Sticks and Stones

June 10th, 2011 @ 10:41 am by Mrs. Balloons

OKK, just sticks. Well twigs. Err sticks and twigs…whatever you want to call them, here is a tutorial on how I turned an ugly vase into a cute, rustic one.

First meet said ugly vase:

So it’s not like its that ugly. It just has some rust type of stains in some spots so I wouldn’t have used it as is.

I started by hot gluing some burlap around the vase. I figured the twigs would stick better to it than the glass itself.

Then I took a bag of twigs that I collected from my backyard and started gluing them around the vase. I tried to glue them to the burlap as well as to each other so they’d hold better.

Gluing all the twigs together definitely took a lot longer than I expected.

A while back, I bought some pretty fabric from Hobby Lobby without knowing what I’d use it for. I thought this project would be a good time to bust it out to try jazz up the vase a bit more.

I cut a strip about 2.5 inches wide & long enough to wrap around the vase & tie into a bow.

with some fake peonies to get an idea of what it’ll look like with flowers…although I ultimately envision flowers with more height in it

Our wedding date is now less than two months away! Aahhh! Time to kick it into high gear on my DIY projects. At least one more is now checked off the list, though.

Anyone giving new life to old vases or other items they wouldn’t have otherwise used?

I really like this! I have some planter boxes that I’m not crazy about the color. I had been intending to put some ribbon around it but I might just do what you did to your vase. I think I would like them better. Thanks for the inspiration.

Ok I am using mason jars that I painted but don’t love the way they look so I was going to wrap them in raffia but THIS looks so much cuter!

Thank you so much for sharing this! I am going to use this idea in part to add to our mis-matched shabby-chic centerpieces

That’s cute and so simple! I’d say, one can even use old tins or jars and it would look perfect too. Yaay for Upcycling!
