About Mrs. High Wire

When we left off, I had given some tips about preparing for your engagement-photo session. Then I promised that I’d explain how I managed to get my makeup to look like this:

Side note: Look at Mr. High Wire’s cute kissy face! I die.

Moving on. It is time for a little tutorial in how to get that retro makeup look you’ve always wanted! Now, this probably isn’t for your everyday look, but for a special occasion or photo shoot? It is the bomb. Dot com.

To get started, here are your tools for success:

Step One: Apply Tinted moisturizer with SPF.

I wear this every single day no matter what. I like that it gives me minimal coverage and a bit of protection from the sun’s rays.

Step Two: Grab your felt-tip eyeliner.

Sorry for the frightening picture below. But here’s what you need to do in order to apply the eyeliner.

Draw a straight line on the top lid from the inner corner all the way out to far beyond the outer edge of the eye. It should look a-something a-like this:

If you draw a straight line while you are pulling the eyelid out like that, it will automatically give you the nice little “wing-tip” curl at the end.

Step Three: Grab your falsies and glue.

You’ll want to apply a thin layer across the base of the lash and then let it dry for 30+ seconds so the glue gets tacky. Be patient.

Once the glue starts to turn a little more translucent, you are ready to apply. (The glue will eventually dry completely clear.)

The best advice I can give you with false eyelashes is to 1) just go for it and stick them on there, and 2) keep practicing. It gets easier.

Once you get them on, you’ll have a few minutes to wiggle and adjust them so they are on perfectly. Here’s my first messed up attempt, which I then fixed until I liked the way it looked.

Then, take your felt-tip eyeliner and go back over the place they are attached to streamline the look and make everything neat and tidy.

And then, voila!

Step Four: Get your skin nice and milky looking by applying your concealor, foundation, and then powder.

Make silly faces.

Step Five: Blush! Apply to the apples of the cheeks ever so gently.

Step Six: Grab your lip liner and fiery red lip stick. Don’t let them intimidate you.

Pull your lips taught and simply draw with your pencil, using the edge of your lips as the lines on a coloring book. Stay inside the lines.

Very attractive, right?

Then, fill in with your matching lipstick. Rub your lips together to evenly distribute the color.

Blot!

Bask in all of your red-lip glory.

Flash a cheeky grin!

Grab your hunky man and amazing photographer and head out into the fields and do this kind of thing:

@Miss Prairie Dog: For this I used Sephora’s felt tip eyeliner

For my everday makeup I use an angle tip brush and black eyeliner, and use a similar method to draw it on. Stays all day and looks great!

LOVED this tutorial! And your eyes are absolutely stunning!

I’ve never tried a felt-tip eyeliner before. *jots down note to buy one*

When you don’t wear falsies, do you wear mascara? What kind?

@Chocolatte: Practice makes perfect! This was the 4th time I applied this type of makeup (3 practice runs and the actual application for the engagement pictures)

@reese: I don’t usually wear mascara because my eyes tear up throughout the day (from staring at a computer screen at work) and it makes a mess. For fancy occassions I usually stick with the old standby - Maybelline Great lash in the pink and green tube.
