Fun with Flowers

June 17th, 2011 @ 3:51 pm by Mrs. Cannon

I enjoy flowers, but I don’t think I fall into the “I LOVE flowers” camp—at least not with wedding flowers. The area around our duplex is gorgeously landscaped with flowers and many flowering trees and bushes, and it makes me happy. When Mr. Cannon picks up a bouquet for me, I love it. Daffodils in the spring bring true joy to my heart. So yeah, I like flowers and think they’re pretty. However, in the context of wedding planning, I find them to be pretty boring.

Whenever I read posts from other brides drooling over bouquets and centerpieces, I confess that I just don’t get it. To be honest, I usually skip flower posts because, even though they’re pretty, I just don’t think they’re interesting. There’s nothing wrong with going gaga over flowers, it’s just not my thing. And thrifty me, I just can’t imagine spending crazy money on something I don’t really care about.

Don’t worry, I didn’t write an entire post on this for nothing! I still think bouquets and centerpieces should have a place in our wedding. And I did find some awesome inspiration—paper flowers! I absolutely adore the look. They can be done in so many ways, but my favorite is bright (obviously), modern, and fun. I won’t have to feel sad watching them die a slow death! And they’re so pretty! And cheap! I began to wonder why everyone doesn’t have paper flowers at their wedding. And then I started making them.

Don’t get me wrong—I think they’re turning out awesome, but I didn’t expect them to be half as time consuming as they are. So, if you’re thinking about going the paper route, my advice is to get started as soon as possible. In the next post I’ll let you in on my technique and how I got my decidedly uncrafty fiance to help with them.

I’m doing paper flowers too. All spiral roses, like the roses in the bookwormeatsflowers bouquet. Estimating about 1500. Ugh.

I love that second bouquet, it’s so fun! Hopefully you and Mr. Cannon can tag team this thing and get them all done!

I handmade 6 crepe paper and fabric flower bouquets for our wedding… OMG did I take forever, but I loved them so so much! Well worth the time and effort.

I’m not a wedding flower person either, but although I like crafts I don’t know if I’m that crafty to create anything that pretty. Looking forward to seeing how yours turned out (and how you did it).

We did paper flowers! Yes they were time consuming but I LOVE that I get to keep my bouquet and the girls got to keep theirs… it was SO us!

I feel about paper flowers the way you do about real flowers. Don’t get them, don’t understand why anyone likes them.

YES!!! I want paper flowers too!! Prices for real flowers for a wedding, especially roses, are artificially inflated for something that will end up in the compost. With paper flowers, you can reuse and recycle!!

ahahaha, the old adage of “time = money”! I didn’t have time to do paper flowers, which seemed like a perfectly reasonable, whimsical project to undertake.

We did all “non real” flowers (paper, clay, fabric) and YES they were so time consuming but the fact that I still have my bouquet in my desk is pretty awesome to me =] And I still have prob. 50% of all the flowers all the others were taken by guest at our wedding witch was pretty cool =]
