Mrs. Marmalade's Picture
Mrs. Marmalade, Norwalk, CT/Raleigh, NC Age and Occupation: 27, Administrative Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Army Officer Engagement Date: December 31, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2011 Venue: Old Cadet Chapel/Highlands Country Club About Me: I'm a Tri-State area "lady," through and through. A big chunk of my life has been split between NYC and Connecticut, and I'm finally heading down south to live with Mr. Marmalade. Our long distance relationship has been one adventure after the next, we've spent time in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and Georgia, thanks to his military career. Next to Mr. Marmalade, my loves include live music, useless trivia, shoes, design, and my crazy half-tiger kitty, Oliver. I have a passion for food and wine, and I've been known to travel long distances to get my hands on the best meals. I come from a tight-knit big fat Greek Ecuadorian family---we're loud, we talk with our hands, and we spend hours talking loudly with our hands over large meals. I'm going to miss them so much as I pack up and begin my life, far away from home. But with Mr. Marmalade by my side, I'm ready to take on whatever may come. Next up: our wedding!

Grow with Love

June 18th, 2011 @ 6:55 pm by Mrs. Marmalade

One of the most common questions about my wedding-day look has been about my hair. People keep asking me if I am planning to grow my hair out. Are they trying to tell me something?

I hadn’t thought about it too much before the questions started coming, but I realized that, yes, I’d probably have to grow it out since I had no idea what I wanted to look like on my wedding day!

But I didn’t really want to grow my bangs out. If you’ve ever worn bangs, you already know that growing them out is a difficult proposition filled with many, many awkward hair phases.

Here I am a couple months ago. BM Lil $is gets full credit for this one.

Try and try as hard as I could, I just couldn’t quit those babies! I felt more like me with a little fringe hanging over my brows. And why not? They’re cool and classic.

(There you go: definitive proof as far as I’m concerned.)

My relationship with bangs has been hot and cold my whole life. It all started when I begged my mom to cut them for me and she refused. So at the ripe age of seven, I took matters into my own hands and had the world’s shortest bangs for a while and I loved them! I’ve had some kind of fringe ever since! Not to worry—these days I leave the fringe for the professionals (except for that one time, right around my 25th birthday *shudder*). Live and learn. But do I want to rock bangs on our wedding day? Mmm…I don’t think so.

As much as I loved my bangs, I wanted to see what I looked like without them—it had been so long! And yet I cut them again and again and again. Finally, I went four whole months without a trim and my poor forehead felt nekkid.

I’ve finally made some progress. My winter was dedicated to fug: big sweaters, super pale skin (daily sunscreen = pale Miss M), and bobby pins galore to let my fringe grow. That “sacrifice” has led to some growth! It’s not much progress, but it’s pretty good!

If I can control myself until the wedding, I may end up with a style sans bangs!

Are you going to be sporting “bridal bangs?” Or did you grow them out?

Nothing wrong with bangs for the wedding if that is what you are use to.

I think the picture of the girl with dark hair (call me stupid, because I have no idea who she is) looks AWESOME! So if you cave and cut them, I think something like that would be awesome!

I tried, but like every other bang grow-out attempt in my almost 40 years on this planet, I failed miserably. I never can see this plan through. I always give in and chop! So I had bangs on my wedding day. I satisfied my need for change by having my stylist cut them a bit differently at least, for the wedding.

I went the other way. I have been without bangs for many years now and I decided I wanted to bring some back (2 months before my wedding..crazy right?) Not willing to go too crazy, I went with a long, side-swept bang that can still tuck behind my ear if need be. We always want what we don’t have!

I was never a bang girl. However, the FI was deployed on Valentine’s day and the lonely indulgences led me to treating myself to a fancy haircut and some fancy fringe. I’ve been trying to grow it out since then. Thank God for bobby pins!

I have an enormous, wide forehead. currently, I have “faux bangs” — long bangs that swoop across the forehead like a swag and tuck behind the ear. it’s a good look if you don’t want bangs but need to cover the forehead. however, they look a little bit flatter than real bangs.

I’ll keep them though. when I had shorter bangs, they would look bad whenever the wind blew them out of place (which is like, every time I step outside), and I also looked crazy when I woke up in the morning.

so although my faux bangs might be flatter than real bangs, it’s worth it whenever I step outside and that wind blows my hair around!

M, you will look gorgeous with bangs or without, but I hope you can get the hairstyle you want!
I haven’t had bangs for almost 20 years, but I’ve always wanted to try the side swept bang thang. Maybe after the wedding.

I am so with you. I have had bangs literally my whole life. I fell in love with a style on youtube so I have been growing them out. I feel like a freak! So not me! I have them longer then needed now but don’t want to cut them to an awkward length. I will let them cut my bangs come wedding day for that sideswept bang look. I just hope it will be worth it. I have just avoided mirrors for the past two months. LOL I catch a glimpse of myself and think who is that?

I hate having bangs…. I wear contacts so when the hair grows (and my typically grows FAST) it gets in my eyes and, yeah, not fun!

BUT, when I pull my hair from my face, I have these “perpetual bangs” on the sides that look whimsy, wispy, and greek-goddess-ish and they don’t grow out (or if they do, I get more to replace ‘em… yay) but they stay out of my eyes so I don’t complain (in fact, I like ‘em!).

As for cutting my hair to get bangs? Nope, never gonna do that again!!! I love my long hair and I plan on keeping it long!

What can I say? My hair does its own thing and it’s a battle to get it to do what *I* want it to do!!!

I keep trying to grow my bangs out, but then get frustrated and cut them back. They are more side sweepy than fringe, but still get SO annoying when they are too long. I hear ya, girl!

I’m trying really hard not to trim mine so they will all go back for the wedding…good luck to you!

Natural curly hair = no bangs :( I do get some choppy layers to help frame my face, though. I love the pics you posted above, sometimes I would love to have them but the straightening/hair has a mind of it’s own wouldn’t work for me. I think bangs or no bangs, a bride always glows on her wedding day!

I will definitely be sporting bridal bangs! My FI has never known me without them, so I’ll prolly grow them out sometime… After the wedding :) I’m also thinking of cutting my hair short*er* for next summer, he’s only known me with hair that comes all the way down past my natural waist (maybe 2/3 of the way down my back)… So longggg hair and bangs for the big day :)

I think it’s win-win either way.

If you go with bangs, you’ll be true to yourself - the you that your man fell in love with and asked to marry in the first place.

If you don’t, you’ll be radiating a different kind of confidence - a newfound pride in your looks that will have you glowing all over.

Yeah, I can’t see it going wrong either way, really. Looking forward to seeing what you decide to go with!

I HAD to comment!!! I am a bangs person since shortly after high school. I cut them because of Ashlee Simpson, LOVED her. I grew them out once and HATED it, so I have my bangs again and love them so much. I am doing a long side braid (thanks to some extentions) and it looks AWESOME. :) If you love your bangs and it’s “you”, then I think you would regret it if you didn’t have them at your wedding…just saying…good luck! :)

I tried growing out my bangs for almost a year (several years before my engagement). I hated how my face looked without them when my hair was pulled back. Hair down, it was fine. Hair back, it was dreadful. I can’t stand to leave my hair down for more than a few hours (drives me nuts), so that decided it. I whacked them back into proper bang shape and have been happy ever since. I’m just not me without bangs.

I’m growing my hair out, bu keeping my bangs. I love the way they frame my face. I’ve grown my bangs out several times (you’re right, it’s awkward) but I always keep cutting them again, I just like the way it looks.
Like other posters said, I don’t know why you’d want to change something that’s so “you” - but there’s no harm in growing them out, you can always cut them again if you decide you miss them!

You’re going to look lovely whatever you decide to do with your bangs. :) My PWC involved getting fringe for the first time in over 20 years; I love it, but it definitely takes some getting used to!
