About Mrs. High Wire

Friendships with Your Friends Who Are Single

I love my friends who are single and by no means do I feel more distant from them since becoming engaged. Spending time with my girlfriends gives me great joy, and I try to always make time for them no matter what. My best guy and girl friends have been there for me through thick and thin, and maintaining my relationships with them is of paramount importance to me.

Single friends are great because they open you up to new experiences outside of your world and share amazing/hilarious/awful dating stories that you otherwise would have nothing to do with as an engaged person. They also probably have similar interests to you and are happy to participate in activities with you that your SO might totally hate, like attending a dance class, eating at a vegan restaurant, or going to see a chick flick at the movie theater.

Friendships with Other Couples

We’ve never really been “double date” kind of people, and that has been fine. For a while we were the only couple in our mutual circle of local friends.

Since we’ve been engaged, we’ve been spending a lot more time with other friends of ours who are couples and share in some of our same interests and lifestyles—which is arguably sometimes very different from the interests and lifestyles of our single friends.

Your free time changes when you have a significant other to consider, and basically all of your life decisions involve having to come to an agreement with a person besides yourself for just about everything you do. Learning how to do that is a unique process and not something that we had to do quite as much before we were living together and engaged.

It is rewarding to connect with other couples and see how they interact as happy newlyweds. It excites me to know that we have that to look forward to! There are also challenges that we face as a couple, and having other couple friends to seek advice from is really a helpful blessing.

The biggest friendship change is that I moved to a new city to be with Mr. Snow Cone, and 99% of our friend time is spent with alllllll guys. It can be fun, but sometimes I need a little estrogen in my life :)

Our individual friendships have gotten a lot stronger since we were engaged! We both wanted to make sure we maintained relationships where we could hang out individually and as a couple.

My single and dating/not engaged friends have been driving me insane since I got married. They don’t really get why I can’t hang out 4 days a week or go out drinking every weekend. I try to maintain the relationships and have girl time, but I seriously had to talk to them about how I have other responsibilities and cannot hang out every night - plus my evenings are my only time during the week to hang out with my husband. I like coming home and having dinner with him and relaxing. I think they’ll get it eventually, but for now, I feel like the bad guy for telling them ‘no’ all the time.

FH and I have been living together a little over 2 years, so we got all of the shifting and changing out of our systems already. Like Miss Snow Cone, I moved to be with my FH and have spent a lot of time getting to know his (now our) mostly male friends. We share a lot of the same interests and I can go do my own thing without feeling like I have to do whatever guy thing I’m not interested in, but it definitely helped when one of FH’s friends started dating someone. That gal and I have gotten pretty close in the year since she’s been around! I have more chances to go out and have “girl time” now, and I think I value time spent with just FH more than I did when we weren’t living together.

No changes yet, but once I move down to NC it will be all couples! But that’s because I won’t know anyone, hopefully I’ll meet some new single peeps too.
