Miss Sweet Cream's Picture
Miss Sweet Cream, Philadelphia Age and Occupation: 26, Public Relations Account Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Outside Sales Engagement Date: July 4, 2010 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church / Rosebank Winery About Me: Born in the ‘burbs of Philly, it took some time living in the Big Apple to realize that I’m a girl who likes her roots. That’s why the mister and I bought a 1950s house on a charming street not too far from our childhood stompin’ grounds. This could also be the reason why our hometown is the scene where we are planning our super sweet, totally charming, BBQ-for-supper wedding that I never knew I always wanted. I DIE over DIY projects and live for vintage, heartfelt inspiration. I obsess over all things mid-century (from forks to furniture). Love is… cartoons and flea markets, and I am known to whip up a mean banana cream pie. I met the Mr. in grade school and after that boy took me for a spin on the handle bars of his BMX, I knew that things would never be the same again. Besides lovin’ my Mr., I also love to plan, sew and create, and that’s just what I’m doing as I navigate through the details, creating a laid-back day that oozes charm; one that will go down in (at least our) history as the Best. Day. Of all time.
About Miss Sweet Cream

We planned for an October wedding. I knew—although not firsthand—how quickly time would fly. Mr. Sweet Cream on the other hand thought that we had all of the time in the world…until, that is, it came to booking both our dream vendors—our caterer we were lusting after and our church—in the fall. I wish I had a picture of his face when the person at the venue told us the dates left in October. And then the caterer told us the same thing. Luckily we snatched up that date before it was taken by another couple with similar dreams.

Once these big things were signed and sealed we—or I—started to think about the big picture. I had so many ideas, and ultimately I knew that they would eventually have to be edited. I think that I was truly meant to have a small, intimate wedding with the details that paraded through my imagination.

Look at how gorgeous these mismatched, kitschy, vintage place settings look. I certainly could collect 130+ plates, cups, wine glasses, dessert plates, and utensils in over a year! I swear!

I also just knew that it would be simply charming to have our favorite family recipes for desserts, such as Gmom Sweet Cream’s famous Texas sheet cake, Aunt Sweet Cream’s to-die-for cheesecake, and Mr. Sweet’s grandmom’s pies. Food has a way of bringing back family memories, and this would honor those truly dear to us while serving something that is truly…well…a part of our family background.

The caterer wouldn’t allow this with their servers handing out the sweets. We could hire another catering staff and do this—but then I guess they wouldn’t know the food…the oh-so-good food. So I folded that hand.

I also wanted to have some light games for sometime just before the clock just ticks to cocktail hour. But I honestly just don’t know if it could work with our crowded guest list.

Where I originally pictured a party—the party of our lives, as a matter of fact—I pictured it much smaller. But when two become one, that means double the aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. I would hate for anyone who deserves a seat to get cut from our list…because we want everyone who the people we love want there to be part of our big day.

I got over the idea of mismatched vintage plates for ones all in the same color, and we’re having a variety of cakes from a baker in lieu of our grandmothers’ goodies. But I am still thrilled about being able to share our day with everyone we love. And that’s what it’s all about.

Did you have to edit some ideas you swooned over due to logistics, whether it was cost, count, or something different?

We had a similar desire for the vintagey china but agreed that this was a lofty task to try and collect so many pieces! Our compromise is to find vintage serving dishes, and hopefully either cups & saucers and/or desert plates. ~Its a good nod to the aesthetics we want overall.

Also, gave up on trying to convince everyone a three-hour drive to my dream venue with the most perfect, old willow tree as our backdrop would be reasonable (wouldn’t it?!!) and found a quaint bed & breakfast farm with more trees and gardens than I could have hoped for and half the cost!!

It makes me giddy to say that I am doing all of that. That was my vision-everything you described down to a fall wedding. I had thought like you did that we couldn’t do all of that so we had almost settled on a venue we didn’t like with a caterer that frowned at my ideas.
My fiance said it didn’t feel right so we dropped everything and signed up with a B&B with a barn. She said we could do whatever wanted so we hired a bbq caterer and I started collecting my plates! I have 150 gorgeous mismatched vintage and china dinner and dessert plates that I collected at estate sales. My family members are bringing pies and such as well. I am comprimising with the venues chairs though, they are such an eyesore-but everything else is so wonderful that I can get over it. We’re going to have haybales for the ceremony so I’ll only wince when I walk in the barn for dinner :-) I’m sorry you had to let go of some of your ideas. Are there any ones that you kept that you’re very happy about?

Vintage plates are currently my nightmare, be glad you scrapped that plan.

I am also doing mixed china (for 200!) and what I have discovered is that getting them in sets is the easiest way to get all of the pieces you need. It also has the bonus of being one of the cheapest methods. Craigslist has become a good friend of mine too, along with starting a relationship with a local antique dealer. She was so excited when I told her what I wanted to do, she was more than happy to work with me and my budget!

@stephbonthego that willow tree sounds amazing!! But I’m sure that your pick is just as good - if not better!! That’s a great idea about the serving pieces! Way to tie it in in some way!

@NippyBeatle - that is so awesome that you are doing it AND that your fiance knew things were right & wanted you to have your dream! I know that it can be done — but with my super long list of ideas, DIY projects and things to get done, I had to scratch some things…I figure that editing is just part of the process. I’m very, very jealous!! But there is still a whole ton upon ton of things I’m loving & thrilled about… especially that its all coming together now! And I’ve managed to figure out a way to incorporate cherished family recipes into other wedding festivities! Your wedding sounds like it will be a dream!! :)

@MissPony - I will send my vintage-plate-finding-joo-joo your way and know that you will find each and every one in time & your guests — and you — will love it!

With our ginormous (275+) guest list, I had to forgo a lot of luscious details…but you’re so right, in the end, it’s about bringing two families together and celebrating with those two families that counts. You’re going to have a gorgeous wedding, Sweet Cream! I can tell you have excellent taste :)

Thanks, Seal! At the end of the day — that is so true!! I could never get upset about having two different shades of yellow or tables perhaps being a snug bit closer together knowing that I’m marrying my one & only and everyone is there to celebrate it!

PS - That IS a ginormous guest list!! ;) I’m sure that it will be a celebration to go down in the books!

I love mismatched china. But for 300 people it would be ridiculous! It took me a long time to let it go though :(.

I really wanted a lobster bake rehearsal dinner and to invite all of our guests to it, we couldn’t afford it because the guest list was so big, but I don’t look back and regret not doing it because I was so happy to have all the people that mattered there on the day that really mattered. You definitely have the right idea about that! :)

I definitely have some bittersweet rejected ideas. I’m really hoping that once the wedding comes and goes, they’ll be distant memories :)

I really love the vintage plate look, and considered it, but yes - too many plates to collect, logistics to worry about.
