Mrs. Cannon's Picture
Mrs. Cannon, Toledo, OH Age and Occupation: 27, Financial Analyst Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Assembler Engagement Date: February 28, 2011 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: Epworth UMC & Ward Pavilion About Me: I'm the curious combination of being a go-with-the-flow, laid back, obsessive planner. I try desperately to stay as busy as possible at all times (and am succeeding big time right now!) My biggest loves in life are Law & Order: SVU, Community (the show, not the concept, although I like that, too), ice cream, white cheddar popcorn, beer, hiking, knitting, decorating, writing, being outside, spending time with friends and family and musical theater. Mr. Cannon is pretty sweet, too. We've had a lot of fun traveling and having adventures all over the country, but have finally moved back near our hometown to settle down. We're planning a low-key, colorful, fun wedding and an awesome-to-the-max reception.
About Mrs. Cannon

While the ceremony location was a no-brainer, the venue for the reception was a bit more of a challenge. I did a lot of internet browsing. Can I say as a tightwad accountant that it is highly frustrating how far many venues go to hide their costs? My decision wasn’t made solely on cost, but it was definitely an important consideration. I didn’t want to sit through a lengthy sales pitch only to find out the venue was way over our budget.

Beyond pure rental cost, I was looking at

  • Location: I wanted it within a half-hour drive of the church.
  • Requirements: I didn’t want to be forced into a particular caterer.
  • Availability: It needed to be available on our wedding day (duh).
  • Aesthetics: We wanted it to fit with our vision of a casual reception, so nothing too fancy.
  • Alcohol: It had to allow alcohol, preferably allowing us to bring our own.
  • Size: It needed to be able to fit the approximately one hundred people we are expecting.

There were several places that fit the bill, but one in particular kept standing out—Ward Pavilion. First, it was in a metropark. Having spent four years of our lives in national parks (we lived in Death Valley for two years and Grand Canyon South Rim for two years), I thought it would be a cool homage to our history to have it in a park. I also liked that it was a casual location with a woodsy feel. There were no food or alcohol restrictions (except no cash bars due to the lack of a liquor license, but we were planning an open bar anyway). And best of all, it was directly across the street from the church!

I showed the online pictures to Mr. Cannon, and he liked it as much as I did. We set up an appointment to see it in person, and it was even better than I expected! I had been worried that all the wood paneling would look a bit ’80s, but it looked more like a lodge. We decided then and there to book it. We even got a substantial discount on the rental by becoming metropark members!

Did you book the first reception location you visited?

I love the Ward Pavilion, it is so beautiful. We looked at it for our reception but had to let it go do to our guest list size. I am so happy to see a Toledo bee! Looking forward to reading all about your planning!

Oh my, I can’t decide what I want to eat for dinner without it being a huge decision…of course I didn’t pick the first place that I toured. :-)

We did! We do that with a lot of vendors actually…does that mean we’re lazy?

We checked out the Ward Pavillion too but it was too small. Its one of the few places in Toledo where you can bring in your own food so you are going to save big time there. Cant wait to see how it all turns out!

@Miss Pony: No, not lazy!
We actually looked at several venues, but came back to the first one we looked at. :)

@FurtureMrsTal: @mzlouis2b: Where are you guys having your receptions? Mr. Cannon and I used to walk around Wildwood together when we first started dating, so I’m pretty excited about Ward Pavilion!

@Miss Pony: Yeah, we did too. I choose to think we’re not lazy, but decisive. ;)

We did! Selected the first and only place we visited. Because we are “destination” (for family reasons only), I had to extract as much info as possible from a few venues via phone/internet. I was able to weed through some of the seemingly in-budget places without visiting that quickly went out of budget when they emailed me their full info not available online.

We visited the place, it was perfect, available, and in budget, so we chose it and moved on. That’s what not having a lot of time in-person in the wedding city achieves and I love it! (By the way, also originally from Cleveland, Ohio - I love your venue!)

@Miss Cannon: We had our reception at Oak Shade Grove Hall, where the German American festival is held. That worked out really well because it was where we had our first date.

Ha, yes our first venue was the first venue we visited. Of course that didn’t work out, but I still think it’s amazing !

Haha! Everything we’ve booked has been the first for us…church, reception site, photographer, caterer.

Actually, yes we did! But, that was after months of research, emails, networking, bridal shows *phewie*

I’m having engagement pictures taken at Wildwood in a few weeks, FI and I love that place! Would of loved to get married there but we have too many guests, and I was concerned about parking but if it’s across the street from the church I guess that won’t be an issue for you guys.

Hey MRS Cannon

I’m seriously considering Ward Pavillion but I’m planning my wedding from Virginia. Could you possibly provide a layout/room size? I would be SUPER greatful!!!
