About Mrs. Pony

I Left My Heart in D.C.

June 15th, 2011 @ 5:28 pm by Mrs. Pony

Last week I moved Mr. Pony to our nation’s capital to start a new job. After getting some boxes unpacked and taking an exhilarating ride on the metro, I took a flight back to central Illinois.

I Left My Heart in D.C. : wedding bloomington emotional relationships Dcpostc dcpostc

The 2 Buds

It was bittersweet leaving Mr. Pony in D.C. On one hand, I am so excited for the opportunities and change this move will bring to our lives, but, on the other hand, the next few months are probably going to be extremely difficult for both of us.

Mr. Pony will (understandably) be focused on beginning his new career, while I will be immersed in final preparations and decisions for our wedding, and preparing to move to D.C. soon thereafter. Mr. Pony’s move happened so quickly, I’m not sure the reality of the situation sunk in until after he was gone. Now that I’ve had a few days to process what the next few months will bring, I’m find myself worrying unnecessarily about anything and everything wedding related.

When will we get our marriage license? What happens if something goes wrong with it and Mr. Pony isn’t around to get a new license in time? Why does Mr. P not understand that he has to be present to get our marriage license? Will we have a honeymoon? Will Mr. Pony have vacation time to attend the various wedding events we have planned? Who will keep me from going all Office Space on my Cricut? Do I need to scale back projects? Cut out some projects altogether? Which ones?! Where is my wine (I ask this one a lot)?

See? Lots of worrying (and not enough wine). Right now, I’m taking things one task and one day at a time.

I know there are many brides who plan their entire weddings with their partners far away; whether that be due to jobs, military service, visa issues, or other circumstances. I’m always amazed how these ladies handle themselves and their situations with grace and dignity. I’m just hoping to not go completely crazy, because grace and dignity are not really my strong suits. You’ll keep me in check though, right?

Did you/will you spend time away from your partner during your engagement? Do you have any tips for coping?

My entire engagement has been long distance…heck my entire relationship too! We made the decision to take this journey together, for better or worse…just like marriage! It is tough to do everything on your own, but the day you get married, all that planning alone wont matter anymore! I too worry about the marriage license thing. ;) Im sure you, like me are stronger and craftier and awesome(r) than you give yourself credit..Head up Pony, be strong you can do it!

So sorry you’re having to deal with this; it’s certainly not ideal. It is definitely hard to be (1) away from the one you love and (2) try to plan, craft, etc. on your own. Sometimes, if feel like it’s going great and other times . . . well, I get a glass of wine and throw a pity party! You can definitely do it, though, and the times when you do see each other are so intense and wonderful (except for minor-wedding induced panic attacks). Wine is a good start; from there, just take it one day at a time. I hope it goes by quickly and that the overwhelmed, kind-of-alone feeling subsides soon!

Awwwww, I know how hard it can be having your beloved in another city (even if MINE was only a hour and half away, it still sucked when you had a job, two kids, a mother who thought you were her personal chauffeur…).

Deep breathes, lots of texting/calling/skyping helpes. As does email. and wine… and chocolate ;)

and I giggled at the office space comment… I’ve threatened to do that A LOT with printers….

Man, I have been whining about wine all week. I’m too lazy to go get it - I wish they would just deliver it to me.

Aw, that sucks - I mean, for wedding planning - congrats to Mr. Pony though on the new gig!

@Miss Magic: I KNOW! But if you register for a wine of the month club (we did the WS one), they totally WILL! (though, you still have to uncork it yourself - which is often where it all breaks down for me.

I’m with @arnold palmer. My fiance and I have been together almost 27 months and have spent not even 7 together. You’re very lucky that you’re almost to wedding and moving days. Video chat with each other, send little lovey texts during the day. And don’t obsess about the wedding as a way to fill the time (did that right after we got engaged and he deployed and spent wayyy too much money on magazines lolz). All your planning will work out, so don’t stress. And @Miss Magic, word.

I was in DC and he was in LA the first year of our relationship. It’s hard, but god bless video chatting. How long will you be apart? Once you’re here in DC there are plenty of awesome people to meet and places to see (I’ve lived here for 9 years and I love it!)

just keep focusing on how extra-awesome being reunited as husband and wife will be… those sorts of happy thoughts are what got me through distance parts.

My fiance and I live in different states, 2 1/2 hours apart. That’s not too bad and one or the other of us usually travels to the other on the weekends. But it can get tough. Just text a lot, call every night and visit when you can. You’ll get through it!

well as someone who does two different countries right now and 5 hr time difference, ill tell you that email, skype and aim have been the saving grace. Its hard when he works 8-5 and i work 8-5, so we really have to set time aside to talk and frustrations build easily when a two days go by and we havent got the change to skype. Try and do little things, i usually send an email everyday about my day and how much i love him- its very hard to plan on your own, i miss just hanging out. but stay strong and keep in mind that your wedding is soon and an end is in sight! good luck!

It’ll go fast and then before you know it you’ll be together and married. Just take another sip of wine.

I’d been back and forth with local, long distance, local, living together, long distance again, living together again with my boyfriend for awhile so I understand the anxiety (of course I didn’t have to plan a wedding).

Things will come together. Don’t worry.

Thanks ladies! You definitely give me confidence that things will be bearable for the next three-ish months. You guys are the best! :)
@KCheer: Great advice! Working on both ;)
@arnold palmer: I admire your confidence and strength! Thanks for believing in me too.
@smores: Thanks, it hasn’t been bad yet, but it’s only been a week!
@Ryna: The chocolate helped tonight!
@keah: Ha! I think we can all relate to that feeling every once and a while.
@Miss Magic: Yes! Delivered to me in a glass, chilled if needed, and automatically refilling, please.
@ThePinkPeony: Thanks for the congrats! We’re excited for the job!
@Future Army Wife: Wow, I can’t imagine, truly admirable.
@ebmarshall: About 3-4 months. I’m super excited to move to DC! Talk about a change from central IL!
@Miss Snow Cone: Very good point! I’m going to remember that when I get stressed/overwhelmed.
@coasterkim: 2.5 hours is still too far when it is your other half. You’ll get through it too.
@chelseaRichard: I like your idea of small surprises, just to keep him knowing I’m thinking of him. Thanks!
@mariewest: That’s a lot of change in one relationship. If you can make it through all of that, there’s no doubt you’ll have a successful marriage (once you get engaged).

This has got to be tough, Pony but I think you’ve got an excellent attitude about it all! A whole new awesome (married) life in DC awaits you and only a few short months are keeping you from it. In the meantime, Dr. Seal prescribes lots and lots of wine ;) (Oh and I loved the “going ‘Office Space’ on your Cricut imagery”…heheh, cracked me up!)

It’s crazy how after the fact things hit a person. I almost lost my husband this past weekend and it’s only now hitting me how close he came to death.
