About Mrs. Macarons

After purchasing the oh so lovely and popular striped straws for our bar, the standard cocktail stirrers just wouldn’t do.

At first I wanted to make these fluffy tissue-paper stirrers but figured they’d be pretty time consuming (much like the foofers), and I already had a laundry list of DIY projects I wanted to complete.

Instead I joined the flag bandwagon.

You’ll need the following supplies:

  • Wooden stirrers in two different sizes (The longer ones came from a certain coffee-shop chain; the shorter ones I purchased from Walmart.)
  • Glue stick(s), wrinkle-free variety
  • Paper, preferably on the slightly thicker side (I used 80# metallic text from Paper and More.)
  • X-Acto knife and ruler or paper cutter (I prefer the former.)
  • The best scissors ever

After a few tests on plain paper, I determined the size I wanted the flags and text to be. At 3.5” x 0.4125” I was able to fit 40 to a page. You can’t really tell from the picture, but I included dashed trim lines at the ends.

Once the strips were cut out, I applied glue to the back and folded the strip onto itself. I made sure I lined up the ends before firmly pushing them together. Slide the flag over the stirrer and press together, and you’ll end up with this:

To speed up the process I used small binder clips to apply pressure while they dried. Cut the notches and you’re done!

After several lunch breaks I had 100 long and 75 short:

This was one of the easiest and least expensive projects so far. I had all the supplies on hand with the exception of the stirrers. For less than five dollars and a little of your time, I think it’s a fun detail to include.

What’s the easiest DIY project you’ve taken on?

Any chance you have the template that you could share? These are so cute.
If you have any leftover purple paper, I might be interested in purchasing it from you. My colors are purple & grey.

Thanks,
Venessa

Our wedding is in December, so we’ll have synthetic snow for our guests to throw at us! The girl who runs our venue told us that she’d had lots of couples throw Rice Krispies because in pictures, it looks just like rice!

So so so CUTE! I came across your old blog not long ago while looking for drink stirrer inspiration - these totally stood out to me among the rest. Love these and I just may have to borrow some inspiration ;)

I wish this post had emphasized exactly how difficult and cost ineffective these are. Because then I wouldn’t be compelled to swipe the idea. Thanks, Miss Mac, thanks a lot.

You list an X-acto knife AND scissors for the project. What did you use each for?

And yes, a template would be GRAND!

Thanks!

@SeattleMolly: Sorry for the delay, I used the x-acto and ruler to cut the strips out and the scissors were for the notches at the end. You could cut them out with the blade, but I found scissors were much easier.
