Mrs. Magic's Picture
Mrs. Magic, Chapel Hill, NC Age and Occupation: 30, Licensed Clinical Social Worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Researcher Engagement Date: December 1, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Barn at Valhalla About Me: I’m a tall drink of water (5’10”!) and a Southern bride with an enormous appetite for Mexican food, good deals, anything French, and all things wedding! By day I am lucky enough to work with individuals with autism and their families. By night, I’m even luckier to be able to spend time hanging out with awesome friends, crafting, shopping, thinking about exercising, and kicking it with Mr. Magic and our two cats. I tend to have sudden, intense cravings that will not be denied (seafood enchiladas! new jeans!) and I’m prone to being a disorganized mess of anxiety and stress. After waiting (and waiting!) to get engaged, I am finally planning the colorful, fun, fabulously awesome Fall wedding of our dreams. In an effort to share the fun and craziness that is wedding planning, I’m gonna blog about it for y’all---the good, the bad, and the pretty!
About Mrs. Magic

Sooo, this past weekend I was chillin’ with the Magic Fam in Wilmington, North Carolina, enjoying the beach, walking The Loop, and eating the best hot dogs ever at The Trolley Stop and also eating some shrimp (I was hungry).

Magic Mom, Mini Magic, Magic Bro [ yes, I have a brother!], Roxie Ann (the dog), and I all decided to go for a walk. Then things got hairy.

Mistake #1:

I was holding Roxie Ann’s leash as we walked down a few flights of stairs to the ground floor. I’m not trained in dog behavior. Recently, I was holding my new refurbished iPad and was asked to also hold four tiny dogs by their leashes. I grasped the leashes and they immediately got tangled up and started tripping over each other and choking and turning blue. I was more worried about my iPad. Just kidding! [I’m not really kidding.]

Mistake #2: Roxie Ann and Magic Mom just moved into a new apartment. It’s super cute, but Roxie is still getting used to it. She also doesn’t like strangers. Or men. And she especially doesn’t like strange men. And guess what was on the stairs? A strange man. For real, he was strange—he had a peg leg and a bottle of booze. I am not making this up.

Can you see where this is going? Roxie bolted from the strange pirate man…the leash was let out all the way…and I just remember standing at the top of the stairs thinking “Should I try to run down the stairs or just try to jump to the bottom?”

No, I did not let go of the leash right away. Go back and read Mistake #1.

The good news is, by some miracle, Roxie was fine, I did not injure my face (because I’m pretty sure I was flying headfirst into the concrete sidewalk for awhile) and by an even greater miracle, I didn’t break or sprain anything. I think. I might have a slightly sprained / bruised knee, as I landed on both knees and my hands, all of which are nice and scraped and bruised. See?

That’s one of my knobby knees. The picture does not fully capture the awesome bruising, but you can see some of it on the left side there.

Anyway, I’ve been meaning to write this post for a while—a post about accidents and bad things that might happen before or on my wedding day.

When I finally got engaged, I was super excited, and immediately a bit paranoid that either I or Mr. Magic was going to be involved in some type of awful accident before the wedding day. I mean, I had waited forever (forevah-evah) and it just did not seem like we were ever going to get married! I may or may not have had the thought “If zombies are gonna attack us or the Judgment Day is coming, just please let it happen after the wedding.” What can I say, I have generalized anxiety disorder to the max, plus some crazy bride brain symptoms as well.

I’m also totally worried that something physically horrific will befall me on the wedding day…like pink eye. Or a sty. One of those rare painful zits that occurs right inside your nostril, where it hurts like a bi-atch but also everyone in the free world can see it as clear as day. A wart on my hand. A freaking migraine…ugh, that would be the WORST. Or, an entire scraped up face complete with broken nose from falling down the stairs after Roxie Ann bolted from a pirate.

It could happen.

So now you know…I’m super crazy and anxious and vain, not good with dogs, prejudiced against pirates, and I love to eat.

Do you have irrational (or totally rational) fears about the wedding day?

I constantly had thoughts/worries about anyone involved in the wedding (most of all me and my hubby) getting into some terrible accident/injuring themselves/etc/etc/etc. before the wedding. And like you, I would think, please please please please let no bad things happen until after our big day. I like to think I am not vain/selfish, but I always felt like it when I had these thoughts!

Ouch!!! That looks like it hurts!
Basically, I have the same fear of you, and of course I am a total klutz, so there is a good chance fears will become reality!
I wish there was a giant protective bubble that I could go in for the month before our wedding!

Jeez, I’m glad you’re ok Miss Magic!

I just keep having these nightmares that everything possibly disastrous will happen the day of (no limos, limos to go wrong place, place doesn’t have us on record so no wedding, invitations were never received, no photographer… and that’s just a few of them.)

But on the bright side, it’s happened, you’ve gotten your injury out of the way, so now it’s smooth sailing from here on out, lol.

I will die if I get pink eye right before the wedding. Great. Thanks. Now you have me all worried about it.

I worry about those things too and when I do try so hard to get my mind off it!! However, I will say probably the wart thing for me is the worst as I already have it! Been trying for months and it’s not really going away, so be grateful if that doesn’t pop up!

Oh totally afraid of those things! My fiance broke his elbow and dislocated his shoulder a month apart last year, and I found out that he didn’t snowboard or play hockey for 2 months before he proposed to me cause he didn’t want to be hurt and ruin it (we got engaged on a cruise). This week I had an allergic reaction to mangoes that cause my lips to swell up and blister (YUCK), two blackfly bites on my chest that reacted and swelled up and I got a chemical irritation all over my hands… hopefully I’m getting all this ugly grossness out now and next summer I’ll be fine!!!

I don’t fear anything about me. I already had my stupid injury. I tripped stepping off my patio a month ago and sprained my ankle pretty badly. I do however, fear my mother. She is the queen of ill-timing with injuries and unexpected surgeries.

Example: Maybe about 15 years ago, her sister, my aunt was getting married. About an hour before rehearsal, my mother was giving my very tall cousin a hug by stepping on a little sewing bucket. She proceded to fall and sprain her ankle and walked down the aisle the next day with a cane. She will be encased in bubble wrap if I have my way.

I loved this post. Thanks for sharing. The first thing I have to say is that I would also be prejudiced against pirates if this happened to me, so don’t feel bad. And I’m also very glad you didn’t break your face :)
I’m also very clumsy, tend to get annoying zits right before major important events, and also get bad allergy eye (I recommend Visine-A by the way, if you do get a sty, it’ll clear it up pretty quick and at least take down the swelling and redness in the meantime!) so I am totally with you on all this, ESPECIALLY the part where I’ve also been waiting forever for him to propose and to finally be married and if anything goes wrong, like if the Rapture actually had happened, I’s be like Really?!?!

I broke my ankle two days before my fiance proposed. We were on vacation in NYC and decided to go ice skating at Rockefeller Center. I fell and then spent the next two days hobbling around NYC thinking it was a bad sprain (it wasn’t). I’m glad I didn’t go to the doctor though because he surprised me with a proposal in Central Park. I’m terrified I’m going to hurt myself before the wedding, especially considering how terribly the proposal could have gone…

Glad you’re okay!
My cousin sprained her ankle at her bachlorette party 1 day before her wedding, and had to wear completely different shoes because it was so swollen on the day of. I’m crossing my fingers that nothing happens to me, especially since I’m terribly accident prone!

Ok first of all, the pirate thing was lol hilarious. When I first saw the pic and hadn’t read that far yet I was totally confused. lol.

Second, I absolutely obsess over this stuff. I’ve had a sty before and I totally worry about looking like Quasimodo for yet another picture (it was a middle school dance thing….I don’t want to think about it). And while my dog hasn’t dragged me anywhere recently, she jumps up on me and bruises me all over. I can’t wait for that garter picture with the HUGE bruises. Sexy….

i really wanted to take part in my third triathlon this year, but it would have been just 3 weeks before the wedding… and even though I was totally fine during my first two tri’s and the hundreds of 5ks i’ve done… i was just super paranoid i’d fall off my bike or something and have roadrash on my face… no tri for me this year… maybe next!

Wow, that is a nasty lookin bruise! But thankfully your face is ok and you have 4 months to heal up! I am most terrified of car accidents but also that I will break a leg or ankle and have to walk down the aisle on crutches!

I was REALLY scared of getting a migraine on the wedding day. I have them like once a year, so it was unlikely, but I was still terrified. That and the bar exam were the only two days that I was hoping I would NOT get a migraine! I didn’t - thank god!

Oh my goodness. Your knee looks so painful! I hope it doesn’t hurt as bad as it looks like it would! I am a huge klutz. I tripped UP a step at my bachelorette party and hurt my ankle. It could have been a lot worse…my friends who witnessed it were pretty sure I was going to go all the way down and slam my face into the floor. Luckily, I caught myself, but I did have a HUGE bruise and a really swollen ankle the next day. My bachelorette party was 6 days prior to my wedding, so I had a really nice bruise for the big day. It’s actually still bruised now…over 2 months later!

This make me feel a little more normal about all my irrational fears. I have become a pro at finding things to worry about for the wedding- everything from a horrible accident to the vendors like liking me. Glad to know I’m not alone! I’m also in Wilmington, NC, so the parallels are a bit too much for me.

Aw, I’m glad you’re ok Magic! I have plenty of irrational fears too! I’m convinced my cats are going to scratch my face off right before our wedding, but that’s because they scratch everything.

My biggest fear is that FH will be limping or be able to stand/dance because he is very clumsy and he hurts himself DAILY!!!
