Showering the Groom

June 10th, 2011 @ 5:01 pm by Mrs. High Wire

First off, this isn’t going to have anything to do with hygiene. Mr. High Wire gets an A+ in that department already.

We’re talking about the other kind of showers—the ones that involve “showering” the bride with gifts before the wedding.

Nowadays, showers aren’t only for the bride. In bridal-shower history, the shower was in place as an alternative to the dowry that was offered along with the bride to the groom. But that is most likely not the case for very many marriages in our circles anymore.

Grooms deserve a little celebrations in their honor! Three cheers for equality. :) Here are some different ways to involve the groom during shower season.

Tool Party

This can be an event specifically for the groom where guests bring gifts like power tools, lawn and garden supplies, etc.

Stock-the-Bar Party

The purpose of this shower is to provide beer, wine, and spirit-related gifts to stock the bar of the couple’s future home together.

Barbeque Party

This is a great idea for the man who loves to grill. The host can provide the meat and people can bring gifts like a favorite barbeque sauce, grilling tool, or grilling cookbook. A group could even pool together and buy a grill. Work in some backyard volleyball or flag football, and you have a great party on your hands.

So much of the wedding industry is all bride 24/7. Who’s to say the groom shouldn’t get his own celebrations, too?

Are you doing a groom’s shower?

I think that would be really cool for a groom. I’ve been to a couple’s shower before, but never heard of one just for the groom.

FI was sooo jealous after the bridal shower. He’s like…’You get lingerie and gifts, and good food, while I have to hide away for the day? Not fair!’

I think a Tool Party sounds like a blast…I might have to mention it to him!

Who would throw it? His dad?

OMG, I totally want to do this! I’d never heard of such a thing until my FI’s best friend’s fiancee threw him one last year, and it was such a huge hit with all the boys, they have not stopped talking about it since!! It was super cute - they called it a “manshower” and she set up sports-trivia spins on traditional shower games and gave out gift cards to sporting goods stores etc. as prizes. My FI’s groomsmen are planning to steal the idea and throw him one because they thought it was so great! Glad this is catching on! Can’t wait to hear about it if y’all do it!

I love all of these! Wait, can the bride still attend? Because a barbeque…. just try to keep me away.

I’m so happy you’re mentioning these, Highwire! We’re doing a joint shower- it’s a tool shower for Mr. Cannon and the guys are going to barbecue outside and hang out while the women are inside doing my bridal shower. Then we’ll all hang out together and eat the barbecue! The funniest part is that I’ll probably get a lot of cooking utensils, and Mr. Cannon is actually the cook in our relationship, so the shower gifts will pretty much all be for him. :) My parents did the same kind of thing for their shower, so my dad is crazy excited to buy tools for Mr. Cannon since pretty much his whole arsenal of tools is from their shower.

I love this idea! I’m not even sure I’m having a shower myself but he deserves something special since the wedding is mostly about me.

We registered at Sears to fulfill a “man quotient” for Mr. SC, but unfortunately, no takers so far :-/

Our friends threw us an “unshower” as they called it since they wanted to include couples. Instead of playing games we went to dinner and split up into boys vs girls and did a scavenger hunt and then met up to tally the scores and hit up the local bars for drinks and dancing.
