An outdoor wedding was something I always envisioned for our wedding day. We spend a lot of our free time outdoors, and my inspiration folders were filled with photos like this:

Deciding to get married outdoors for our September wedding meant that we had to be prepared for possible weather complications.
If you aren’t tied to any specific time of the year to get married but know you want to have it outdoors, research weather patterns in your area and see which months have less chance of rain, more average temperatures, etc.

While August had lower overall rainfall averages, it was obviously going to be way too hot to subject our guests to an outdoor ceremony and tented reception—even if part of the event is in the shade.

Moving into October meant that it might start getting chilly. I am extremely sensitive to the cold, so I don’t want to feel freezing on my wedding day. September it was!
Make sure your venue has a backup in case of rain that you can live with. One venue we looked at was absolutely breathtaking, but their “indoor option” was too small for our expected guest list. I wasn’t willing to take the chance that some people would be left out in the rain (literally!!), so we kept looking.
Our chosen venue, Clark Gardens, had a backup rain plan that we were very comfortable with. The grounds are quite large and can easily host multiple events in the same day. Additionally, they have two permanent tented structures on the property that are available for use for the wedding and/or as a rain backup. They only book a maximum of two weddings on any day so that every single person is covered in the event of inclement weather. Woohoo!
Our reception is taking place inside one of those tents anyway, and doing the ceremony underneath the tent won’t be complicated at all. Some brides just cross their fingers and pray for good weather without a good backup, but I wasn’t willing to have the day be completely different (or in a totally different indoor location) if it were to rain.
When researching venues for an outdoor wedding, always remember to discuss their inclement-weather policy with the event coordinator and make sure it is something you and your SO are comfortable with.
Are you getting married outside? What is your backup plan in case of bad weather?
