About Mrs. Macarons

Om Nom Nom!

June 17th, 2011 @ 12:37 pm by Mrs. Macarons

Since I already discussed food, this has to be about cake! Finding a baker was a bit of a struggle. Mr. Macs has a sweet tooth, but most American cakes turn his stomach. Too much sugar + too much frosting = two bites tops and he’s done. Any other time I’ve come to terms with it, but this was our wedding cake. I wanted him to enjoy it as much as our guests. I can’t tell you how many weddings and parties I’ve been to where so much cake is wasted. This was something we DID NOT want to happen, especially once I found out how ridiculously expensive cakes can be.

Yes, that’s indeed me at a friend’s wedding. I couldn’t help myself before helping them package it up.

In addition to tasting great, it had to look amazing. We wanted something special and different but hoped it wouldn’t double the cost. After getting quotes from a few bakers, our wallet pretty much dictated the following options:

Or this:

They were cute, but didn’t have the wow factor. We were in cake limbo until I found this:

In the words of Rachel Zoe, OMG I DIE. This was our design. OK, so the hand-painted lavender might be a tad time consuming, but it can’t drive up the cost that much, right?

At this point I have to give a shout out to Mrs. Buttons. Without her cake tasting I never would have ended up contacting Nomeda. Her samples were oh so yummy, it was hard to narrow it down. We finally decided on three tiers consisting of raspberry creme, hummingbird, and amaretto.

Nomeda was so excited about our design. She had never seen anything like it before and even suggested adding a few three-dimensional sprigs of lavender as she had the “perfect mold” for it. When Mrs. Buttons said Nomeda was reasonable, I wasn’t expecting grocery-store reasonable. You heard me—for less than the cost of a comparable wedding cake from Publix, we could get TWO. What’s the second cake? You’ll just have to wait.

The lavender cake is so pretty! Oh fyi, that’s Russell Crowe, not Gerard Butler…sorry I was a huge Gladiator fan!

@JenniferG: Funny name right? It’s sort of like a spice/carrot cake but with bananas, pineapple and nuts.
