a 1950s house on a charming street not too far from our childhood stompin’ grounds. This could also be the reason why our hometown is the scene where we are planning our super sweet, totally charming, BBQ-for-supper wedding that I never knew I always wanted. I DIE over DIY projects and live for vintage, heartfelt inspiration. I obsess over all things mid-century (from forks to furniture). Love is… cartoons and flea markets, and I am known to whip up a mean banana cream pie. I met the Mr. in grade school and after that boy took me for a spin on the handle bars of his BMX, I knew that things would never be the same again. Besides lovin’ my Mr., I also love to plan, sew and create, and that’s just what I’m doing as I navigate through the details, creating a laid-back day that oozes charm; one that will go down in (at least our) history as the Best. Day. Of all time.
About Miss Sweet Cream

Besides crafting and sewing—and loving Mr. Sweet Cream—my next favorite thing has to be food. I’m not talking about shoving some Doritos down my face (although the Spicy Nacho are my fave) or a box of mac & cheese. (Although I may not admit it to some, mac & cheese has gotten me out of a jam after cooking a meal too exotic for Mr. Sweet’s palate.)

I love reading cookbooks, picturing the ingredients simmering together and the possible delishness that could be tasted. I love watching old episodes of Julia Child’s show on the Cooking Channel. And I LOVE looking at the thoughtfulness of delish arrangements of food that compliment each other like instruments in a symphony. So that especially makes me prone to sigh over wedding menus.

I was definitely excited to get some trendy food goodness woven into the wedding.

Think food-truck fun! (Mrs. Earrings makes it look like such a good choice!)

And a truck…that serves ice cream! We all scream for ice cream!

Think mini, teeny-tiny versions of favorite foods. (Just look at these adorable small Pop-Tarts on sticks!)

Think comfort food. Grilled cheese and tomato soup. Burgers. Mac & cheese. Yes, please!

With all of these thoughts spinning in my bridal brain, I connected with an uber-trendy caterer in the city (who I was hoping with all my might could pull off something within our budget). She mentioned all of these ideas…but then she mentioned three little letters that were like magical bells…

B…B…Q…

I’m not talking about throwing another shrimp on the barbie or even favorites at a Fourth of July picnic. I’m talkin’ slow-roasted pork, cornbread…and all the fixins’. I’ve seen other bees do it—so I know that it’s not a totally new idea—but some of the eye candy at some BBQ bees’ weddings truly makes me wish I could jump into the pictures. Just take a look at the wedding of Mrs. Mary Jane and Mrs. Cola’s rehearsal dinner!

My mouth was watering as I slowly described to Mr. Sweet Cream all that could come with our very cool BBQ package from the uber-trendy caterer. Then—as I am sure that some of you bees do—I whispered what came last…the bottom line.

Of course, Mr. Sweet Cream thought that triple-digit number per guest was a little insane—especially for BBQ. And while I could feel myself beginning to feel all sad that something so amazing was crossed off the list of possibilities…he surprised me with three little words that were also like magical bells…

Sweet. Lucy’s. BBQ.

Who knew future hubbies could come up with such amazing ideas? Just. like. that.

We’ve been to Sweet Lucy’s so many times. The place is rated the #1 BBQ joint in the city, and I seriously think that their BBQ sauce could make a man weak in his knees. And it turns out that they DO in fact cater…so much so that they only had two Saturdays left in October.

Since we’d had the immense pleasure of having Sweet Lucy’s BBQ sauce grace our lips before, we said “Book us, please!!! Pretty please!!”

The options include everything from paper plates to renting china…so we have lots of choices. And it’s very funny that even the most traditional guests get so excited after hearing what we’ll be serving. (We so wanted it to be a surprise for our nearest and dearest—but of course we couldn’t keep our mouths shut about that one.)

Of course we took the fam there to do an official “taste test,” even though we knew exaaactly what it tastes like (heaven). A smoked beef tenderloin, baby back ribs, rotisserie chicken, pulled pork, and smoked kielbasa kind of dream land.

Mr. Sweets and me after battling it out for our favorite menu item at Sweet Lucy’s…

Mr. Sweets looks all droopy eyed because it was an all-you-can-eat buffet—so he did just that! Nap time!

So that is how our menu came to be. I kinda wish we’d gotten to taste test our way around town. That is what I thought would happen. But when Sweet Lucy calls (with only two Saturdays in your choice wedding month left), you can’t turn your back…can you??

How did you decide on your menu? Is there any particular item that you and your SO are so excited about? Are you doing something completely out of the ordinary—like street vendors—or something crazier?

Sounds delicious! I have never been to a BBQ wedding but I am keeping my fingers crossed that someone I know will decide to go this route (and then invite me)!

And now I am sooooo hungry for lunch.

OMG! That’s kinda what happened to us! We did a BBQ wedding and it was awesome. People loved it, the food was amazing, and it just made everything more fun. But yea, DH was the one who suggested the BBQ place to me–it hadn’t even occurred to me to think of the one spot we loved to go, whose owners were SO nice. I’m so glad we ended up with them!!

YAY for mouthwatering BBQ! We are doing our own BBQ pork and then having the rest catered in. And I still want to do an ice cream bar with lots of topping options, but not sure how that is going to work out yet.

My cousin had her wedding catered by a BBQ restaurant and it was awesome. It was just perfect for her casual, rustic wedding.

I’ve thought about doing something offbeat like food trucks for my wedding, but unfortunately I think our guest list is too big to make that kind of thing practical. I think the best bet for the sake of my sanity is to just find a venue that’s big enough and affordable enough and hope their catering is tasty.

Get down with the BBQ! We were this close to doing the same (Baby Blue’s in LA0 but in the end taco truck was just cheaper and almost as exciting.

Love the post title! And we are doing BBQ as well, it just fits with our laid back, Colorado vibe. Can’t wait to see yours come to life!

I always wonder what the vegetarian options would be for a BBQ. Roasted veggies? Though you might not have to worry about it depending on your guest list.

Well, for our BBQ, we’re gonna have macaroni and cheese and something else, along with salad. :-) And one of my MOHs is a vegetarian, so we definitely had to think about it.

I love all other BBQ brides. I am equally excited for pulled pork & mac & cheese!!!

@haelmai & @Ms. Wolf. I know, I know… we the opposite of vegetarians so at first this was the last thing on our mind… we are actually having caesar salad & roasted veggies too, just for good measure. As far as we know, there is only one vegetarian on the list & we know she will love the roasted veggies & mac & cheese. :) I wish I could have the discipline of a vegetarian… but I just can’t with the words “pulled” and “pork” in the sentence!! :)
