Mrs. Marmalade's Picture
Mrs. Marmalade, Norwalk, CT/Raleigh, NC Age and Occupation: 27, Administrative Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Army Officer Engagement Date: December 31, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2011 Venue: Old Cadet Chapel/Highlands Country Club About Me: I'm a Tri-State area "lady," through and through. A big chunk of my life has been split between NYC and Connecticut, and I'm finally heading down south to live with Mr. Marmalade. Our long distance relationship has been one adventure after the next, we've spent time in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and Georgia, thanks to his military career. Next to Mr. Marmalade, my loves include live music, useless trivia, shoes, design, and my crazy half-tiger kitty, Oliver. I have a passion for food and wine, and I've been known to travel long distances to get my hands on the best meals. I come from a tight-knit big fat Greek Ecuadorian family---we're loud, we talk with our hands, and we spend hours talking loudly with our hands over large meals. I'm going to miss them so much as I pack up and begin my life, far away from home. But with Mr. Marmalade by my side, I'm ready to take on whatever may come. Next up: our wedding!

The Venue That Was…

June 14th, 2011 @ 8:46 am by Mrs. Marmalade

The search for a reception venue was frustrating, to say the least. Looking back on it, I spent a week or so sending out emails and looking through magazines. I narrowed it down to a few sites around locations we were interested in, but nothing that suited us seemed to fit in our budget. And then one Sunday morning I picked up a magazine and thought to myself, “I’ve got some time to kill. Might as well look through this thing before I toss it.” And that’s how I stumbled across this venue.

Meet Saltwater Farm Vineyard:

I had to visit this place. One weekend when Mr. Marmalade was home for a visit, we got up early and drove two hours from home to take a look for ourselves. We were floored by the beautiful site; it was peaceful, the views were just stunning, and the building was a gorgeous balance of vintage and modern.

In their words:

Saltwater Farm Vineyard is set on more than 100 panoramic acres - 15 of which are planted with six varieties of grapes, and bordered by tidal marshes, a cove and vistas of Long Island Sound, near the historic New England coastal village of Stonington, Connecticut. The centerpiece of the bucolic property, which has a small private airport dating to the late 1930s, is a World War II - vintage hangar, designed by the late architect John W. Lincoln, a colleague of Walter Gropius. The hangar, opening onto terraces and the vineyard, has been preserved and converted into a winery. The seamlessly renovated building showcases a vaulting roof, silvery milled aluminum exterior, the original interior wood sheathing and, dominating the airy room and gathering places, handsome and massive timber trusses. - From the Saltwater Farm Vineyard site.

Perfection. For a wine geek who grew up in coastal Connecticut, a seaside vineyard is a dream! Add the history of the airplane hangar and we were both sold.

We were so happy to meet with the owners of Saltwater Farm. They were so kind and warm. They are wonderful, friendly, down-to-earth people. We were so excited to work with them! (I believe the first thing I said to Mr. M when I saw them was, “Oh my gosh, they’re so cool!”) Working with them was by far the easiest decision I had made about anything related to our wedding, up to that point.

We put down a deposit and started planning an intimate, semi-destination wedding at a seaside vineyard. But it wasn’t meant to be. (It still hurts to look at these images.)

Did you find a dream venue? Was it just a dream, or did it become a reality?

I found my dream venue and it didn’t work out for me either. I had my deposit down, and all of my decorations and everything were based on this venue. Then.. my FI’s job got all messed around with, and suddenly my dream venue had to be changed. We couldn’t afford it anymore. We actually moved the wedding from Louisiana up to Michigan just because things were cheaper and my family was willing to help out more. I was crushed, but really since the end result will be the same (being married to the love of my life!) its going to be okay. I AM slowing getting super excited for the venue we chose in MI. The whole tone of our wedding changed, but I can make it work. ;)

Oh man, that sucks. I see that your venue DOES NOT say SFV. What happened? Hope you got your money back though.

Oh, beautiful! But, I know where you’re coming from - we had fallen in love with a gorgeous seaside resort before we even were engaged, and when we started planning, just KNEW it was the only place for us. But, then we ran headlong into the depressing reality of the world of the “mandatory minimum headcount” and unchangeable price packages - throw in a clearly mercenary events director who had zero interest in even the slightest hint of originality or negotiation, and we had to let our dream go :( We found a new venue which is certainly lively, but I just can’t get as excited about it. Which, I’ve decided, is fine - what I’m really excited for is just to marry Mr. PP, and I keep reminding myself that that’s really the point! ….right? :)

@misskarianne: Don’t let the change get you down! I had so much trouble getting excited about this wedding for so many reasons, and the change in venue was one of them. Now that we’re only a few weeks away I can tell you that it’s exciting anyway! It will be a beautiful day no matter what!!! Good luck!

@ravmo: Stay tuned! ;)

@ThePinkPeony: It was hard to get excited, and looking at my old venue doesn’t help. I still get that knot in my stomach just looking at the pics. BUT, I decided that no matter where it is, our wedding is gonna be amazing! And I bet yours will too! It’s hard to make the decision to get excited again, especially in the face of disappointment. But it’s going to be a blast! I’m excited for you!

We had our “ideal” venue picked out, contracts ready to go, deposit paid… and then it all fell apart. Even now, over 18months later, I am still bitter to look at the pictures of the grounds, because it was so, SO much more awesome than the venue that we now have.. but we kind of had to suck it up and take the plunge at that point.

Oh my gosh, Saltwater! I looked at that venue when I was searching and it was in my final two in the Mystic/Stonington area. Merrily is so lovely, and gosh the bridal room there is stunning.

I’m certain your wedding is going to be stunning anyway, so niceto have another CT Bee in the house.

Aaawww, Miss Marmalade this post makes me sad. I am glad that you are getting exctied about the wedding. I have been thrown a couple curve balls, that have made me doubt the wedding (not the marriage).

Mine changed too! I had a beautiful historic seaside hotel picked out. My fiance and I loved it. Then the money a relative had kindly offered to give us for the reception fell through. We are already working so hard to make up the financial ground we lost when the money fell through that it wasn’t important to me to give myself an ulcer trying to make the “dream venue” work. I found another seaside hotel that is so beautiful. Because we are getting a ballroom without the view they have thrown in every extra imaginable for gratis. That helped us come to terms with the change. Also, they’ve thrown in a Bentley for our exit for free. My fiance LOVES that lol.

Show us your new venue!!!! I’d like to see you celebrate the new location :) I am sure it will be so beautiful and who knows maybe you can do a vow renewal in 10 years at the vineyard.

This was one of the first places FI and I fell in love with when we were still planning on having our wedding in CT (where I grew up). Such a BEAUTIFUL place. But of course things are always changing and we ended up picking a location in Philadelphia (where we both live). Things always work out for the best!!

Gorgeous! I love Stonington, and would have seriously considered this one if we hadn’t decided to get married in Mystic. (And I love seeing pictures of my neck of the woods! yay for SE CT!)
