Before wedding blogs took over my free time, I was a daily reader of Design*Sponge. It was there, three years ago, prior to engagement and even marriage talks, that I found our cake-topper inspiration:

Not to seem crazy, I bookmarked Jennifer’s site and tucked the images away on my computer for when the time would come. Fast forward a little over a year, and I was finally able to show the mister what I was so giddy about. There was one small problem: the very large price tag for something handmade.
I wasn’t willing to spend that kind of money on shoes (although I came close), let alone on something I thought I could make.
After several pilgrimages to Michaels and many revisions, we ended up with this:

Their eyes and noses are a little more cartoony, and their bodies are rounder and fuller. I didn’t use antique beads or millinery supplies, and I’m still on the fence about the whiskers. It’s not perfect but that’s OK. It was made with love, and that’s all you really need; a steady hand and patience couldn’t hurt either.
Did you attempt your own DIY version of something in order to save money?
