About Mrs. Macarons

I went into my first makeup trial with what I thought was pretty clear inspiration. Neutral eyes that popped, rosy cheeks, and some color on the lips. Day to day I keep my makeup pretty simple.

And I’ll add some shimmer and a few false lashes for a night out on the town.

For the wedding I wanted to still look like me, but better.

While the makeup artist was finishing up my foundation, she suggested I go for a little more drama: winged-out eyeliner and false lashes (I was thinking like the photo above) and a little contouring to bring out my cheekbones. She warned that most brides are reluctant to wear so much makeup and that it really is less noticeable on film. I should have stuck to my guns, but the trial was free. I’d never had my makeup done before and she’s the professional, so how bad could it be?

When she finally spun my chair around I was shocked—it was a lot of makeup and a lot to take in. I’m sure she picked up on my disappointment because she immediately suggested we do less eyeliner the day off. I didn’t know what to say. I wanted to be positive, but all I could muster was, “I don’t look like me.” I thanked her and said I needed to think about it.

These photos were taken shortly after I left:

You can probably tell by my expression I was not diggin’ it. From the bronze business by my temples to the noticeably lined lips, it was over the top. Even the false lashes wanted no part of it. (You can see the lash peeling away from the inside corner of my left eye.)

I know these are self-portraits and that our photographers won’t be this close, but I couldn’t get past seeing the foundation on my face, let alone everything else that was going on. As soon as I got home I went to town with makeup remover. Several towels later I felt better, but it was still too much.

Trial #1 was a bust, but would there be another? Maybe I should just plan on doing it myself with a little lash assistance from Sassy or Mermaid.

Did you walk out of your trial with something totally unexpected?

oy, I had an experience like that a few years ago at a makeup counter! The eyeshadow she did is actually really pretty, but I can see how it’s a little overwelming with everything else on your face! Do you know any artists a friend has used? someone more your style???

Yep. I was completely disappointed in my make-up trial. The foundation was way too heavy and started caking not hours later, and my eyeshadow started melting and was a sloppier than what I can do. I’ve got trial #2 at a different place (Sephora) this week, so hopefully it goes much better. I thought about just doing it myself the day-of, but I really don’t want that added stress and I’m sure I won’t have steady hands that day. ;)
Now granted, you DO look beautiful with the make-up, but I understand completely how despite that, it just doesn’t feel like yourself.

Has anyone ever told you that you look like the actress Amy Adams? I think you look exactly like her!!

You’re gorgeous and I think you look great in the above pics! That being said, I felt the same way you did after my make-up trial too. Hope you find something you love and makes you feel like you!

I have to say…I think the makeup looks great! I’m sure in person it felt like you were wearing about a pound of the stuff, but in photos you look fab. The only thing I’d change would be the lipstick color to something a bit less Barbie. Eyes, though…I’d keep that part.

I agree with the PP, you look lovely! Although a little over the top, I think this look with a nude lip might be just enough less to feel more like yourself.

I think your eyes look great - perhaps a little less eyeliner on the upper lids. But the lashes are amazing.

Makeup is so personal that it is hard to have someone else do it “right”. I think that on our wedding day, we just want to look like ourselves with a little extra sparkle. But a lot of makeup artists want us to be “dramatic”. Though as a semi-professional bridesmaid, I do know that you need to wear a lot more makeup than usual for good photos!

If you’re naturally fair/ pale (which it kind of looks like) the whole bronzer action by your temples/forehead was probably an attempt to give you a ‘healthy summer glow.’ *rolls eyes* You have no idea how many times this fair skinned lady has heard that.

I think that maybe if your MUA toned down the bronzer a little, and maybe picked a different shade of lipstick the over all look wouldn’t be as noticeable and look more natural.

I do really love the eyeshadow she used on your eyes though!

I had 3 make up trials before finding the one that worked. I hope you’re able to find an artist that makes you feel more like you!

I LOVE the trial! I think the colors and application are beautiful and it doesn’t look like too much to me at all. It has to last for a lot of hours, so I’d go with it. You don’t want to be touching it up all day when it starts to wear off. It may seem like a lot to you, but it will photograph beautifully!

I think you would look gorgeous no matter what, but I think some of her choices were a little misguided, especially in terms of color. Someone will know exactly how to give you the look you want, I hope you find the right person soon!

i think you look pretty great, but what matters is how comfortable you are. i think most brides deal with striking that balance btw wanting to look like ourselves vs. taking it up a notch for the big day and not looking washed out in pictures.

It looks beautiful, but I can understand how you felt it was too heavy. I hope you can find the perfect make-up for yourself on the big day!

I actually think the last picture (after you went at it with the remover) looks perfect. If you go much lighter than that, it’s not going to be visible at all in pictures. Could you do a second trial and show her that picture? Ask that it not be any heavier than that?

I think the issue with the lips is the color. A softer lighter shade will probably make you much more comfortable. The lashes are also way too heavy for what you’re asking for… maybe just a few individual lashes towards the outer corners would serve you better. And simply lighter on the eyes and cheeks.

I think this is the problem with most brides, that want dramatic, makeup that photographs well, but they don’t realize it can seem (be) heavy and feel over the top. I think your make-up looks beautiful, but you may want to try air brush foundation- it feels lighter and has amazing holding power. I hope you find what works for you.

I think this make up looks great on you! Very Hollywood but this comes from a girl that really likes a lot of make up. Anyways if you are not comfortable then go ahead and keep trying until you find your style!

Thanks everyone for all your support. I’ve been losing so much sleep worry about this. I think part of the problem is I have no idea what to do with my hair!! Maybe if I can figure that out it’ll be easier to vocalize what I’m looking for in terms of make up.

I think her application was actually beautiful and as much as it may seem like a lot of makeup it does need to last for hours and really stay in place. I think the eye color, while not the proper colors, is a great application. If you worked with her a little more and really stood firm on what you wanted I think she does actually know what she is doing and could make you look gorgeous!
