Cake On the Brain

June 17th, 2011 @ 4:55 pm by Ms. Ferris Wheel

I l-o-v-e me some cake. Seriously, I’ve rarely met a cake I didn’t want to introduce to my belly. (Except carrot cake. Why ruin a perfectly good cake with veggies? I just don’t get it.) Combine my love of cake with my love of aesthetically pleasing things and anybody could guess that I flat-out-faint for wedding cakes. Oh how I would love to feature one of these works of art at our wedding.

That said, I just can’t get over what I hear is the Bay Area average of $7/slice for such a masterpiece. At ~100 servings, we’re looking at 700 smackaroos for one cake. Yes, it would be an awesome cake, but it’s still just one cake. For a woman who loves cake, I can think of better ways to spend $700 on cake—like by purchasing more cake! I got the idea from images like this.

Freaking ingenious! What better way to honor my (clearly unhealthy, but whatevs) love of cake than to serve our guests not one cake, but lots and lots of cakes—plural! Plus I could probably do it for significantly less than $700, especially if some of those cakes were baked with love by myself and others.

The dilemma, though, is how to get the *aesthetically pleasing* part back. Clearly I need some way to link the cakes to our wedding “theme” and find a way to make it a focal point. We’re working on creating a cool backdrop for the buffet table, so we’ll have that. But those cakes need to sit on something. In my heart of hearts I imagine using cake stands like these.

In my wallet of wallets I imagine we’ll end up with something like this.

Never one to be deterred from a seemingly impossible task, I turned to the interwebz and found some brilliant ideas here, here, and here. BTW, you people out there generating these ideas and posting these tutorials—you rock my world!

Although I love the idea of doing all-black stands, I am a little (unnecessarily?) freaked out by the idea of spray painting something and then eating a cake off of it. I don’t tend to be a person who’s overly cautious about that type of stuff, but it does worry me a little and I do have some overly cautious friends. So maybe it’s best not to eff around with that. But how wonderful to get inspiration for all the different items you can use for either the plate part or the pedestal part! I’m particularly digging that last tutorial, because I can just imagine this cake stand painted black instead of yellow - with that awesome pop of white at the top - it’s fabulous!

I went around to some stores crazily snapping pictures of every potential cake-standy option. (It was either that or buy a carload of stuff and then return it all later. I think I made the right decision.) Then I came home to click through the pictures and try to figure out which option would be best for us (also known as ruminating myself to death). But eventually I did make a choice, and it’s a pretty fabulous one. I’ll post about it soon, I promise!

Would you ever be crazy/smart enough to try and bake desserts for the guests at your wedding? If so, any tips on how you plan to do it and keep your sanity?

We are getting married in downtown SF also and I am currently in wedding cake hell also! How funny that I picked the exact same “inspiration” picture with the anemones and ivory and black piping!
I also considered the cake buffet option but decided against it because our venue is including dessert (choc covered strawberries) and favors are cookies, PLUS it is such a small room that there really isn’t room for a cake buffet. So, I am still without a baker and the wedding is at the end of july! If you find one reasonably priced, please pass on the info!

Everything is more expensive when its called a wedding anything lol what if you told a baker you needed however many co-ordinating color birthday cakes , then they all match and you will probably get them for a much more reasonable price?

I just bought a cupcake stand for a party and spray painted it black, had no issues, i don’t think you would want to put the cakes directly on the stand put perhaps on a cardboard circle that would be covered by the cake.

You can totally bake desserts for your wedding! I plan to do something (but nothing that has to look good), it’s all about planning.
Oh, and I love the multiple cake look!

Ugh I hate how expensive wedding cakes are- our solution to the problem was to pick a cake that we love and we are having it made to serve 75 people- then we had them bake a sheet cake that will be cut up and served in the back to feed the other 75. My baker says this is very common and no one can tell the difference once it’s cut up :)

I’m doing the dessert stands for our wedding in September and I LOVE it! Super easy DIY. We’re having a dessert bar instead of just one cake and cookies because my SO and I (well, just me really!) are huge fans of dessert. So we’ll be having cupcakes, assorted cookies, brownies, PB fudge and various candies.

I’ve enlisted various friends and tasked them with baking 4 dozen cookies each, which can be frozen ahead of time. A neighbor is making her amazing PB fudge. And my mother will be in town the Thursday before to help me bake a few pies. And SO is in charge of the candy.

I agree with Miss Feather about just asking for a regular cake. A friend got married and had a local grocery store bake several cakes and asked if they would attach the decorations to the cakes. The store bakery said they would be happy to AND gave them a discount on the cakes. It’s not fancy flavors, just plain chocolate, vanilla or marble but the frosting can be colored or embellished to match your theme.

@Miss MamaBee: Mmm… chocolate covered strawberries! We’re trying to find someone to make a single, small decorative cake and I’ll definitely post about it if we find someone who’s reasonably priced. Otherwise we’re gonna try to make the other cakes/desserts on our own. Eek!

@Miss Feather: Yeah, I think we’ll definitely consider having at least 1 or 2 store bought cakes, just to give ourselves some breathing room.

@Miss Candy Apple: Great minds… :-)

@Emma: I think I might just do that. Thanks!

@Miss Pony: I hope you’re right! Can’t wait to hear how that works out for you!

@tea: Right?!

@Miss Marine: We definitely considered that as an option, for sure. And I just recently learned first-hand that Costco makes a delicious sheet cake!

@Carrie @ Half Baked: My pleasure! Congrats on creating such a gorgeous cake!

@Lisa: It just occured to me that I shouldn’t call it a cake buffet because, although we plan to have multiple cakes, we also plan to include other types of desserts - probably much like what you’re doing. Hopefully I can enlist the help of some friends/family as well!

@Mrs. Pain au Chocolat: Really??? I thought maybe I’d seen it somewhere else around here, but I couldn’t remember where. I LOVE that cake, but I just couldn’t convince Mr. FW to love it. Oh, now I’m busting at the seams waiting to see how yours turned out!!!! So jealous!

@Ms. Ferris Wheel: I think it’ll be ace. I can’t bake at all (I get too impatient and I keep looking in the oven) so it’s partly laziness, but mostly that I’m hoping people will enjoy contributing.

My husband baked the cakes for our wedding! Traditional English wedding cake (which is fruitcake), red velvet cake, and two vegan chocolate cakes for the vegan guests. It was stressful though, especially the morning of, when he was rushing to frost the red velvet cakes and get them to the site. But they were delicious, very personal, and not only much cheaper than any local baker — I don’t think anyone here could have done the English wedding cake.
