The Organic Registry

June 16th, 2011 @ 5:13 pm by Mrs. High Wire

I’m a big believer that your registries are something that you absolutely need to keep an eye on. I know Miss Bunting feels me on that one! We’ve worked very hard on our registry and continue to adjust as necessary. I don’t know if I would go so far as to call it “living and breathing,” but it definitely is something that will need little changes and adjustments as you go, depending on your circumstances.

I don’t consider it stalking, really, since I feel you need to make sure that there is always something at multiple price points for your guests, and if someone comes along and scoops up all of the items that are less than $100, the rest of your guests will be forced to spend at least $100+ if they want to buy something on your registry.

I’ll be honest, registering in the stores was pretty lame. It was one of the wedding activities I was looking forward to, so it was pretty disappointing. I only wanted to hit the stores for the things I really wanted to touch and feel: towels and linens. Even though we had a slimmed down list of things to add in-store, it was still really hard to keep Mr. High Wire interested. Additionally, the scanner gun kept dying even though I called in advance to make an appointment and make sure they charged the gun for us. The associates had trouble linking our online registries to the scanner gun as well. It just wasn’t a very pleasant experience.

Ninety-nine percent of the work on our registries has been done online. I even set them up online before we trekked into the stores. It is so much easier to choose items, since almost everything has a list of reviews attached to it and you know which is really a bargain or broken within its first uses.

I had been working on the registries little by little over time and finally felt that they were nearly ready for “viewing” with the approaching wedding showers. I knew how much room we had in our two-bedroom apartment and made sure not to overload it with stuff that we couldn’t use or wouldn’t fit.

However, we put a little wrench into things when we did something a little unexpected:

We bought a house.

It was a Thursday afternoon that we agreed to at least consider buying, with interest rates what they are (i.e., super low). Four days later, after finding a perfect home for sale, we put in an offer. It was accepted the next day. It was a complete whirlwind! We closed on the house a few weeks later.

Suddenly, we had a new amount of kitchen storage, different color paint on the walls, a backyard, and one shower with a glass door so we wouldn’t need one of those shower curtains on our registry. (But I love them both! Which one do I delete?) Our comfortable little complete registries had to be overhauled to accommodate our totally new living quarters.

Did you have to make changes to your registries after you set them up? Anyone else juggling any other major changes in addition to getting married?

I’ve also spent a lot of time online selecting and reviewing items… so now only towels and linens are left!
Congratulations on the house!

Congrats on the new home, that’s super exciting! We’re reevaluating our registry since we’ll be living in a teeny tiny apartment after the wedding.

Congratulations! We had to re-vamp our hole registry too! We bought our house a year and a hlaf into our engagement. Once we moved in, I had way more fun with the registry. It definitely made me think of longer term items.

I’d say keep both shower curtains on the registry. That way you can swap them out if/when you get bored. And as far as the paint color goes, that’s just about as easy to change as redoing the whole registry, so if you really love what you registered for (with a different color scheme in mind) just bust out the paint brushes! Congrats on the house!

Congrats on the new home! Very exciting! (And I still am amazed at the life changes that many of you have undergone during planning - moving across country, getting new pets, buying/selling homes - it exhausts me just thinking about it! My head might have exploded if anything like that happened during wedding planning. What can I say? I like things simple.)

@KCheer: I totally agree - one major life change at a time, thank you!

Congrats on the new home! I have to say I very happy we waited until after our wedding to begin the process of buying a place :)
