Mrs. Jaguar's Picture
Mrs. Jaguar, Sydney Age and Occupation: 27, Primary School Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, IT Consultant Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2011 Venue: Curzon Hall About Me: I'm an Australian girl who is a self-proclaimed nerd, loves all things stationery and would be lost without books, music and the internet. Mr. Jaguar and I have been together for the past eight years and he finally popped the question last August. Hurrah! We currently live in Sydney, Australia with our adorable cat who thinks he's a person. We're a couple who likes to multi-task: we've been planning a wedding abroad, a permanent move from London to Sydney, and preparing to build our own home all at the same time. Travelling makes me giddy...as does Mr. Jaguar, of course!
About Mrs. Jaguar

Identity Oddity

June 8th, 2011 @ 2:22 pm by Mrs. Jaguar

Today was my last day at work before the wedding.

My colleagues spoiled me with two beautiful bath towels from our gift registry. I was treated to a lovely speech from my principal and lots of well wishes. There were cards from parents, messages from kids (in my class, and from around the school) and there was just a generally nice vibe floating around all day.

This afternoon I was finishing up the day with my Year 1/2 class and they were asking a whole lot of questions about the wedding—and I was explaining to them that this would be my last day teaching as “Miss Jaguar.” They were a bit thrown by that, but a few caught on and asked what I would be coming back as. So, I told them. I’ll be coming back as “Mrs. Jaguar.”

That’s when it hit me. All the dress fittings and the last minute tasks and the deadlines—they’ve just become part of our everyday lives.

But saying it out loud, saying my new name and my new identity out loud (and having 25 kids trying it on for size, too)—that was it.

We’re getting married. We’re going to be sharing a surname. We’re going to be starting a family, our own family.

For now, work is over. I’m off for two weeks, until we’re back from our stint in Vanuatu for the honeymoon. It’s going to be strange getting used to my new identity, but I think hearing my kidlets calling me by it every single day when I return will help make the transition a little easier.

How long did it take you to get used to your new name?

Hmm…about 4 months. And now I think it is weird hearing my old maiden name! But I was full on ready to embrace my new name after growing up with a “famous” last name that I shared with a scary man from a popular horror movie. :o)

Awww Jag, you’re almost there!

As for me, I’m still trying to get used to this new name of mine. It is *not* coming easily either.

How exciting that you’re almost to the wedding and honeymoon.

As far as the name, I got married in August and just changed my name. I had to be emotionally prepared for it. Still haven’t changed my driver’s license or work stuff, but legally I am now Mrs. McBride. Weird.

Hehe, I doubt it’ll take me any time at all to get used to it, since I’m not changing my last name! LOL!

However, getting used to calling my FI my husband will take some time, since I’ve been calling him my FI for so long! (except for at work, I can’t WAIT to call him my husband in front of my co-workers and especially my bosses, hehehehehe)

I’m not there yet but my BM got married in November and she still gets a little smile on her face when she uses her new surname. Maybe having so many little kidoos calling you Mrs. Jaguar will make it easier, if not cuter. (Ps: yay! You’re almost there!)

Ooohhh your day is almost here! I personally cannot wait to change my name! I hate my last name, but I love FI’s, so I am happily embracing the name change.

I changed mine about a month ago and I still hesitate when I say my new name, doesn’t roll of the tongue as easily. I feel like it will become more normal now that I’ve started using it for work and all other aspects of life. Making reservations under my new name is also odd…

I’m hoping I get more used to my new last name after we do the religious ceremony. I’ve still gotta change US license, bank cards and gmail accounts, but that’s about it. All my Swiss stuff is already the new name. Mostly I get confused and don’t know if I should tell people what my name is right now. I’ve been trying not to use it for the past 10 months honestly!

Your kiddos will help you get used to it I think! Good luck tomorrow! Sunny skies! ;)

I’m getting married in July, and starting my teacher training in September, so I’ll never even be a “Miss” to the children. My friends also call me by my last name, or nick-name versions of my last name quite a lot. They’re quite adamant that they are not going to stop just because I’m getting married! I think they will take longer to get used to it than me.@TinyTina: glad that you’re getting a up-graded last name!

Oh gosh, Im still not used to my name. Im so not used to it that we are thinking about me keeping my original name for everything rather than go through the hassle of changing it officially. Also, Im lazy.

Im so excited- you’re getting married soon!!!!!!!
