Mrs. Bunting, Grand Rapids, MI Age and Occupation: 24, freelance illustrator & print production Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, graduate of history Engagement Date: December 3, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2011 Venue: Spring Grove Park & St. George Banquet Center About Me: I am a freelance illustrator and designer with a love of nature and a taste for adventure. Textures and color fuel my world, along with apple cider and noodles. I'll try anything once, especially if it involves heights or food. I've hiked the Grand Canyon, gone sky diving, cuddled a baby wolf, and now my latest venture consists of designing and planning a large wedding involving color, DIY details, love, and marrying my best friend.
About Mrs. Bunting

Tuxedos never really fit in with the outdoor ceremony we’ve been planning, and though I was slightly sad I wouldn’t see Mr. Bunting all dressed up in one, I’ve never regretted our decision to avoid the tux. They do look snazzy, but there were several factors that turned us away from them and, honestly, they never stood a chance. (We really wanted to embrace the atmosphere of our park, and tuxedos were just too formal. We also had to consider the potential summer heat.)

In the beginning, I had told Mr. Bunting that he could choose what he and the groomsmen wanted to wear aside from a tux (unless he reeeeally wanted them). If they wanted to wear suit jackets, they could wear suit jackets. If they didn’t want to (and I was secretly hoping they wouldn’t), then they wouldn’t have to. Of course they didn’t want to wear jackets for an outdoor June wedding, so it was a win-win situation!

I stayed true to my decision of putting Mr. Bunting in charge of the groomsmen. I let him mull it over. He mulled it over a lot (or perhaps too little). I casually reminded him that we needed to start making decisions for their attire. He mulled it over some more. I began to wonder if he really was thinking about it, or if he even cared, so I started probing him more for ideas and answers. I thought maybe if I showed him some ideas, he’d find something he liked. So I started focusing my Google and blog searches on groomsmen attire.

Haha, that’s when it all changed.

I found images that I fell in love with. I showed them to Mr. Bunting.

Let me pause for just a moment to give a warning. Ladies, don’t ever go out of your way to show your partner images of styles you don’t like or styles that just won’t work. There is a very high chance that your partner will take one look, point at that very image, and say, “I like that one!” And that’s exactly what Mr. Bunting did.

I didn’t show him any images that I didn’t like, but I did make the mistake of showing him an image that, while so very cool and awesome, simply did not mesh with the rest of our wedding. It was this one:

And Mr. Bunting loved it. Le sigh. MOH Bunting and I had to explain to him that it just wouldn’t work with our color scheme or the rest of the wedding’s tone, so I tried to distract him with these:

So much for my vow to let Mr. Bunting pick the style! I was in love, and it was with bow ties and suspenders (and Mr. Bunting, of course). Now before you judge, Mr. Bunting still had some opinions that I was more than happy to oblige, such as no tan or khaki colors.

We had the guys purchase heather gray pants from Jos. A. Banks, and I found coordinating fabrics in colorful seersuckers and cottons for my seamstress to fashion the bow ties out of. I love the mismatched-bow-tie look, so each groomsmen will have a different fabric.

We left it up to the guys to buy or find a white shirt and black dress shoes, and Mr. Bunting and I scoured the mall for the suspenders. Kohl’s had the best selection, and after an hour or so of Mother Bunting, the cashier, and me trying to figure out the best method to get the best deal with all our coupons, we left with 12 pairs of suspenders. OK, OK. I couldn’t decide which style I liked best in the store, so we bought enough of two different types. After seeing them with the pants and a white shirt, this is the version we decided to keep:

Mother Bunting is amazing with coupons, so after the current “buy one get one 50% off” deal and her coupon skills, we got these Dockers suspenders for about $11 a pair.

I’m not sure if Mr. Bunting loved the idea of suspenders and bow ties initially, but after actually seeing some of the things come together in person he’s completely on board. I know he wouldn’t agree to them if he didn’t like them at all, so again, it’s a win-win! Besides, Mr. Bunting’s outfit is different than the groomsmen’s and he really loves it, but that’s for another post.

What are you dressing the boys in? Did your partner have a strong opinion or preference, or did he go with the flow like Mr. Bunting ended up doing?

I can see why Mr. Bunts loved the first image! It’s great! But yours is even better now that you figured out a way to tie it into your wedding. I love the idea. I laughed out loud about how long it’s taking Mr. Bunts to think about the dress choice (or not really think about it?)… I’m in the same boat with Mr. Sweets (& also don’t want him to go the tux way…unless he really, really wants to) & a decision has to be made soon!!

I think its cute. We were having problems of picking too. We went with a tux for the ceremony and jeans and a t-shirt for the reception (which we are providing, I felt bad for making them rent tuxes so they can wear them for 3 hours, so we are buying them jeans and john deere t-shirts. We are having a john deere themed wedding!)

I like the suspenders!

I like my FI’s personal style, so I am letting him wear whatever he feels appropriate, regardless of whether or not it matches the color scheme or “tone.” I can’t imagine that he would veto a dress that I was really excited about, so I would never think to veto an outfit that he was really excited about.

He ended up picking a beautiful Paul Smith charcoal suit.

FI took forever!! Finally I told FI to take his very stylish BM and go look at the mens wearhouse. They chose tuxs (I wasnts TOO thrilled) But he was SO excited in his choices, and even called to see the color of my dress. (mine is a very VERY light Ivory, but told him white to keep it simple, and I like cream dress with white shirts better) His is different from the GM, and even picked out a little one for our son. That was adorable. He was going on and on about our sons tux, and hes not even 2!! lol..

Loooove this look, B! I so wanted to do this, but it was just a tad too informal for our wedding :) Glad I can live vicariously through you.

I love this look, but there was no way Mr. Pony would go for it, le sigh.

Great deal on the suspenders! Mr. E picked the outfit for the guys, I added in the ties.

This is a great idea. Since our wedding will be a bit more formal, the boys will buy their black suits and black shoes. Then we’ll get the ivory dress shirts and ties and present as their groomsmen gifts. Speaking of coupons, I had a 20% off coupon at Macy’s and found matching Tommy Hilfiger ties (which were also on clearance and coincidentally in our colors), so the final cost was about 5 dollars for each. Cha-ching!!!

Beautiful inspiration pics! Mr. Seal and his guys are rockin’ bow ties too. I left the decision up to him as to what they’d be wearing but I definitely went with him to pick out his tux and gave my “gentle” opinion ;)

Monocles are needed. Because I love me some Mr. Peanut.

I digress. I love what your guys are wearing!
