Miss Sweet Cream's Picture
Miss Sweet Cream, Philadelphia Age and Occupation: 26, Public Relations Account Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Outside Sales Engagement Date: July 4, 2010 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church / Rosebank Winery About Me: Born in the ‘burbs of Philly, it took some time living in the Big Apple to realize that I’m a girl who likes her roots. That’s why the mister and I bought a 1950s house on a charming street not too far from our childhood stompin’ grounds. This could also be the reason why our hometown is the scene where we are planning our super sweet, totally charming, BBQ-for-supper wedding that I never knew I always wanted. I DIE over DIY projects and live for vintage, heartfelt inspiration. I obsess over all things mid-century (from forks to furniture). Love is… cartoons and flea markets, and I am known to whip up a mean banana cream pie. I met the Mr. in grade school and after that boy took me for a spin on the handle bars of his BMX, I knew that things would never be the same again. Besides lovin’ my Mr., I also love to plan, sew and create, and that’s just what I’m doing as I navigate through the details, creating a laid-back day that oozes charm; one that will go down in (at least our) history as the Best. Day. Of all time.
About Miss Sweet Cream

Our song is the slamming screen door, sneakin’ out late, tapping on your window…When we’re on the phone and you talk real slow ’cause it’s late and your mama don’t know. Oh wait. That isn’t OUR song!  That’s T. Swift’s song with one of her many beaus.

As for our song, that is TBD.

There’s a funny thing about first songs. I don’t know if it’s just couples nowadays who put so much darn thought into it. Maybe its just us detailed bees?

I remember Freddie Prinze, Jr. and Julia Stiles listening to records and putting so much thought into what “their” song was in the horrible movie—even though I loved it—Down to You. And they were only dating for a few months.

Video via YouTube

Even though it seems perfectly romantic to be skimming vinyl and sitting Indian style…this somehow isn’t realistically how Mr. Sweet Cream and I are picking our song…

Mama and Papa Sweets had a first song picked out—but on the wedding day the band couldn’t remember how to play the song. So what did they wind up with as “their” song? Elvis’s “Can’t Help Falling In Love.” It must have been the times, because that is also the song of not one, but two, of my friends’ parents who all got married in the ’70s.

I do like that song—especially the Ingrid Michaelson version. But the original is great, too. No debates here. It’s definitely on our playlist.

Ingrid Michaelson’s version makes me think of real-life, can’t-live-without-you true love.

I digress. Our real “song” from many, many moons ago is Aerosmith’s “Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing.” Am I dating myself?

Video via YouTube

Fast forward 15 years…that isn’t a song we really want for our song.

So now, I’d love share with the hive some of my top choices. I preface these by saying that Mr. Sweet Cream liked all of them until I excitedly said, “OK, Mr. Sweets. So this is our song?!?”

A hesitated shuffling of the feet and a cockeyed squinty look told me no, in fact, it wouldn’t be. Don’t worry, bees. I asked him what his choices are. He said that he would have to think about it, but he hasn’t come up with much. (Although nothing is better than Papa Sweet Cream wanting to dance to a Jimi Hendrix song for our dad/daughter dance. He doesn’t know which one…he just loves Jimi Hendrix and Led Zep. And bees, the man don’t dance!!)

Just for fun—let me run through the list of could-have-beens for our first song as man and wife:

Otis Redding / “That’s How Strong My Love Is” / I just love the lyrics to this tune.

Jason Mraz & Colbie Caillat / “Lucky” / What a sweet duet!

Natasha Beddingfeld / “Love Like This” / This was almost going to be it! Mr. Sweet Cream loved the lyrics…but for whatever reason, he changed his mind.

Cat Power / “Sea of Love” / Sigh. How can you not like this?

I actually wound up finding an amazing song—actually from the Weddingbee Boards—that is the top runner as we speak. At first Mr. Sweets wasn’t so sure about it…but after playing it 45+ times as he was working around the house, I think it may have grown on him. I really do think he likes it now!

Joss Stone & Common / “What We Gonna Do Now”

The lyrics are great! We both like that it’s a little peppy so we are not stuck into a standard sway. We can have some fun! But would we prefer something a little more classic? I don’t know the answer to that one quite yet.

Did you and your FI agree right away on “your” song? Did you have “a song” already but want a new one for your wedding day? How did you decide? What were your top contenders?

Also: Are you following Freddie Prinze, Jr.’s movie-mom’s advice and going for something timeless and classic, or do think that something that represents “you” (as a couple) is much more important?

I actually had my very first bridal breakdown while discussing this topic with FI less than a week after getting engaged. We were driving somewhere and he was playing possible contenders on his iPod. The problem was they were all songs he alread had… the problem with this is that we are VERY different in our taste in music. So after maybe 7-8 songs, I burst into tears about how horrible our wedding will be and we’ll NEVER be able to find a song both of us love.

We ended up with “Lucky” but it took quite a while. :-P

Our song is “1234″ by the Plain White T’s. It happened cuz I saw them perform one day on OLTL, and the song just stayed in my mind (and this was before I had even MET my guy). Then, after we’d been dating for not very long at all, I didn’t want to say the words “I love you” to him, but the lyrics to this song fit us so completely, so I told him about it, and ended up emailing him the link to the youtube video after he had gone back to his city (we’re long-distance). He thought it fit to, so it’s been our song ever since. And we still love that song and can’t wait to hear it on our wedding, though I’m not sure whether I’ll process to it or use it for our first dance. :-)

I’m all for a non-traditional song. We didn’t really have a song and had to talk through several choices until we found something we were both happy with. We had a friend add a few moves (nothing over the top) so we wouldn’t just spin and sway… it was a huge hit! We had a great time learning the moves (which really made it our song) and our friends and family loved watching us shake our stuff. My advice, whatever you choose, is just to have fun with it. It makes it personal and more memorable for everyone involved.

We’re both big fans of music and films from the ’40’s and ’30’s so at first we looked at some Sinatra songs (FI really loves Sinatra). Then one night after a lot of batting my eyelashes I was able to get him to watch Casablanca with me. Since then he only wants to have “As Time Goes By” by Dooley Wilson as our song. I love that song too so no complaints from me!

We don’t have a dating song or a first dance song picked out, but we know we want something upbeat and fun!

When we were dating, my FI sent me a song from Hawai’i (where he was vacationing at the time) that said it described just how he felt, “God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys–we’re thinking of that (which I LOVE) or “At Last” by Etta James, which I know is oft-used, but it describes us perfectly. So I guess we’re the classic variety.

We do not have a “song” from dating and we both varying a lot in musical tastes so this was tough for us. The one genre we agree on is old school jazzy stuff, like Otis Redding. We used You Tube a lot and found the perfect song for us - The Very Thought of You by Etta James. Finally something we could both agree upon! Our last dance, well that’s another story…

SO and I have been dating 4 1/2 years and we still don’t have a song that is ours. I have no idea what will be our first dance song.

Our first dance song was “Everything” by Michael Buble. We hadn’t really discussed it yet, but I heard it one night on the radio and knew that was it. When I played it for my then-FI, he thought it fit us perfectly as well. Go with what fits you the best, whether people know the song or not. It’s YOUR song. Good luck!

“Our” song is Killing in the Name by Rage Against the Machine. It’s the first song we danced to when we met, it’s one of our favourites and we love dancing to it in clubs.

This is somewhat unfortunate.

The FH claims he wants to have it as our first dance but I am not headbanging in a wedding dress in front of all my family. Never going to happen.

So we have to think of a new one, too.

ACK! I was OBSESSED with Down to You (shush. It was college, not my finest hour in terms of, you know, taste.)

As for our song - pretty much the same boat. Our dating song is “Manhattan” by Kings of Leon which - I mean, LOVE, but not exactly first-dance appropriate - so we enlisted a music-savvy friend to suggest a list of less-used but still “traditional”-sounding songs, and are working our way through them.

Whatever happened to Julia Stiles? I haven’t seen her in anything in forever.

Anyway, I knew exactly what song we would use, and I knew exactly what song Mr. Cannon would want to use. We’re using his for our entrance song since it’s not one you can really dance to and using mine for the first dance. (We both like both songs, so we just used them when they were most appropriate.)

And the Aerosmith song- yeesh. I hope you at least play it during the reception for fun times, though!

We did Frank Sinatra - I know so traditional, right?! But we both love that era…

We have not finalized the song yet, but I want a song that is popular enough that we can request it almost anywhere and it will be played. Maybe it will be an oldie but a goodie, and that’s fine with me so long as we can dance into our twilight years to it:)

We had an entire playlist of potential first dance songs, and it took a while to whittle it down to one that spoke to both of us!

I think ours in going to be “Dancing in the Moonlight” by Thin Lizzy. Definitely not a slow and romantic song, but it’s the one we regularly kill ourselves laughing to as we boogey around the living-room. Plus, I think we like the idea of surprising people by not having a traditional love song. (even though I still think it’s a sort-of love song).

Ummm…. hello… I LOVED “Down to You” and that scene in particular. Our first dance song is (I THINK) going to actually be our song, which is Queen’s Your My Best Friend.
