Miss Sweet Cream's Picture
Miss Sweet Cream, Philadelphia Age and Occupation: 26, Public Relations Account Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Outside Sales Engagement Date: July 4, 2010 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church / Rosebank Winery About Me: Born in the ‘burbs of Philly, it took some time living in the Big Apple to realize that I’m a girl who likes her roots. That’s why the mister and I bought a 1950s house on a charming street not too far from our childhood stompin’ grounds. This could also be the reason why our hometown is the scene where we are planning our super sweet, totally charming, BBQ-for-supper wedding that I never knew I always wanted. I DIE over DIY projects and live for vintage, heartfelt inspiration. I obsess over all things mid-century (from forks to furniture). Love is… cartoons and flea markets, and I am known to whip up a mean banana cream pie. I met the Mr. in grade school and after that boy took me for a spin on the handle bars of his BMX, I knew that things would never be the same again. Besides lovin’ my Mr., I also love to plan, sew and create, and that’s just what I’m doing as I navigate through the details, creating a laid-back day that oozes charm; one that will go down in (at least our) history as the Best. Day. Of all time.
About Miss Sweet Cream

Registering for gifts is like a grownup version of a dream Christmas list. When else do you get to single-handedly handpick what you want to be gifted for a party where you are the guest of honor?? So while BM Sweet Cream shrieked with glee after hearing that Mr. Sweets and I were going to register, I wasn’t that thrilled inside.

Why the crazy talk, you ask?

Because Mr. Sweet Cream and I were up against Mission Impossible.

Mr. Sweet Cream and I hopefully didn’t look as crazy as Tom and Keri zapping barcodes…although we might have felt this way. / Image via StarDustTrailers

I’m sure that many of you bees may be cohabitating like Mr. Sweets and me. We originally didn’t plan it that way—but that’s a story for a different day, different post.

So we have tons of things that we would have registered for but we already bought ourselves. Like our Dyson that we found on clearance at Target after the vacuum we originally got from a secondhand shop died after it ate way too many of our Christmas tree needles. And our grill that we had to get to kick off last summer.

But the bigger problem? I am a mid-century-antiquing junkie. So years before the Sweets bought their first home, there were boxes and boxes of dishware, serving pieces, glasses, coffee cups, bakeware, gadgets, and gizmos—all created between World War II and the era of Gloria Steinem—up in Mama and Papa Sweet Cream’s attic. Think of it as a hope chest on steroids.

So I already have my fair share of Salem North Star plates:

And this is my favorite pattern of all my bowls and casseroles.

I have a mixed collection of real silverware from the 20th century that I love and a whole buffet full of serving pieces. So with two things up against us (cohabitating and said addiction to mid-century kitchen items—heck, all mid-century items, to tell you the truth!), Mr. Sweet Cream and I began to think about what we could register for.

We hung a piece of loose leaf on the side of the refrigerator, and as we realized something we could use, we would jot it down. Although it happened slowly—a full set of stainless steel pots and pans here, a 10-cup food processor there—it got easier when we visited the store. With guns in hand we said “YES!” to a folding banquet table that we realized we would need for hosting sit-down dinner holidays with our two families. We gave high fives to each other after finding the patio furniture that we lusted after and immediately took aim at the bar code. We started figuring out things that we could use, in all price ranges for all of our guests.

Throughout our registering at Target, Home Depot, and Kohl’s, we registered for great things, including:

  • A smoker
  • New sheets
  • Tons of brand new bath towels
  • A pizza stone
  • Grill accessories
  • A Brita water filter
  • 16 mini-dessert shot glasses
  • A heating lamp for outside
  • A collapsable grill for tailgating (Go Phillies!)
  • Massaging shower head
  • Great new doormats for outside
  • A new mailbox
  • A ceiling fan for our bedroom
  • Etc., etc., etc.

I was insistent on not letting that gun own us and not giving in to a desire to zap everything and anything in sight. I wanted us to think of the suggestions for our guests as if we would really buy them.

And while I would love to register somewhere like Amazon, knowing our guest list, I don’t know how many people would use it. I know that a lot of bees register for their honeymoons, which is a great idea, but we aren’t going through a travel agent.

I am going to try not to cheat and look at what is bought in the days that lead up to my shower. I love a surprise, so I think I’ll be good.

Did you have a hard time thinking about what to register for? Did your cohabitating lead you to have needs and wants already crossed off? What is your top registry item that you are hoping you get at your shower? Did you register somewhere out of the ordinary—like a sporting-goods store or favorite charity?

[NOTE to brides near a Kohl’s: Although not a typical store for wedding registries, they had a ton of kitchen appliances we needed---and they are giving our guests 15% off our gifts! So it's like they are giving our guests a gift (of a discount) for buying us gifts! Very nice, Kohl’s! Very nice!]

You know I am not a big Kohl’s shopper, but we registered there anyway, and you are so right. They had TONS of kitchen and home stuff, everything is almost always on sale and you rarely pay full price. I know they have tons of coupons for people who have their credit card too.

We registered there, Target, and Macy’s. I was shocked that the most gifts we got came from Kohl’s. Almost everything on our registry!

We’re registered at Kohl’s! They also have 15% off for registry completion if you want to go scoop up anything left on your registry after you get married :)

I love the mid century collection! We’re hoping to amass a collection of Jadeite to use for our future kitchen. If we could register for it, I totally would ;)

YAY Phillies! I might have to go add a collapsible grill on to our registry! Thanks a lot Miss SC =P Also, may I suggest a Kitchen Aid mixer if you don’t have one already!? It was the item I most wanted going into the shower. I am so happy that my nice FFIL bought it for us! Well after the shower, I may or may not have added the ice cream maker attachment on to our registry =P- Seriously, the mixer is the gift that keeps on giving! It has a bazillion attachments for all of your cooking/baking needs! Check it out if you haven’t already!

Leaving the shower though, while I love my Kitchen Aid, my favorite gifts were things that I def. did not expect and came from the heart more so than a store! My Aunt embroidered and added cute patterned fabric on to a few sets of Martha Stewart kitchen towels. She also made me an apron! My grandfather passed away in 2006 and my other Aunt bought me a lenox vase and resting spoon that she said my Grandpop would have gotten for me if he were still with us. It was so sweet. Now both sit in our apartment and make me smile everyday knowing he is that much closer everyday. Lastly, my Grandmom who has been married to my other Granddad for 59 years, gave me her cake topper to use at the wedding. She is also looking for her garter which is blue to give me!

Well, I hope you get everything you want at your shower!!! And again, GO PHILS! (yeah, yeah- stereotypical annoying Philadelphia sports fan here haha)

We co-habitated for years before getting married, so finding things to register for was a challenge! Checking the “gift card” option turned out to be a great decision, too.

Registering was hard for us because I work for Pottery Barn, hence I have a 40% discount there and at Williams Sonoma. So for guest to buy us stuff from there would be silly. We set up a honeymoon registry through honeyfund.com. You don’t have to go through a travel agent, people just contribute and send you a check or use pay pal or give cash.

I’m another one that collects kitchen stuff. I have also lived on my own or with him for almost 7 years now. We kinda don’t need stuff. But then I started to look at found some things that are nice to have. We went through Myregistry.com because they allow you pick from multiple places and items can be marked off even if they weren’t purchased at the suggested site. That way, people can get a variety of things at the best prices. They also allow you to register for cash gifts like honeymoon or home fund.

I will agree, however, that the best gifts are the ones you didn’t ask for.

Here’s what we did:

I used Macy’s, Kohl’s and Bed Bath and Beyond. Most of my shower stuff came from Kohl’s. They are great for kitchen appliances, towels and other small items.

Yay, for Kohl’s brides! ;)

@kmnowlan - I TOTALLY registered for a Kitchenaid mixer. I wanted to just eventually find my dream “vintage” one, but my mom convinced me that the new ones have a ton of great attachments — BUT I DID NOT KNOW about this ice cream mixer! Hello!! We LOVE ice cream! Thanks for the heads up! PS - Go Phils! ;)

@HighWire - Thanks for the heads up!

@xtatic1 - I am OH SO envious! 40% discount at WS & PB?!?!? I would KILL for that!!! Note to self: must apply to Pottery Barn and make time to fit in a part time job there!!

@Margarita - Aren’t they SOO cute! I really, really want them immediately!!
