Mrs. Funnel Cake's Picture
Mrs. Funnel Cake, Zürich, Switzerland/Columbus, Ohio Age and Occupation: 24, Visual Communication Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Application Engineer Engagement Date: May 30, 2010 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Catholic church followed by a botanical conservatory About Me: I'm an American designer who moved to Switzerland for love after a fairytale beginning at the top of the Eiffel Tower. I love travel, photography, museums, learning German so I can speak with my mother-in-law, cooking (eating), cuddling, and I'm not afraid to try something new even if it terrifies me. My Swiss/Brazilian man and I are both down to earth people planning a traditional Catholic wedding in my hometown with some quirky cultural exceptions to reflect our different backgrounds. We look forward to celebrating with friends and family from all over the world in a classic, sophisticated fusion of heritage and love.
About Mrs. Funnel Cake

Shortly after Mr. Funnel Cake proposed, I was about halfway through his delectable homemade pineapple-coconut-Malibu ice cream when we decided the main logistics of getting married.

One thing was clear: With the clock ticking on my residence permit, it was imperative that we sorted a civil union immediately. I would have gotten married the next week if it were possible, but there happens to be a lot of red tape involved with marrying an American in Switzerland. (Sticky, yucky, irritating red tape that deserves it’s own post later.)

Is there one of those for me? (Via the European Union Times)

When he originally brought up Plan Z over a year earlier, Mr. Funnel Cake and I had discussed how it would make sense to do a civil union first and marry in the church when we were really ready to be married.

We still felt this was a good plan considering that we needed to get married legally ASAP in the next couple months, but at this point in our relationship we were also ready to begin planning our religious union.

Considering that we would need to do the civil union in Switzerland because of the time constraints, we agreed that it was fair to have the church wedding in my hometown in Ohio.

I happen to have eight siblings, some of whom have wives and children, and it was impossible to expect all fourteen people to fly to Zürich to attend our wedding.

SIL Funnel Cake is missing here, but you get the picture. We are a big bunch!

Mr. Funnel Cake has just one brother and his parents, so for us, it made sense to hold the wedding in Columbus so that all of our immediate family (parents and siblings) could attend. This was really important to us. Mr. Funnel Cake doesn’t actually have big extended family in Switzerland anyway, so it was kind of a no-brainer.

We hashed out a rough plan that we would get married legally that summer in 2010 in Zürich and then give ourselves an “engagement period” while we planned a 2011 wedding in Columbus. With this plan in mind, it was time to start telling people the good news…

How did you decide where and when to have your wedding?

What a beautiful family! I’m an only child and Mr. HW is only 1 of 2, so we didn’t have to work out the same kinds of logistics as you regarding family.

As for picking our date, I wanted it to be outside, and I wanted it to be warm (so that eliminated spring and winter b/c it would be too cold for me and summer b/c it would be too hot).

What a big immediate family! I kinda always wished I had more than just one brother.

We had a similar issue…he’s in Northern Ireland and I’m in America! We’re in the process of obtaining a fiance visa for me, so we’ve decided on our first wedding & reception to be in Belfast, and in the next year or two we’ll have another one around Baltimore so my American friends & family who can’t afford the trip can still enjoy our wedding!

When was decided as the anniversary of the day we met (and it’s within my fiance visa time limit!)

Oh wow. You can totally see the family resemblance! What do you think? Everyone says that about me and my three siblings but I personally think my brothers look completely different than me and my sister. Funny what you think when you know someone’s face so well….

SO and I haven’t discussed this part yet, but there are many options (PA where he grew up, or the other side of PA where we met in college, NY where I grew up, CT where we went to grad. school, CO where we are going to be moving, destination wedding maybe? So many choices)

We both have lots of family living overseas but our closest are pretty much in the same general area so it was an easy choice.

Just wanted to add how much I despise that ad. I love Switzerland and I have lived there but the xenophobia is really out of control sometimes.

Our date centered around the idea of spring break for our kids (both of whom will be in school, UGH!!!). But, that would’ve put it in March and I’m not a March person (cold, windy, rainy, often snowy). Sooooo, we went with the weekend AFTER Easter! So, the kids will be getting their spring/Easter break and THEN a couple more days out of school for our wedding and probably honeymoon! The kids will love us, the school will hate us ;)

@Miss High Wire: Same reasons as us! Ohio weather is so finicky anywhere but autumn is a risky bet.

@hana.schmitt: Aww, anniversary wedding day. What a good choice!

@Ms. Martian: someone noticed the terribly racist ad! I see them on a sometimes daily basis here depending on what issues are up for vote. It’s definitely a hot topic in these parts. Stupid xenophobia. :(

@Miss Pony: ohhh don’t worry I do feel kinda guilty our big wedding that all the friends are going to is really hard for the Brazilians (who need tourist visas) and the Swiss to make it to. :(

Ohio definitely makes sense! We decided we wanted a wedding outside of Calgary and somehow or other we both came up with Vancouver, just one province over. I have some cousins, an aunt and my grandmother there, but otherwise everyone else has to travel in. Oh well!
