Sing Me a Sweet Song

June 9th, 2011 @ 5:18 pm by Mrs. Bacon

When you watch as much TV as the Bacons do, you can’t really help but find inspiration there over and over. Pair that with the fact that I’m a giant Gleek, and it’s no surprise that I am gradually building a song list that is heavily laden with songs that the Glee Club have performed.

Sing Me a Sweet Song : wedding chicago music 251685 01 251685_01
At Glee Live last weekend!

There have been a number of episodes that got me thinking about music, but there was one in particular that gave me goosebumps and brought a tear to my eye. They dedicated an entire show to the greatness that is Fleetwood Mac, and the moment I heard the intro to this song, I knew it had to be part of our big day.

I turned to the Baconator beaming, and was like “OMG I LOVE THIS SONG!” His response was a blank stare and “You know this song? I’ve never heard it before.” Clearly that child of the eighties spent his youth listening to Metallica and not the vocal stylings of one, Stevie Nicks.

Songbird has lyrics that are so sweet and full of love that are perfect for our wedding, but I had completely forgotten how much I loved it until I saw it on the small screen.

For you there’ll be no crying

For you the sun will be shining

’Cause I feel that when I’m with you

It’s alright, I know it’s right

And the songbirds keep singing

Like they know the score

And I love you, I love you, I love you

Like never before

To you, I would give the world

To you, I’d never be cold

’Cause I feel that when I’m with you

It’s alright, I know it’s right

And the songbirds keep singing

Like they know the score

And I love you, I love you, I love you

Like never before

Like never before; like never before

Lyrics via Lyrics007

Eva Cassidy’s version has been on one of my mellow mixes on my iPod since Love Actually came out and now every time it comes on, I grin. Ladies, I’ve finally got a song to walk down the aisle to!

Songbird written by Fleetwood Mac / Performed by Eva Cassidy/ From the Love Actually Soundtrack/ via YouTube

It’s admittedly a bit slower than I had planned on when I first envisioned my walk down the aisle, but now it gives me a solid beat that’ll slow me down and force me not to run down the aisle. Maybe this way I’ll have enough time to let it all sink in that the day I’m getting married has really come.

How did you pick the song for your entrance? Are you going the more traditional route or with something off the wall?

I love that song!!! I bawled like a BABY when that episode of Glee aired. I love that show so much but that has got to be one of the best episodes they’ve done!

I just Love Eva Cassidy! I used her version of Wonderful World for my BM’s to walk down the aisle to. I love her version of Songbird - it’s just perfect!

Hey! I watched the episode and had the same AHA! moment! I had been searching and searching for a father-daughter dance song and I instantly thought this was perfect. My dad is the one who got me obsessed with Fleetwood Mac and this song is enough about love and change and all that good stuff without being so lovey that it would be creepy to dance to with my dad. Glad I’m not the only one who became obsessed (although I think we might use the Glee version because I like it more than the original McVie version)

Hehe, too funny. After I picked the song to walk down (Somewhere over the rainbow) it was on the (last) season finale of Glee. Beautiful song Bacon!

I love that song! Tears are going to be in abundance when you walk down the aisle, Bacon. I walked down to part of the Portuguese Love Theme from the Love Actually soundtrack. :)

I LOL’ed when you mention the whole Metallica thing. Mr. M. is the exact same way! When our DJ ask for a list of some of his favor songs he listed his entire Metallica collection. ;)

What a beautiful song and I agree there won’t be a dry eye…do you have your ‘Tissues for your Tears of Joy’ packets made already? Thank you for posting the lyrics! I just heard this song last week at my cousin’s funeral and know why it was chosen now: she and her husband shared a tremendous love and it was just one of the musical tributes to that love. Every woman in the world should be that blessed with a great love and how wonderful that you are too. You will have an awesome start to your married life, yay!

A gorgeous version of the song! Love, Christine McVie (her song I believe, not Stevie) and Eva. This song translates great to live strings, and thus you could pick up the pace a little for the walking if you’d consider or can budget for live music. All you’d need would be a violin & a good acoustic guitarist. Then, you could print the lyrics on the back of your program, so they’d be meaningful to all your guests a little longer.

Contemporary songs done on strings rock…so beautiful. Recently we’ve played ” Marry Me”, “Yellow”, “Somewhere Only We Know”, “Nightswimming” and “At Last”, “Here There & Everywhere”, “I’m Yours” and “The Way I Am” by Ingrid Michaelson, and “Lucky” on our Violin, Acoustic Guitar & Cello trio!

Just a thought for the musical brides among us. Great choice, Miss Bacon! Gleek-on

Great song! My entrance song is “Con te Partiro” by Andrea Bocelli. I’ve always loved him, and that song. When I was looking for my entrance song, I wanted something classic but not “Canon in D.” Those violins ALWAYS make my heart feel like it’s going to lift right out of my chest. And the thought of walking down the aisle to such a beautiful song towards the man I love and will spend the rest of my life with … I’m going to cry right now! haha!

Enterance song is something that I’m not really ahppy about. I was supposed to walk to VSM’s version of “All Apologies,” but it was cloudy, so I went with The Beatles “All You Need is Love,” which was supposed to be “Something.” That doesn’t make sense, but it does.

@Lisa: That song is so close to my heart!!

Mr. D’s family is Sicilian and sometimes after a full meal and too much wine we put on Con te Partiro and we all hug and cry and sing at the top of our voices!

We will be using this as our farewell song; final song of the evening- beats the heck out of “Closing Time”, no?!!
