Mrs. Marmalade's Picture
Mrs. Marmalade, Norwalk, CT/Raleigh, NC Age and Occupation: 27, Administrative Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Army Officer Engagement Date: December 31, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2011 Venue: Old Cadet Chapel/Highlands Country Club About Me: I'm a Tri-State area "lady," through and through. A big chunk of my life has been split between NYC and Connecticut, and I'm finally heading down south to live with Mr. Marmalade. Our long distance relationship has been one adventure after the next, we've spent time in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and Georgia, thanks to his military career. Next to Mr. Marmalade, my loves include live music, useless trivia, shoes, design, and my crazy half-tiger kitty, Oliver. I have a passion for food and wine, and I've been known to travel long distances to get my hands on the best meals. I come from a tight-knit big fat Greek Ecuadorian family---we're loud, we talk with our hands, and we spend hours talking loudly with our hands over large meals. I'm going to miss them so much as I pack up and begin my life, far away from home. But with Mr. Marmalade by my side, I'm ready to take on whatever may come. Next up: our wedding!

Tasty Possibilities

June 15th, 2011 @ 1:46 pm by Mrs. Marmalade

When we started planning our wedding, there was very little debate about what kind of food we wanted to serve our guests, at least in our little dream world: we wanted a meal that was as delicious as it was fresh. Quintessential summer food. We wanted a lobster bake.

The prospect of finding a caterer was pretty nerve-wracking. Would they laugh at our budget? Criticize our tastes? Get back to us quickly? The first caterer I spoke to was amazing. She did not tell me that our idea was crazy, or too casual, or not right for a wedding. Major bonus points for her right there! Instead, she and I went through the typical lobster bake and made changes where I saw fit. She let me interrupt her repeatedly, which was good because I did that over and over again. She helped me convey what I thought was a fragmented list of demands into an amazing menu.

Let’s take a look at our original menu, shall we?

Instead of a buffet, I wanted a family-style meal with big platters of food being passed around the table. To me, it’s a great way to avoid the formality of a traditionally served meal, without our guests having to mill about a buffet table.

We scrapped the New England clam chowder. Sacrilege, I know. But clam chowder has never really appealed to me in the heat of the summer. Instead of clam chowder, we went with a fresh gazpacho.

Traditional steamers? They were a must! And, of course, some lobstah. We added some chicken for those that don’t eat shellfish, AND red bliss potatoes because I can’t have a meal without potatoes. It just doesn’t happen.

Then there were the sides. Like traditional corn on the cob—no! A girl’s gotta draw the line somewhere. I just couldn’t stand the sight of 100 of our nearest and dearest digging at their teeth with toothpicks. Blegh. So, we decided on a grilled corn salad with black beans and BACON. Because our wedding feast could not have been complete without my favorite pork product.

Of course, none of this was meant to be. Our nontraditional wedding feast wasn’t in the cards for us, at least not for our wedding. But I’ve tucked this away for the future! Anniversary party, maybe?

We are getting married in Maine and had to do a lobster bake! (With choweder though!) We opted to have this for our rehearsal dinner though, that way we can get down and dirty with the bugs and the corn on the cob. Sorry it didn’t work out for you, but can’t wait to see what you ended up with!

Same thing happened to us, part of the problem was that it was going to be more expensive then a regular caterered meal. I was bummed at first but I’m excited for the menu we ended up with!

You are making me sad that I live in the land locked midwest, and we consider catfish to be seafood around here. I would love this! I envy your wedding guests!

If you are having a beach wedding the Lobster Bake would be perfect! I thought about having a beach wedding and having a whole hog roasted and a seafood bake. It would have been alot of fun and memorable for everyone in attendance.

@Miss Cannon: Ok fine. You’re invited. But we probably should get married first.

@Miss Pony: Mmm rehearsal dinner is a good idea! We’ll see what FMIL thinks about that.

@Gerbera: YUM what an amazing bday dinner.

@ericasdreamwedding: YUM that sounds like a blast!

@james79: I’m glad you picked a menu that works. I like I new menu too!

my parents had a lobster/clam bake for their Cape Cod wedding back in 1974! :)
I think they always hoped I’d have a summer wedding on the Cape just so they could do it again

I’m bummed that it won’t work and I’m not even invited - grilled corn, bean, and bacon salad? Delicious! Can’t wait to see what did pan out for you.
