Miss Sweet Cream, Philadelphia Age and Occupation: 26, Public Relations Account Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Outside Sales Engagement Date: July 4, 2010 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church / Rosebank Winery About Me: Born in the ‘burbs of Philly, it took some time living in the Big Apple to realize that I’m a girl who likes her roots. That’s why the mister and I bought a 1950s house on a charming street not too far from our childhood stompin’ grounds. This could also be the reason why our hometown is the scene where we are planning our super sweet, totally charming, BBQ-for-supper wedding that I never knew I always wanted. I DIE over DIY projects and live for vintage, heartfelt inspiration. I obsess over all things mid-century (from forks to furniture). Love is… cartoons and flea markets, and I am known to whip up a mean banana cream pie. I met the Mr. in grade school and after that boy took me for a spin on the handle bars of his BMX, I knew that things would never be the same again. Besides lovin’ my Mr., I also love to plan, sew and create, and that’s just what I’m doing as I navigate through the details, creating a laid-back day that oozes charm; one that will go down in (at least our) history as the Best. Day. Of all time.
About Miss Sweet Cream

As I mentioned, I was excited about figuring out how just to get our guests to mark our date in their planners, type it into their iPhones, or put a big heart around it on their family calendars; I just couldn’t believe when they were finally done!!

Well…just as a refresher, here they are—all adorable!

Here they are lying flat on a table…but scroll down to see them hanging vertically in all of their glory.

(All photos are personal photos)

I personally think that they ooze charm and kitsch. Plus it is so much fun to go over to houses of future witnesses to our union and see them displayed in different ways. While Mr. Sweet Cream’s aunt has one in her living room being held up by two country doodads, Gmom Sweet Cream has hers taped on the front of her fridge.

Well, I thought that I would share with the hive exactly how this virtually free but crazy time-suck of a project happened.

This is what you will need:

  • Glue gun and glue sticks
  • String
  • Your printed paper
  • Scissors
  • Envelopes
  • Envelope liners (After scouring the craft stores for yellow and gray scrapbook paper, I wound up making color photocopies of the fabric that inspired the color scheme from the get-go.) NOTE: I used this tutorial for the envelope liners…except I just used scissors.
  • Sticker paper (optional) / addressing envelopes

I used this text: S A V E the D A T E / Miss Sweet Cream and Mister Sweet Cream are tying the knot. / XX. XX. 2011. I used Budmo Jiggler font in gray (12 point) for the individual letters and numbers and Missed Your Exit for flags that were words (e.g., “the”). NOTE: Make sure to space it apart enough both horizontally and vertically so that you can have your “flag” without cutting into other letters.

I used a 48-point font and spaced them out enough so that I could cut around them.

I made a template of how big I wanted each “flag” by just cutting around a “scrap” printed out piece and going from there. You could also draw around a scrap and cut it out.

Next, I folded over that template to make the fold.

I then made two snips on each side to get the “bunting” effect.

Little White Flag(s): Save the Date Tutorial : wedding diy philadelphia save the dates stationery tutorial Img 08604 IMG_08604

This is how your template will look.

Little White Flag(s): Save the Date Tutorial : wedding diy philadelphia save the dates stationery tutorial Img 08605 IMG_08605

You then go to town cutting out all your letters and words. I made words for “the,” “Miss Sweet Cream,” “Mr. Sweet Cream,” and “are tying the knot.” I used Missed Your Exit for that.

If you are using regular computer paper, you can hold it up to the light and see the letters and center your template. For the wider letters/words, I just held my template out and cut, leaving space on the side, but making sure to end at the same bottom part of the flag.

Soon you will have all of your flags cut out (woohoo!).

I would spend hours watching baseball games during the playoffs, cutting the “flags” and putting the STD “packages” of flags into envelopes. That way I could do all my hot-gluing at one time.

Then comes the folding. Just fold each one over so that you have a front and back.

When you’re ready to make the bunting, cut the string to the length needed. Depending on whether or not you have your partner or a great friend around to help you, you can have one of them hold the end—or you can use something to tie it to…like a soda bottle. If you are using something like this, make sure that you have extra-long string. If I wasn’t using the bottle, I would cut my string approximately 36 inches. But you will do some trimming. It’s just better if you have more then less. Right?

Little White Flag(s): Save the Date Tutorial : wedding diy philadelphia save the dates stationery tutorial Img 08803 IMG_08803

Heat up your trusty glue gun and put a small trail of glue along the tiny part of the flag.

Then you glue each one on in order, pinching a little to seal. Leave a tail on the left. You can also tie a couple knots. (”Tying the knot!” ;) )

Little White Flag(s): Save the Date Tutorial : wedding diy philadelphia save the dates stationery tutorial Img 08805 IMG_08805

Keep on going until you hit your “year”—AKA the last flag.

Snip the string, leaving enough to tie some knots on the right side.

Then you shriek in excitement of how adorable your STD is! So CUTE!!!

And the icing on the cake is that they were almost free. I just had to buy the envelopes and the stamps!

STDs hanging in our hallway

Even though they took so much time, I think it was worth it. And don’t worry, Mr. Sweet Cream helped hold the string for me to glue, he but wasn’t here for the tutorial. Mama Sweet Cream helped hold sometimes, too. Aren’t they great?!? I carefully folded the STDs up and gently placed them in the lined envelopes. And off they went!

I got so many compliments, and it’s fun to see how people display them (mostly taped to the refrigerator, but in other places too!). They needed a 64-cent stamp since they were a little bit thicker and wouldn’t make it through the machine (according to the U.S. Post Office).

Was your save the date labor intensive? Did you figure out a way to have it cost next to nothing?
