Mrs. Seal's Picture
Mrs. Seal, San Francisco Age and Occupation: 25, Personal Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Sales and Support Specialist Engagement Date: December 12, 2009 Wedding Date: November 2011 Venue: Sts Peter and Paul Church/The Bently Reserve About Me: I am a goofy, wannabe crafty, well-intentioned Renaissance Woman (OK, perhaps "aimless wanderer" is a more aptly suited term for me, but hopefully you get the point)—basically I dabble in just about everything and pride myself in such. Without warning, I occasionally breakout into soulful improvised songs and interpretive dances and there's just no stopping me! As so many others before me, planning our wedding has unearthed a deep, intense passion for all things bridal and I secretly fear the day it will come to an end. Mr. Seal and I are quite the pair and life with him by my side is extremely rewarding—I am so thankful to have found him. Together we are planning a black-tie San Francisco affair for 250—light on the stuffiness and with lots of extra Seal-y flair.
About Mrs. Seal

Mr. S and I suffer from our own compulsions.

No walking under ladders, no opening umbrellas indoors, and we’re both really careful with mirrors—you get the point.

Cue the Stevie Wonder background music:

Our beloved baseball is a sport of superstitions and we play into it. For example, Mr. Seal won’t come to my mom’s house anymore for dinner while the Yankees are playing because, “The Yankees are 1 and 6″ when he’s there. And you know what? Call me crazy, but I understand it and let him be.

Mr. S wearing his rally cap while watching baseball + baseball news on two screens.

I, myself, am pretty convinced that all of my family’s rituals helped the Giants win the World Series last year. My “rally babushka” outfit (basically me with a Giants scarf wrapped around my face) NEVER failed. Seriously…this babushka made our boys hit home runs.

My superstitions mostly manifest themselves in my need to keep my loved ones safe. When saying goodbye, I have to tell my family members: “Bye. I love you. Drive careful. Ride careful. Walk careful. (Fly careful if it fits.) Have fun!” to which they must respond with “OK” (not “all right,” “you got it,” or any other variation).

Yes, hive, this keeps them safe. I can’t believe I just admitted that to you all—see how close I feel to you guys?!

Anyway, to the point, weddings are not without their own superstitions and I’d like to explore some of them.

1. Seeing the bride before the wedding is “bad luck”: As far as I know, this belief stems from ancient times and arranged marriages. The groom wasn’t to see the bride before the wedding so he couldn’t be all, “Oh no, she’s ugly. I don’t care how many goats her dad gives me, I’m not marrying that.” Therein causing bad fortune for the family.

I think the pug is pretty cute, actually.

Anyway, this superstition has evolved into more of a tradition—many a bride and groom, though perfectly aware of what their SO looks like, prefer to wait until the altar.

Our decision: While it would be beneficial to snap pictures before the wedding, Mr. Seal will not be seeing me until I step through the church doors with my father. I told you we were superstitious!

2. “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue…and a silver sixpence in her shoe”: All of these items are seen as good luck tokens for the bride—each representing something. The “something old” is supposed to symbolize the bride’s past and her family, while the “something new” represents optimism for the future. Ideally, the bride would get her “something borrowed” from someone who is happily married in hopes that some of that fortune rubs off on her. The “something blue” stems, most probably, from Roman times—brides wore blue as a representation of love, purity and fidelity. And lastly, the sixpence coin is a token of financial security.

Our decision: Seeing as how I’ve already admitted my flair for the superstitious, I will definitely have all of the aforementioned items come wedding day. (Plus, I think it’s kind of a fun challenge to work them all in somehow.)

3. Rain on the wedding day: Depending on who you ask this can be either “good” or “bad” luck. In many cultures, most recognizably in Hindu tradition—rain is considered good luck because a “wet knot is harder to untie.” Some think of rain on wedding day as a symbol of the many tears a bride will cry during her marriage.

Our stance: While it seems as though this can fall either way, we’d still prefer if it didn’t rain on our wedding day. This really has nothing to do with superstition and everything to do with vanity—my hair goes nuts in the rain and I’d love to not have to worry about my gown getting soaked before the ceremony. (Though we’re having an indoor ceremony/reception…we have two different venues and are traveling by open trolley…there is still potential for disaster.)

There are tons more, but I won’t bore you with them all. I just think it’s interesting how some superstitions have evolved into full-on customs!

What about you guys? Are you feeding into the wedding-related superstitions? Do you have any quirky ones of your own?

Oh and…bye. I love you. Drive careful. Ride careful. Walk careful. Have fun!

Say OK! ;)

haha this is too cute of a post! :) My family has a lot of the same superstitions….we’re more in the way of dreams though. Whenever we dream certain things or water= bad things to come. I haven’t admitted it yet, but I’ve dreamt water almost every night…. :’( good luck to you & Mr Seal! :)

Your goodbye is like ours when we fly. I always have to say, “Fly pretty!” My mom started it and it doesn’t feel right if I don’t say it.

Also, we have to kiss each other good bye. If I forget, I march right back into the house.

Hmm, I’ve always thought rain on your wedding day was like a free ride when you’ve already paid. Or some good advice that you just didn’t take. Who would’ve thought it figures?

Ok! :)

We (read I) observed the somethings, minus the silver sixpence. I did that once with a penny and it just hurt so I bypassed it entirely. And I wore flats so the bottom of the shoe thing wasn’t going to work. ;)

OK! :D We didn’t have any wedding superstitions, but my mom and I never travel long distances without a lucky coin that we’ve decided keeps us safe!

Teehee, thanks for playing along everybody :)

@mrs.ball2b: Awwe! Yer going to turn that superstition around. Dreaming about water is now going to mean *awesome* things are to come :D

@SweetSalz21: Fly pretty! That is adorable!!!

@Mrs. Tartlet: I have a lucky coin too! ;)

@Miss Cannon: Bwahah…I almost referenced Alanis but that songs frustrates me! None of what she describes is ironic. Ooooh, or is that what makes the song ironic?! A song about irony isn’t ironic at all…ahhh, whatever. Lol.

OK! :)
I did tie in the somethings (except the sixpence) in the wedding and I didn’t want rain on our day either. But it still rained, so good luck?

I always tell my family and fiance, “Ok, I love you” as a way of closing a phone call. I want to make sure that, if those are the last words I ever speak to them, they will know how much I love them.
But, for the other superstitions, I’m not so into them. But I can totally understand how others can be. :-)

Ok!!!!!!!!!
I loved this.
My big one is a bloody moon. Ie when you look at the moon and its the color of blood. I freak when I see it and frantically start calling everyone I know telling them to be safe, careful, and do nothing risky and I make them tripple pinky swear via the phone. Sense I firmly believe this is a warning sign that something bad either has happened or is about to happen to someone I care about. And they take me seriously.
I also get all happy when I see a moon halo sense that is good things to come. And I get all excited.

what do you mean bore us?!?! I want to hear more of your superstitions. I’m with you on all of them, I think rain is good luck, we won’t be seeing each other till the ceremony starts, and I am so going to selectively pick my something borrowed, if someone divorced offers me something I’m gonna’ be like “hell no!” haha, more more more superstitions!!!

I forgot to say OK!!!
By the way, I am also very frustrated with ‘Ironic’, all of those things are coincidence, not irony, but the definition of irony is the use of words expressing something other than their literal intention, so if we replace “words” with “song” then YES!! ‘Ironic’ is ironic… very very good call, I’ve never caught that before!

I wanted a six pence and had everything else except that. And no, we didn’t see each other until I was walking down the aisle. It did rain, but let up before it was time to get married, so it was the best of both.
